This made me groan and in the less than 24 hours since it was written, there are rumours that Hope Hicks might be writing a memoir.

Tressie Mc
@tressiemcphd
There will be a Hope Hicks "deep dive" profile in a serious weekly or monthly. A few op eds in the mainstream dailies. Responses in the boutique digitals. A glow up piece in a glossy women's mag asking who the real feminists are. And then her engagement pics in Town & Country
By the time you kill your next plant Hope will be co-hosting The View Chat Talk Whatever and being rumored as a replacement for Meghan Kelly.

But! Even news of a book is not without potential jeopardy for Hicks

Whoa!: “Hicks has been secretly keeping...a 'diary of her White House work, and her interactions w/Trump.'” If true, belongs to USG not her, must be preserved in WH under Pres Recds Act, raises issues about her handling of classified & WILL be subpoenaed.

[he quotes a dailymail link but I've subbed it for a business insider one instead. Feel free to seek the dm one if you wish!

This is significant. Nobody has been more supportive of Jared than Rupert. And this wouldn’t have been published without his knowledge.

Am I dreaming? Tucker Carlson just said that if Obama made the same comments that Trump did about taking people's guns without "due process" he "would've been denounced as a dictator. We would've denounced him first. Congress would've been talking about impeachment right now."

Jack Dorsey admits Twitter has got it wrong, big time.

Twitter Is Rethinking Everything. At Last.
slate.com/technology/2018/03/twitter-is-rethinking-everything-at-last.html

Twitter “didn’t fully predict or understand the real-world negative consequences” of its service, Dorsey said in a 13-part tweetstorm. “We have witnessed abuse, harassment, troll armies, manipulation through bots and human-coordination, misinformation campaigns, and increasingly divisive echo chambers. We aren’t proud of how people have taken advantage of our service, or our inability to address it fast enough.”

And Twitter execs will be talking to a Senator on Monday.

Twitter to explain on Capitol Hill how their platform was used in Herald, fake tweet hoaxes
www.mcclatchydc.com/news/nation-world/national/article202976064.html

Officials from Twitter Inc. are going to Capitol Hill to explain how impostors could carry off a hoax to undermine the credibility of The Miami Herald and post fake tweets aimed at inflaming the public after the mass shooting at a Parkland high school.

The Twitter officials were summoned by the office of Sen. Bill Nelson, the Florida Democrat who is the ranking member on the Senate Commerce Committee.

Exclusive: Secret Documents From Russia’s Election Trolls Leak
www.thedailybeast.com/exclusive-secret-documents-from-russias-election-trolls-leak

While the date of the auction could not be independently confirmed, the authenticity of the leak can. The leaked documents list screen names connected to a number of American citizens who were used as unwitting proxies by the Russians. The Daily Beast was able to track down four of those citizens, whose names have not been previously revealed. The leak contains precise dates in 2016 in which the IRA-created account Blacktivist reached out to those U.S. citizens, plus a short description of the conversations. The Daily Beast spoke to those citizens, and confirmed they interacted with the Blacktivist account in the ways described by the IRA in the document. In one case, the American even provided screenshots of his interactions with the Russian troll trying to dupe him.
[...]
While the troll farm’s use of YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook is now well-known, the leak shows that the Internet Research Agency also operated on Reddit and had a substantial footprint on Tumblr. They documented and tracked their personalized interactions with specific, unsuspecting Americans, some of whom are named in the leaks.

Those outreach efforts display conceptual sophistication. The leaks show that IRA imposter accounts targeted activists for specific causes the Russians wanted promoted. On the target list: the daughter of one of Martin Luther King’s lieutenants.

It's astonishing! I hope that social media companies do start to take their civic responsibilities seriously, above profit, but as with most other things it'll require a strong government or change demanded by people before that'll come to pass.

And with Brad Parscale being appointed as campaign manager by Trump (and obviously all of Trump's actions to date), it just doesn't seem likely to happen in the US or the UK. The conservatives have bought a beefed up social media presence for themselves, which seems to make a mockery of the whole thing. (Sorry, can't remember if it's been posted on here before but here it is again in case it hasn't been)

JARED KUSHNER’S REAL-ESTATE FIRM SOUGHT MONEY DIRECTLY FROM QATAR GOVERNMENT WEEKS BEFORE BLOCKADE

theintercept.com/2018/03/02/jared-kushner-real-estate-qatar-blockade/

And excerpt

THE REAL ESTATE firm tied to the family of presidential son-in-law and top White House adviser Jared Kushner made a direct pitch to Qatar’s minister of finance in April 2017 in an attempt to secure investment in a critically distressed asset in the company’s portfolio, according to two sources. At the previously unreported meeting, Jared Kushner’s father Charles, who runs Kushner Companies, and Qatari Finance Minister Ali Sharif Al Emadi discussed financing for the Kushners’ signature 666 Fifth Avenue property in New York City.

The 30-minute meeting, according to two sources in the financial industry who asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the potential transaction, included aides to both parties, and was held at a suite at the St. Regis Hotel in New York.

A follow-up meeting was held the next day in a glass-walled conference room at the Kushner property itself, though Al Emadi did not attend the second gathering in person.

The failure to broker the deal would be followed only a month later by a Middle Eastern diplomatic row in which Jared Kushner provided critical support to Qatar’s neighbors. Led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, a group of Middle Eastern countries, with Kushner’s backing, led a diplomatic assault that culminated in a blockade of Qatar. Kushner, according to reports at the time, subsequently undermined efforts by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to bring an end to the standoff.

The Gulf crisis involving Qatar and its neighbors will likely be Kushner’s defining foreign policy legacy. The crisis followed a May visit to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, by Kushner and President Donald Trump, who subsequently took credit for Saudi Arabia and its allies’ efforts against Qatar. The fallout has reshaped geopolitical alliances in the region, splitting the Gulf Cooperation Council and pushing Qatar, home to the Middle East’s largest U.S. military base, closer to Turkey and Iran.

Mohammed Hitme, chief of staff to the Qatari finance minister, did not respond to emails or phone calls seeking comment. White House Spokesperson Hope Hicks referred questions to Kushner Companies, whose spokesperson Christine Taylor said, “We don’t comment on who Charlie meets with.” She added, “We don’t do business with any sovereign funds.”

I saw lots of angry tweets about that article saying that they've framed her as a victim of Trump's poor impulses, rather than being an active participant in his schemes. It does feel as though Hope Hicks is getting a much easier time than others. Her white washing appears to have already begun

AcrossthePond55 · 02/03/2018 14:06

I think Javanka's dubious business dealings are a lesson in 'with success comes arrogance'. They aren't stupid people, they just have massive egos to match their greed. They have had successful (dubious) business dealings in the past (with or without their parents' help). I just think they are so arrogant about their past 'successes' that they felt 'bombproof'. Scrotus' 'win' would have put the icing on the cake of their 'we can't be touched' beliefs. Plus I think they had no idea of the scrutiny their doings would be under with a parent (-in law) in the WH.

Nefarious business dealings are par for the course in the world of big business. Nobody really bats an eye at it. But when you are a 'member of the Government' even in an unpaid capacity your every move is, and should be, scrutinized.

President Trump's steep tariff hikes on imported aluminum will impact the beer industry dramatically. A sharp increase in production costs will be passed along to consumers. The average 6-pack of beer is $7.49. The price is expected to increase to $8.60 within 45 days.

Finally, something that will piss off his base!

  1. Wow, Trump confidant Carl Icahn is such a LUCKY GUY.

Right before Trump announces a steel tariff that tanks manufacturing stocks, he dumped 1 MILLION SHARES of the one of the companies that was hardest hit.

Such a fortunate coincidence.

  1. Icahn recently sold almost 1 million shares Manitowoc, a company that makes cranes out of steel. He was forced to disclose the transaction to the SEC on Feb 22.

It was one of the hardest hit by Trump's announcement. It's down 12% since yesterday!

[Don't forget this from the summer:

Carl Icahn resigned from Trump advisor role ahead of article alleging conflict of interest
Billionaire investor Carl Icahn left his role as a special advisor to President Donald Trump on Friday
That came ahead of the release of a critical magazine article detailing Icahn's potential conflicts of interest and questioning whether he had acted illegally
In December, CNBC reported on the potential conflicts Icahn faced because of his stake in refiner CVR Energy
