Difficult one really. Overall I think there has been much incompetence by all the government's with many periods of boom and bust and also overspending and austerity. I guess with a system of changing governments every 5 years means policy manifestos are about winning votes rather than necessarily being what is good for us and also means long term planning is not really achievable. However that is democracy for you.

DrCoconut · 28/02/2018 16:16

The Thatcher government was very harsh for families like mine- widowed mum, low income, living in a northern industrial town. Personally the Blair/Brown years were when I felt most secure as an adult. As a newly (and unexpectedly and out of my control) lone parent, the current lot are scary.

Believeitornot · 28/02/2018 16:18

I should add, I was happiest under New labour being a child to a single mum under the tories.

The sad thing was, the new labour government had to spend to undo the under funding from before.

That’s the problem with boom and bust.

madeyemoodysmum · 28/02/2018 16:24

At the time I was very rich with Blair in office but in hindsight I wish he had not got in as spending money like water is fun at the time but it sure takes a Loooong time to pay back.

I had free govt money coming out of my ears.

Butterymuffin · 28/02/2018 16:25

PlanNumber We'll have to agree to disagree on "it's been necessary because of the huge refugee crisis caused by the Blair government." I don't agree it was necessary, nor that the Blair government caused the refugee crisis.

NoodlesLivesHere · 28/02/2018 16:30

The coalition was pretty good for me. When the results were announced I was really disappointed that I'd have to live under Tory rule again (because being a child in South Wales in the Thatcher years definitely wasn't pleasant).

However I found Cameron to be a pretty central version of a Tory and when he got too Conservative Clegg was there to provide an alternative voice.

I think the reason it worked well is because the Lib Dems are dreamers and the Conservatives are ruthless so to get anything done they had to meet in the middle.

It's been a rapid race to the bottom ever since Cameron lost his nerve and announced the referendum. At first I though May came across as fiercely intelligent and a woman of conviction but she's even worse than Gordon Brown was as leader. Corbyn doesn't offer a decent alternative so it's buckle down and hope for the best until we get someone charismatic, competent and conscientious as a party leader so that we can get on with making the country somewhere we can confidently live without fear of economic or social collapse.

SersioulycanitgetWORSE · 28/02/2018 16:34

Blair by a long long shot my life already difficult at that time was directly made 100 times worse as a direct result of his policies... And not just in one way but a number of ways. The obfuscation, denial and lies that came with his court will go down as turning point in British politics.

Over all in my life as and family thatcher waste pretty grim and so was socialism in 7.s

seagulltargetpractice · 28/02/2018 16:35

New Labour. 'But but but the Iraq war...'

But but but EMA. But but but SureStart centres. But but but affordable university education.

MongerTruffle · 28/02/2018 16:36

Coalition was good too.
Really?! That government is the reason for many of this country's problems.

PlanNumber · 28/02/2018 16:38

I don't believe that it's necessary either Buttery. However, politically, after we started to see the influx of refugees following the instability caused by the gulf war, no-one was going to get elected who didn't promise to be tough on restricting immigration.Which results in the same thing.

whippetwoman · 28/02/2018 16:42

Blair by a very long way. Extended maternity leave, paternity leave, minimum wage introduced, Sure Start, so many positives.

SersioulycanitgetWORSE · 28/02/2018 16:43

Grin I thought the op said the worst government Grin Blair by far is a the worst!

Poverty grew under Blair, they failed to make any in roads on child poverty! Only did brown save the thing at the end by chucking tax credits at every one!

Does no one remember the the head lines at the time!

gussyfinknottle · 28/02/2018 16:44

I'm very old - born in 60s with Wilson as PM. Always interested in politics - that kind of family.
Blair pre- Iraq invasion.

seagulltargetpractice · 28/02/2018 16:44

Let's not forget the Millennium Dome - the exhibition of the CENTURY!

What a legacy!

movingtowardsthelight · 28/02/2018 17:00

Thatcher.

Not everything she did impressed me but we had strong unwavering leadership. Sadly missing since.

CrispyAubergine · 28/02/2018 17:04

it wont be popular but New labour Blush

tax credits, maternity grants and child trust funds

bring back labour ffs

Youshallnotpass · 28/02/2018 17:04

Comparing Tony Blair to Adolf Hitler is fucking offensive and you should be ashamed of yourself.

Tony Blair made mistakes, I personally strongly dislike him.

Hitler was an abomination of a human being, I think people these days actually trivialise exactly what that man did. Jesus

PlanNumber · 28/02/2018 17:05

I was simply pointing out that foreign policy and domestic policy can be completely at odds.

Feodora · 28/02/2018 17:05

New Labour, but Iraq war was big mistake.

Youshallnotpass · 28/02/2018 17:09

On topic - I think The Coalition was a great government, the combination of the Conservatives but with the Liberal Democrats seemed to work quite well. Particularly in difficult times.

CrispyAubergine · 28/02/2018 17:11

Oh and in 2007 as a single parent, i went to uni to study nursing and got a bursary plus my child care paid. it was the equivalent of 20k tax free plus i got part housing benefit, council tax reduction plus working tax credits. then in 2009 i got evicted from my private rental and got a council house before my notice was even up

beguilingeyes · 28/02/2018 17:12

Probably Harold Wilson #oldperson

It was just a golden time, white heat of technology, The Beatles, full employment..all that good stuff.

Plus, he kept us out of Vietnam. If only Blair had had the balls to do that with Iraq.

RedRosie · 28/02/2018 17:13

For me (pretty old) I think it was the (first) Blair government.

All that hope for a fairer society.

Feodora · 28/02/2018 17:13

The coalition government chose austerity, it wasnt the only economic choice. Many economists say it is the wrong way to get an economy out of crash. The cuts austerity has imposed on so many public services, the poor and the sick and disabled have been brutal. Bloomin awful govt in my opinion as is the current one.

Toyboysrus · 28/02/2018 17:13

Am I the only one who thinks they are all much of a muchness? I was born in mid 1960s so have obviously lived under several different govts but I can't honestly say I've noticed any difference in my day to day life whoever has been in power.
