But i am more socialist and not impressed with this goverment.

I saw the Tgatcher era for a child's eyes. Didnt like the gulf war stuff but i do remember the huge optimism of New Labour...or all they just all crap!

All have good and bad i suppose. I was born in the 80s and have just had my first child. Whilst I certainly don't agree with Iraq and Afghanistan have to say new labour was probably the best I've seen. I remember friends getting child trust funds and money during pregnancy to help towards the costs of a new baby. Good Friday agreement, introduction of minimum wage and cheaper u oversight tuition too. Not keen on this get but then I suppose they have introduced 30 free hours childcare and raised the income tax threshold- it's s tough one

kalapattar · 28/02/2018 14:12

New Labour seemed the best time.

Lived through late 70s and Winter of Discontent
Falklands War
Miners strike
Massive privatisation of services and easy money.
Cone line and John Major
Early 90s had high interest rates. I remember black Wednesday. Or was it Friday?
Blair came in. Then we had September 11th and things just went down hill.

SallyCinnamon3009 · 28/02/2018 14:13

University tuition - feeding and typing is not a good combo

QuiteLikely5 · 28/02/2018 14:14

Tony Blair

NewYearNewMe18 · 28/02/2018 14:15

You have to factor in personal circumstances as well.

Never been so cash poor and hungry as I was under Blairs government. But then I had a young family.

Had a much better standard of living under Thatcher - but I didn't have a family to feed.

The legacy of Blair/Brown will be far reaching into my old age - pensions for one thing. Sold down the river. Destabilised the country as a whole with the whole Middle East situation, which will take generations to recover. Destroyed the face of the UK with their 'progressive' immigration policies. These are the things that impact people.

mothertruck3r · 28/02/2018 14:17

John Major.

Str4ngedaysindeed · 28/02/2018 14:22

I have to selfishly say 1991 - 98, encompassing Thatcher, major and Blair were easily the best for me. I was a single parent living in rented accommodation. I got income support paid weekly, full rent paid and free full time nursery for my dd when she was 3. I lived really quite well and could have continued until she was 12. I also had a cash in hand job which was much easier then. Awful really.

Str4ngedaysindeed · 28/02/2018 14:23

Not awful that I lived well, but that I could so easily 'fiddle, things

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 28/02/2018 14:24

Gosh, but I feel ancient.... I'd have to say Clem Attlee. His government created the NHS, introduced the Welfare State, built thousands of new homes to replace those destroyed during WW2 and dragged the country back from the brink of bankruptcy...
The present shower seem intent on reversing all of those things - and also seem to take a quite hideous delight in penalising and hurting the sick and disabled - they disgust me.

Amanduh · 28/02/2018 14:25

Blair. Until the end...

TeenTimesTwo · 28/02/2018 14:27

The coalition.

The Lib Dems moderated the Tory extremes and ensured some humanity.

The Tories pulled back the economy from the over spend years of Labour.

Pupil Premium came in under the coalition.

Johnnycomelately1 · 28/02/2018 14:27

Blair but that was when the global economy was going gangbusters so I’m not giving him all the credit.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 28/02/2018 14:30

Major. Affordable housing, began peace process, decent standard of living even for low waged.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 28/02/2018 14:30

Coalition was good too.

Surfingwhippet · 28/02/2018 14:31

Blair

totallyrasamus · 28/02/2018 14:34

Perhaps it would be helpful for people to state whether they would consider themselves working, middle class or upper middle?

I felt the Blair years were best for me.

MyDcAreMarvel · 28/02/2018 14:35

Blair by a country mile, the only government to genuinely want to raise children out of poverty by taking a long time view.
It's heartbreaking that the fruits of their labour ( sure starts etc) will never be reaped.
The Torys have systematically destroyed any good work they did.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 28/02/2018 14:36

SNP, things seem to be a lot better up here than down south.

theduchessstill · 28/02/2018 14:45

Blair and Brown. It felt like a positive time and there were many policies introduced clearly with the motivation of improving the lives of the less well off (min wage, increased funding to education, Sure Start etc). It wasn't perfect, but overall I felt good people were in charge, especially when Brown was PM. When the crash if 2008 happened it felt like someone quietly competent was in control, not like the embarrassing shower of shit we have flapping around now.

On a personal note I was better off during the coalition, partly due to low interest rates (not government decision I know), but also personal circumstances.

Amazes me there are still people spouting shit like Labour spent all the money.

PlanNumber · 28/02/2018 14:51

It depends on your personal circumstances. Many people of my acquaintance think Margaret Thatcher is some sort of god and indeed lots of people had never had it so good. Mining and industrial communities in the north, not so much.

Exactly this.

For me, personally, the John Major years worked best for me.

For everyone else, it has to be the Tony Blair years, no doubt!
