I was think that zzzzz. I think it would be completely possible to build a case for Blair and his cronies to be prosecuted as war criminals. But then Hitler was very popular as a leader among certain sections of his population at home.

FoofFighter · 28/02/2018 15:00

@mydcaremarvel

yes agree, the Labour govt of the 90s. I was a young single parent and felt very supported and encouraged. Opposing this to my experience as a single parent (again yes I know....) in the last 4 years, it's vastly different and nowhere near as supportive as it should be.

Willswife · 28/02/2018 15:03

Shocked how many are saying Blair. The damage done by his government will last a lifetime.

Whilst funding is better under a Labour government, unfortunately it is usually unaffordable and therefore unsustainable. If Jeremy Corbin is ever elected the overspending will start again. It's like getting a new credit card, life is great whilst you're spending but not as much fun when you have to pay it back.

Willswife · 28/02/2018 15:03

Corbyn

And your evidence for this is?

For me it is both the coalition and current government. I think it has just coincided with me being at the stage in my life where I was progressing in my career and personal life and things going as anticipated. I was not at that point yet under previous government but can't say whether I would have achieved similar things.

PlanNumber · 28/02/2018 15:11

What zzzz said.

More than a decade later the whole world is still paying for that. 1000s dead as a result.

If it's so clear and obvious, why do you suppose he has not been tried as a war criminal? What are your thoughts on the CR?

PlanNumber · 28/02/2018 15:29

Let me think, is it possible Mr Blair has friends in high places?

PlanNumber · 28/02/2018 15:30

If there was a proper prosecution establishment figures from most of the world would have to be called. No-one's up for that.

FloydOnThePull · 28/02/2018 15:31

Another vote for the Blair years. I'd just started graduate job in a finance related position for a massive intake of grads (London offices of a huge global firm) as the economy was flying. I'd come from a year working in a company that underwent a huge corporate merger and TB had visited at the time to address the staff, it felt like a world of endless possibilities. A few years later Lehman brothers happened, I narrowly avoided being made redundant and took loads of unpaid leave as an alternative. I've always felt at risk of redundancy since and that the opportunities for my career have narrowed considerably (whilst demands and expectations have increased beyond measure for the same or less reward). A lot of this is due to factors outside the control of our government but I don't think any government since has done enough to address stability and growth.

Grumpyoldblonde · 28/02/2018 15:34

The Blair years, it's hard to imagine now the optimism, the country felt young and fresh for a while.

It felt we were going forwards.

CorianderSnell · 28/02/2018 15:37

Interesting... I thought this was going to be about different countries and I was looking forward to finding out where to move to Grin

I quite liked the coalition, things didn’t seem too awful then.

OrderOnline · 28/02/2018 15:40

Blair. I wasn't happy about Iraq though. Thatcher was nearly as bad as the current shower of Tories.

SciFiFan2015 · 28/02/2018 15:46

The Scottish coalition government was good. A sense of balance and care for those who needed it.

DesdemonasHandkerchief · 28/02/2018 15:47

Another vote for the Lib/Con coalition for the reasons previously stated, I would have voted for them again if I could have done.
I was living abroad when Blair came to power and remember what an optimistic time that seemed to be for Britain, I'm pretty sure I would have voted for him had I lived here, however it also seemed like the optimism didn't last very long.
Its a cliche but it seems true that it doesn't matter who you vote for 'The Government' always gets in.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 28/02/2018 15:48

Tony Blair pre 9/11.

Butterfly1975 · 28/02/2018 15:52

I was ecstatic when Blair got in and remained so for the first year or so. Then saw first hand in the public sector the unbelievable amounts of money going into projects doomed to fail. It was the total opposite of these awful years of austerity. We need a middle ground and people at the top who actually listen to those doing the job.

LaurieMarlow · 28/02/2018 15:56

Blair without question. The upturn in people's circumstances and outlook was tangible.

gussyfinknottle · 28/02/2018 16:00

Blair.
Frankly, having lived abroad under totalitarian regimes, even shit UK ones are better.

Butterymuffin · 28/02/2018 16:04

Blair's New Labour government for the reasons @MyDCAreMarvel said, and for their proper funding of the NHS. And for not being ashamed to support immigration. We've really gone backwards since then.

PlanNumber · 28/02/2018 16:08

We have gone backwards in some respects Buttery, but that's been necessary because of the huge refugee crisis caused by the Blair government.

Believeitornot · 28/02/2018 16:13

Not sure how the economic crisis that was the credit crunch can be pinned on labour 🤨🤔

Furthermore the Tories have slashed public spending yet debt has gone up. How does that work then!

It’ll take billions to put right the damage the Tories have done. If the Tories had been sensible, they should have invested to grow the economy.

They didn’t.

Instead they give us brexit.
