To expect some help from my GP in losing weight?

I am a fatty. Properly overweight. About 8 stone over normal weight range (about 19st, I should be 11st at most according to BMI).

Last year I had some health issues. My GP said I'd benefit from losing weight. Just eat less and move more were her words.

I have tried. However I struggle to control what I eat, and have zero willpower.

I did go to a well known slimming group previously. It made me ill, though I did get down to 13st. But it wasn't sustainable.

I asked my GP for help. I was told 'all they could do was refer me to the nurse, but she would tell me the same. That was all they could do and there was no other help available.

I have heard of people locally being referred to a dietician, or sent to slimming group for free etc. Aibu to expect something similar, or certainly some kind of help beyond trite advice?

@Chubbychubchub You've got an excuse for everything, haven't you!

Why should the NHS waste resources on someone that can't be bothered to make any effort themselves?

You can't download MFP on your phone? Write what you eat in a notebook.

Can't run due to injury? Walk instead.

Feel too heavy to exercise? Work out at home doing low impact exercises. Start slowly, increasing in duration as you get stronger.

Slimming group made you ill and wasn't sustainable? More excuses. A free NHS referral won't help.

It doesn't matter how many referrals you get, the advice will still be the same - eat less, move more!

There are so many people that need help from the NHS, for actual medical problems, not for laziness, greed and a 'can't be arsed' attitude like you.

Yabu 'to expect some help from GP in losing weight' yes.

You don't need help losing weight as you have written here that you have done it before and got down to 13st. You CAN do it again.

It's definitely mind over matter, getting referred for free slimming world classes won't make the weight fall off, it'll only take funds from nhs services unnecessarily.

It's down to you to show yourself what you can do. My fitness pal is a great app. Just start by logging everything that you eat, you'll be amazed how much it adds up.

Exercise will come when you start dropping and feeling better.

Slimming world isn’t sustainable - check out rebelfit
It doesn’t change habits or portion control so once you get to target you put it all back on again iminless you follow the plan for life.
They are yet to find someone who has lost weight with SW and kept it off five years later, unless they swapped SW for nutrition and fitness.
Calorie counting, eat less move more, is the only way to keep it off for good unfortunately! And educate yourself about nutrition.
I don’t mean to be harsh but your last post seems like you are making a lot of excuses - you need a mindset overhaul.

You can’t expect to eat food you like and lose weight when that food is the reason you’ve got to 19st? I’m sorry, it’s all excuses. You’re not ready to lose weight and that’s absolutely fine but don’t spout no one is helping you because there is plenty of help out there. I’m only saying this because both myself and my Mum were like that and the minute we took control and accepted it was only ourselves who could make the change we both lost weight.

May be I should just be a sheep and say yes to everything every poster says even if it's stuff I actually can't do like swim or eat high fat foods.

Being overweight is about eating more calories than you use. It does not take lots more calories every day to achieve this. So eating an extra 200 calories a day will make you put on 2 1b a month. Most fat people get fat gradually. An extra 200 calories a day more than you need is very easy to do. 1 slice of buttered toast will do it.

Oh make your minds up. I do want to change....then because I don't agree to go to SW or low carb I don't want to.

I asked my GP for help. I don't care what that help was. If it was free membership to sw, I would have said np thanks and explained why I didn't think it helped me. But no doubt I'd be wrong for that too.

Sorry OP I have limited sympathy.

The NHS is not here for lifestyle coaching.

They have limited resources.
People with physical and mental health problems struggle to get appointments- and I am guessing you don't have these.

You need to accept responsibility for your own life.

And eating too much, like smoking, has a massive psychological component. Those saying simply eat less are frankly a bit thick.

I am fat as well and eat very healthily, I love healthy foods, but I eat more calories than I use.

Start to increase your movement and reduce your calorie intake slowly.

No point trying to dive in at 100%, you will just fail.

Decide that this week you are going to exercise once. Find something you can do, like walking. Make time for this, if not in the week, at the weekend.

Get a phone you can download mfp to.

Start by keeping a diary of EVERYTHING you eat. If you can't use mfp then do it manually. See how many calories you are eating in a normal week and start by cutting down .... not a drastic cut, not enough to make you hungry every day.

You need to have a deficit to lose weight, but slow weight loss is more likely to stay off long term.

We all want a quick fix, but that way madness and disappointment lie!

Good luck OP. Baby steps and changes to your habits are needed.

If you can’t manage to follow something as simple as SW or WW there is genuinely NOTHING your GP can do. Those lifestyle changes are the most simple calorie deficits you can do. Eat less, move more. Seriously - why is that hard?

Write a list of all the reasons you want to loose weight and every time your tempted read it first.

The only person who can change you is you, and that’s when you stop making excuses no one is too busy to exercise a little bit and make some healthy food swaps.

Your weight is out of your control.

The diets have the wrong foods. You're scared of swimming. You only have ten minutes a day to walk (even around your own living room?). And we're all bitches for getting frustrated with you.

This is like AA. You have to want to change. But at the moment you're transferring your unhappiness to anyone and everyone except you. And that's no skin off our noses, this is your life and you need to man up if you really want to get this done.

(And I say this as someone who has struggled with weight for 20 years.)

YABVU. Your problem is a lack of self control and willpower, and no referral will give you that.

Pp are right; you have an excuse for everything, and when you are presented with solutions for those excuses, you just provide more excuses.

You are attempting to shift the responsibility for you losing weight onto someone else, when you are the only person who can actually do something about it; you just don’t want to put the work in.

May I suggest a fitbit charge, keeps record of your food and exercise, follow a plan of eating food that you like within the calories they suggest. You can set it up with your weight goals, join activity groups and log your food daily. If you can be disciplined it many just help, just find the activity that you enjoy, even just walking to begin with.

It seems to be a common sense approach.
I found joining an online community helpful when I was losing weight, even if it's just a long running thread on a forum. It's really helpful just to exchange ideas and support each other.
As for specific diet plans, it's finding one that suits you. What I have personally found helpful is eating quite plain and simple food, similar to what I grew up on, and that really removes the temptation to stuff myself. Also second swimming as exercise, it's made a masive difference to my body. I started exercising with just walking and using the wii fit board, which helped me get more confident about exercising.

don't you have a day off each week?

i was out running on sunday and a huge lady passed me.....a really large lady actually. but i caught her eye and smiled at her and thought bloody well done! anyone can do that....and i know she was challenged by just bending down lacing up her trainers, but she was out there

I think you need to be in the right head space to tackle the problem of will power.
There is hypnotherapy available which is like a Virtual Gastric Band but requires a number of sessions and would be expensive.
There are also Apps which you can download which are similar - might be worth trying this so that psychologically you're in a better place to try to lose weight.
Hope you find something that works for you.

To whoever asked what I eat in a day .

In a typical day I would have something like
Toast x 2 if I'm at home. A peanut butter sandwich if I'm out.

Lunch I eat things like a supermarket meal deal (sandwich crisps and drink) or a salad from subway or a salad from home.

Dinner I make pasta, shepherds pie, lasagne, sausage casserole, curry etc. I have a large portion of that. Maybe bread too, either before that or with dinner.

Snacks in the eve a bowl of cereal or biscuits or whatever other snacks are in the house.

Some days I eat more and some less but obviously I eat far too much. I know that. No one needs to fat shame me and tell me how bad that is or how revolting I am. I can do all that to myself.

Write your calories in a notebook? Then you can eat whatever you want but just taking care not to eat too much! It's foolproof.
