To think that Ellen Ripley from the 'Alien' films is just fucking fabulous?

So DH and I have spent the last few evenings watching all of the 'Alien' franchise on Film 4. I haven't seen the films in years and it struck me what a great character Ripley is.

She is not conventionally 'beautiful', there are no heaving breasts or arse hugging shorts, but Ripley is absolutely all woman and a total badass.

When she strips down to her vest and knickers at the beginning of the first film, it's actually integral to the plot, so that she could get into her spacesuit to decompress the cabin and kill the alien.

There isn't much 'romance' in the films, but the sexual tension that is there, she is very much in control of. Hicks is mesmerised by how well she can hold her own, and when she shags Charles Dance in the third film again its on her terms as much as his.

In fact all the female characters in the films are great. The sole survivor of the colony in Aliens is a little girl, there are several female secondary characters (Marines, pilots) who are not there as 'women' but just as 'another character' if you see what I mean. Short hair, not 'gender conforming', but absolutely women who hold their own as well as the men.

There are some Bechdel test moments too, with Ripley and Newt and Ripley and Winona Ryders character in Alien Resurrection.

Also in Alien Resurrection the theme of Ripley being a 'Mother' I noticed being shown as a powerful thing. Up until this point her being a woman was almost irrelevant (apart from in Aliens 3 when she is up against all the rapists) she is just a strong character.

I don't know, it feels like it was ahead of its time in terms of strong female characters. I am struggling to think of any films since which have similar - am thinking Katniss Everdeen, but even she is quite sexualised at points and there is the romance thing as a distraction.

Sorry that was long, and I may be over thinking, but I have loved watching these films over the past few evenings!

I loved Hicks. I didn't like the extended version where he reveals that his name was Dwayne. This was ALL WRONG.

Yup. Way to kill the fanny gallops stone dead.

I had a major teen crush on Michael Biehn after Terminator & Aliens, but he was typecast as a meatheaded soldier in just about everything else he did. 🙄 His porno ‘tache and psychotic break in The Abyss was a bit of a passion killer too.

Namechangetempissue · 27/02/2018 22:47

Also love Hicks and Vasquez. The first two films are superb.
Game over man is constantly used in this house!

Game over man is constantly used in this house!

We use lots of Aliens quotes in this house. Had to bin “assholes and elbows! Let’s move ‘em out!” (rallying house-leaving cry) post kids, more’s the pity.

Namechangetempissue · 27/02/2018 22:53

I frequently tell my old lurcher (who is a bit of a menace) to "get away from her you bitch" in the Ripley accent and tone as she bullies my younger dog a bit Grin

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 27/02/2018 22:55

"It's a bug hunt" - my standard response to any unpleasant chore.

"Another glorious day in the corps" occasionally rolled out sarcastically at work.

“I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure”

chickychickyparmparm · 27/02/2018 22:57

Actually genuinely considered calling DD Ripley. Love these films.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 27/02/2018 23:04

I fucking love aliens. The scene where Ripley has rescued newt and is running with her and they run into the nest. Ripley slowly turns round and puts Newt down and you see the little flame on the gun... No music just the sound of the queen... phenomenal!

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 27/02/2018 23:19

Ripley is one of my screen heroes, alongside Mortician Addams, Sally Solomon, Mary Poppins and General Leia
And Ripley was right, godsdamnit! They should never have let the away party back on to the Nostromo once they’d been in contact with the alien beings...
I’ve been watching Alien since I was far younger than I should have been, and she’s a fucking ace role model.
I saw Alien at the cinema last year and it was a revelation! Seeing it on the big screen with an enraptured audience, the contrast between quiet and noise, the tension...it’s a brilliant film, one of the best I’ve seen

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 27/02/2018 23:20

Incidentally, Alien was the first film my dad took my Mam to see on one of their first dates...they’re still married 40 years later Grin

Heartofglass12345 · 28/02/2018 09:38

No, my husband loves her. He's always going on about how good Alien is lol

QueenOfAccidentalDeathStares · 28/02/2018 09:40

I wanted to call my ginger cat Jones.......... I wasn't allowed Sad

Thisusernamethingistricky · 28/02/2018 09:42

Yup. Way to kill the fanny gallops stone dead.

Lol ^^ this! 😂

So glad others are feeling the Alien love. I remember watching it way too young as well round my older cousins house! I'm so glad they showed them all on Film 4 as now I am older and more cynical, I can appreciate how brilliant the films are from a feminist perspective.

Stopped watching Prometheus half way through last night though, it's a bit rubbish isn't it?

Yanbu Ripley rocked.

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 28/02/2018 09:51

Totally agree with the Ripley love.

She is second only to my favourite character of all time - Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs for me has to come first.

Ripley is a very close second.

I8toys · 28/02/2018 09:52

Alien is one of my favourite films and I think its in part due to Ripley and the fact that she is a kick ass heroine. Considering it was made in 1979 it still looks amazing and gives me the chills!!

beargrass · 28/02/2018 09:54

I did not like Prometheus either.

One of the best exchanges in Aliens:

^You ever been mistaken for a man, Vasquez?
No. Have you?^

Grin
BelovedMutant · 28/02/2018 10:01

Ha, my people!

The Alien films are my all time favourites, never get fed up of watching them, same with the Terminators.

Also glad someone mentioned Capt. Janeway, she is a LEGEND, I am currently watching Voyager AGAIN for the 4th time, it never gets old, the writing, acting and stories are just amazing! and I love The DoctorGrin

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 28/02/2018 10:06

I so wanted to like that film, but I just can’t. It has stunning production values but the script has so many holes in it and some of the characters are too stupid to care about.

Pretty much the same for Alien Covenant

Thisusernamethingistricky · 28/02/2018 10:12

^You ever been mistaken for a man, Vasquez?
No.^ Have you?

Awesome!

Gender non conforming women who were still very much women. Vasquez is a great character actually.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 28/02/2018 10:15

Alien is my favourite film ever. I love Aliens, but it’s the creeping horror that I love the most.

Ripley is totally badass I love her.

Did you know Vasquez plays the foster mum in Terminator 2?

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 28/02/2018 10:17

I think so long as you watch Prometheus and Alien Covenant as Alien ‘type’ films rather than something added to the franchise, and you overlook the many many many inconsistencies Grin then you can enjoy them.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 28/02/2018 10:20

Did you know Vasquez plays the foster mum in Terminator 2?

Did you know she owns the business ‘Jenette Bras’ a large cup bra specialist with the slogan ‘The alphabet starts at D’?

SumThucker · 28/02/2018 10:36

I love Ripley too, I always used to call my daughter Newt when her hair got knotty.

I didn't know Vasquez played the foster mum, can see it now though.

Thisusernamethingistricky · 28/02/2018 10:41

Did you know Vasquez plays the foster mum in Terminator 2?

No, I didn't! Googling.....

James Cameron directed Aliens and the Terminator films didn't he?
