To think that Ellen Ripley from the 'Alien' films is just fucking fabulous?

So DH and I have spent the last few evenings watching all of the 'Alien' franchise on Film 4. I haven't seen the films in years and it struck me what a great character Ripley is.

She is not conventionally 'beautiful', there are no heaving breasts or arse hugging shorts, but Ripley is absolutely all woman and a total badass.

When she strips down to her vest and knickers at the beginning of the first film, it's actually integral to the plot, so that she could get into her spacesuit to decompress the cabin and kill the alien.

There isn't much 'romance' in the films, but the sexual tension that is there, she is very much in control of. Hicks is mesmerised by how well she can hold her own, and when she shags Charles Dance in the third film again its on her terms as much as his.

In fact all the female characters in the films are great. The sole survivor of the colony in Aliens is a little girl, there are several female secondary characters (Marines, pilots) who are not there as 'women' but just as 'another character' if you see what I mean. Short hair, not 'gender conforming', but absolutely women who hold their own as well as the men.

There are some Bechdel test moments too, with Ripley and Newt and Ripley and Winona Ryders character in Alien Resurrection.

Also in Alien Resurrection the theme of Ripley being a 'Mother' I noticed being shown as a powerful thing. Up until this point her being a woman was almost irrelevant (apart from in Aliens 3 when she is up against all the rapists) she is just a strong character.

I don't know, it feels like it was ahead of its time in terms of strong female characters. I am struggling to think of any films since which have similar - am thinking Katniss Everdeen, but even she is quite sexualised at points and there is the romance thing as a distraction.

Sorry that was long, and I may be over thinking, but I have loved watching these films over the past few evenings!

and Hudson (the late Bill Paxton) was in terminator.

beargrass · 28/02/2018 10:50

sumthucker - same! Esp if snot is involved and it looks like we've recreated the ending of the film Shock

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 28/02/2018 10:52

Pan - no I did not know that!

If I had had a daughter Ripley was a serious contender. But I didn’t

SciFiFan2015 · 28/02/2018 10:57

I love Ripley and Janeway too (there's the right way, there's the wrong way and there's the Janeway!)

I can't watch Aliens anymore. It scares me too much!

Might force myself though as it fits in with my feminist interests!

Birdsgottafly · 28/02/2018 11:04

"But she's a better role model than 'll these princesses and bimbos in the kids movies."

Can we big up a Women without putting other Women, who differ from her, down, for once?

BattleaxeGalactica · 28/02/2018 11:07

Am old so first saw Alien in the cinema at original release. Loved it then and love it now. The last twenty minutes of the first film are among the best hide and seeky tension filled minutes ever filmed and hold their own even now decades later.

Prometheus was such shit in comparison (WTF fondles a weird snaky looking alien beast and doesn't expect disaster? Hmm) and Covenant is even worse. I will keep watching though, just because Grin

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/02/2018 11:09

I'm in my thirties. We didn't even have the likes of frozen and brave back then.

It was very much sleeping beauty and Cinderella back then. Not really characters to look up to..

StoatofDisarray · 28/02/2018 11:15

Love Ripley, and loved Private Vasquez too (I've got a signed photo of her in my hallway - NERD!). So many good female characters in Aliens; it's fantastic.

PhilODox · 28/02/2018 11:17

Or Mulan? (Runs away from home to prevent her disabled father having to fulfill his duty, saves whole of China from the Huns)

Anyway, Ripley is pure awesomeness.
The alien films are all far too scary for me, however.
BattleaxeGalactica- your username is pure genius Grin

Love Kara Thrace too!

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/02/2018 11:20

I didn't see that til.god knows when. Probabky in my twenties cos I had a Disney nut friend Grin

I hated princess movies as I didn't see the point of worrying about a prince wanting to marry you or seeing them.trying to run in shoes and long dresses.

I either watched lassie movies (who doesn't like hero dogs) or sneakily tried to watch horrors.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 28/02/2018 11:27

I adore the alien films !
My party piece is knowing the whole script of Aliens, it is hard work watching it with me. Grin

StormyLovesOdd · 28/02/2018 11:28

Oooh me too, the first 2 Alien films are my favourites.

Why don't they make films like this anymore? I think the budget for any film now goes on the (overpaid) well known actors and the special effects rather than the writing.

LadyinCement · 28/02/2018 11:37

I have to agree with birdsgottafly.

I feel it’s slightly dubious admiring a woman (character) not solely, but partly, because she is physically strong and able to “kick ass” - like a man.

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/02/2018 11:46

It's not about being kick are though.

Just a woman who's sole purpose isn't hooking up with someone or finding a prince or just looking good.

She was smart without being clumsy and the joke of the group for they first two thirds of the movie

And she wasnt dumbed down for part of the entertainment.

This is why dd1 prefers movies such as full out, soul surfer etc which are abiut overcoming injuries or circumstances and still achieving their dreams.

deadringer · 28/02/2018 11:46

Ripley is awesome. I didn't realise the character was written as a man originally, does anyone know why they made her female. It was a stroke of genius, Weaver is amazing in the role, she is so brave and so strong emotionally.

PhilODox · 28/02/2018 11:53

You know she's acting, yes? Grin

AthenasOwl · 28/02/2018 11:56

Totally agree about ripley! Iv been a huge fan since I saw the first movie.
Saw the most recent film alien covenant and was unimpressed with the female characters. None of them were very strong, a lot of screaming and crying going on ..ripley would have just got stuck in and kicked ass!

DenPerry · 28/02/2018 12:19

She is brilliant. Strong, confident, intelligent, witty, caring and oozes sexuality. She makes me feel good when I watch her.

Thisusernamethingistricky · 28/02/2018 12:28

Yes, this on its own is pretty huge.

Am thinking about Lara Croft. Yes, she was kick ass and fought bad guys, but her main selling point was the tits and ass wasn't it?

I want to watch them all again now after this thread!

Philodox I thought it was a documentary? Smile

Of course.

Pretty sure that outfit would be the last thing you'd wear....

If they remade alien now it would probably involve scenes of someone giving ripley a makeover and everyone realising how beautiful she was then chasing aliens in hot pants and heels Hmm

Waves at all my people!
Admits to you that I built all the spaceships from those wee footery kits when I was a teen
Yes- James Cameron uses the same actors over and over again; hence “Hudson” being in Titanic, “Bishop” in Terminator also.... I’m pretty sure Vasquez is a steerage passenger in Titanic too.

Prometheus- utter pants.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 28/02/2018 13:13

Hudson is in terminator as well.
