To expect some help from my GP in losing weight?

Chubbychubchub · 27/02/2018 13:23

I am a fatty. Properly overweight. About 8 stone over normal weight range (about 19st, I should be 11st at most according to BMI).

Last year I had some health issues. My GP said I'd benefit from losing weight. Just eat less and move more were her words.

I have tried. However I struggle to control what I eat, and have zero willpower.

I did go to a well known slimming group previously. It made me ill, though I did get down to 13st. But it wasn't sustainable.

I asked my GP for help. I was told 'all they could do was refer me to the nurse, but she would tell me the same. That was all they could do and there was no other help available.

I have heard of people locally being referred to a dietician, or sent to slimming group for free etc. Aibu to expect something similar, or certainly some kind of help beyond trite advice?

Chubby Low carb DOES work for you. That's how I lost my weight and I don't have a gallbladder either. It doesn't affect it at all.

Stop making excuses, you're not helping yourself here.

tshirtsuntan · 27/02/2018 17:00

I have recently (within the last month) been referred by my gp for 16 weeks free gym membership, 4 personal training sessions and 16 weeks free membership of weight watchers. After this period the gym membership is £13 monthly rather than the £47 if you just went straight through the gym. I am overweight but have no health problems because of it (yet!) It must depend where you live.

Chubbychubchub · 27/02/2018 17:00

No talkin I'm on my phone. I have a phone. It doesn't support apps but i can access websites. Posts like your last make you look like a dick. Fine if that's your aim.

I didn't find the 15 miles hard. I bloody loved it. It's actually reminded me how much I enjoyed it. Not in prospect but during and after. I need to get that back. I was a size 12/14 at that weight. I would like to be there again.

Thanks to those posters with more helpful suggestions. When I have more time later I will go through the thread more carefully and note the ones I think are workable And how I can do them.

I don't have sugar in tea btw. My main drink is diet coke. Yes I know it's crap. When I ran I did drink water - I'd never really drunk it before then if I could avoid it. I would still only drink it while exercising. Any other time I find it vile but clearly that's my issue.

Being thin is hard work. Are you willing to work hard?

Also, have you looked into hypnotherapy? It can often take the form of one session and then you listen to that session recording over and over

Allthecoolkids · 27/02/2018 17:02

OP here’s what I suggest. Here is my free, tailored, 3 point plan for you. Do this every day for the next fortnight and you’ll lose. I promise.

  1. Log onto MFP every night on your desktop computer once the kids are in bed and log your intake for that day. Log EVERYTHING. Every night.
  1. Stop eating bread with dinner, and reduce your dinner portion size by 20%.
  1. Do something different in the evenings that stops you snacking after dinner. Exercise or another hobby, I’ve taken up sketching.

Just do that religiously for two weeks. Then review.

YellowMakesMeSmile · 27/02/2018 17:02

The GP cannot magically give you willpower.

You have children, that should be all the will power you need. Do you want them to have food issues, copy unhealthy habits etc or god forbid they lose a parent early due to these issues.

Allthecoolkids · 27/02/2018 17:04

ps you can access MFP as a website on your phone and log stuff through there, you don’t have to have the app.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/02/2018 17:04

@Chubbychubchub then you can get on the MyFitnessPal site on your phone. That was a bit disingenuous to say you can't access MFP on your phone wasn't it? Hmm

Why are you being so rude to people?

expatinscotland · 27/02/2018 17:04

I'm telling you, look at The Body Coach's workouts on YouTube, they are short and he has plenty for beginners and low impact ones. I've moved on to the more advanced ones but I modify some of the moves because I have pins in one of my knees. They are all free and can be done with no equipment.

Chubbychubchub · 27/02/2018 17:04

Bit, I have thanked people. See last post which crossed with yours. I can't go back and find the one you mentioned but I will later when I am on the pc. And others that have been referred to. I am trying to correct wrong assumptions. I'm sorry if that has meant posters who were trying to help felt ignored.

OP posts:
Chubbychubchub · 27/02/2018 17:06

I can get onto a website. I was told to get the app which I can't do.

I think having been on the receiving end of some of the stuff on this thread being a little defensive can't be surprising.

OP posts:
k2p2k2tog · 27/02/2018 17:07

I'd love there to be a magic solution to losing weight, believe me. But there's not. The advice to eat less and move more is the best out there. My Fitness Pal on your phone is a great aid, you can get it through their website too.

Downtheroadfirstonleft · 27/02/2018 17:07

Op, everything you post is negative, what you can't do, what doesn't work.

Write down 3 things that you COULD do today, to help a little bit and then keep growing the list.

One day at a time. No one can do this for you sadly. You CAN stop eating too much/ the wrong things, but you have to WANT to and decide to stop prevaricating and actually DO IT.

Good luck!

Bluntness100 · 27/02/2018 17:08

Op. Why did your gp tell you you would benefit from losing weight when you are so fit and very healthy at 19 stone? It can't be aesthetics, which is all that's left.

KochabRising · 27/02/2018 17:11

Most overweight people do have ok biochemistry in their thirties. If you look ten and fifteen years later you see a very different picture.

I’m overweight myself at the moment, and pregnant and vomming constantly so not the best time to diet, but I’m aware that after kiddovis born I’m going to have to have an overhaul of what I eat.

Dont stress about the excercise just now - that amount wouldn’t do much. Walk briskly when you can. Diet is what drives weight loss.

You can make small adjustments- cut out the crisps, the bread and the cereal at night along and you’ll save a lot of calories. Day 250 kcal for crisps, 250 for two slices of bread and 300 for a bowl of cereal? That’s 800 a day right there. That’s a pound and a bit a week just from that.
Drink more water. Just little changes, one at a time. Sustainable changes. Once one is habit, do another. So this week, cut out the cereal. You’ll be hungry for a bit but you will adapt. Being hungry isn’t going to harm you, that’s important to accept.

A point about wanting external help - I do understand that and I think something like a cognitive therapy could be useful. But... seeking an external force to sort this for you takes your own control away, and stops you being accountable. If you accept that a GP referral isn’t going to do it for you then you put what’s called the locus of control back within you.

You CAN do this. There are excellent suggestions in this thread. But it has to come from you.

NormaNameChange · 27/02/2018 17:12

Get a fitbit... look at how little/much you move

Log everything on My Fitness Pal - drinks included. Tea, coke everything and don't cheat. You will only be cheating yourself.

Take a photo - bra and pants. Then put that underwear in a Ziploc bag and go for a walk.

Swim

Take the stairs

Move.

Move more.

The ONLY way you will lose weight is to create a calorie deficit and use more calories than you are consuming. I've lost 4 stone. These last 1.5 are THE hardest to shift ever but it will go and I will be damned if I give up now; its hard work. Eating under 1200 calories a day is not easy but it can be done, it really can.

Good Luck Flowers

No talkin I'm on my phone. I have a phone. It doesn't support apps but i can access websites. Posts like your last make you look like a dick. Fine if that's your aim.

OP I think you need to re read what TalkinPeace was saying. They were saying you DON’T NEED THE MFP APP-YOU CAN LOG IN THROUGH THEIR WEBSITE.

Really no need to call TalkInPeace a dick. In fact, they only poster calling others names is you, despite your instance you are receiving abuse.

I’m out.

ShapelyBingoWing · 27/02/2018 17:19

OP, I'd seriously consider revisiting Slimming World. You've had a 6st loss on it previously, which isn't to be sniffed at.

Looking at your current diet, it's very easy to adapt your evening meals to be SW friendly. It also gives you some rough mechanisms for portion control and is inherently low fat. Most importantly, it will severely restrict your current very high intake of crap carbs, which is going to be essential for both weight loss and maintenance once the weight is gone. Those supermarket meal deal sandwiches are often quite a bit higher in fat that you'd imagine - you'd be hard pressed to find one with neither butter nor mayo. Slimming World will help you identify these kind of empty calories and replace them with something more nutritious and filling. It will also give you weekly support and informal therapy. The food choices are huge so there's no need to force down foods you don't like.

I know you've said you don't want to do SW again. But I've read all of your posts and IMO, it actually fits in with what you need.

Chubbychubchub · 27/02/2018 17:20

Oh bluntness dfod. I'm not responding to you further.

Down yes there are 3 things can do and can share. Re read this thread and make a note of the helpful advice. Investigate the provision for counselling in my area and what it might cost if there is none. I have only had 2 slices of toast and a slice of vegan pizza (not my choice, working lunch) to eat today. So i will try to go the rest pf the day without snacks and also try serving my dinner on a smaller plate. Sp that's 4 things.

DownstairsMixUp · 27/02/2018 17:21

There's no way a doctor would mention If you had a massive layer of fat round your heart anyway, why would they? They wanted to see if it was a problem with your heart, fat around it will maybe cause problems in the long run and you have to lose weight to do that.

You are in denial and people have been helpful. Your diet isn't as low in fat as you think either. start tracking and you'll be shocked at how high the fat content comes out in your macros

madein1995 · 27/02/2018 17:23

I know how hard it is losing weight. I weigh two stone 10lb less than last year but I'm still obese and losing. You don't need to run (I bloody hate running). Have you got time to join a gym, the council ones are cheap and I find the classes really fun so I love going. Things like boxercise, aqua aerobics, are enjoyable, same as zumba. In regards to slimming world there is no one way of eating - some people eat mug shots and Muller lights, others don't. Its basically low fat, plenty of fruit, veg and protein, some carbs, some dairy and bread, a small amount of 'treats' to stop feeling deprived.

I'll give yesterday and the day before as an example.
Sunday -
Overnight oats using oats and fruit and plain 0% fat yogurt
Ham salad with plenty of veg and some feta. A satsuma.
Sausage casserole, roasties done in fry light, broccoli, carrots and a small Yorkshire pudding
Twix finger

Monday
Overnight oats again
Pasta bake (made previously, made easily, froze), cheese on top. Satsuma and some grapes
Chicken curry and rice - lots of veg in the sauce.
Halo top ice cream and strawberries

I don't like 'cooked dinner' veg very much. I do like Peppers, mushrooms etc. So I make meals that I can put those in. I do understand how frustrating it can be, losing weight. I see the slim people at the gym and feel a bit envious. The nhs is so underfunded at the moment though, and I think that realistically the best way to change is Make it yourself. It is all common sense - eat good food, cook more (no need to be complicated recipes), eat less processed stuff, put plenty of veg on the plate before dishing up the rest, find some exercise you enjoy. I couldn't do running due to my knees but I enjoy other things. One good thing I've found is eating your dinner later at night - say 8pm - makes me full and avoids snacking

You, like me, need to do something for your health because being overweight affects your health. I'm 23 and relatively healthy, I'm lucky. If I carry on by 40 I won't be healthy. It's a slow process changing your relationship with food but it can be done. Family etc have an impact - I live with my parents and this week I've turned down three takeaways Eben though watching them have it I wanted it too. It is hard, but worth it

Nicknacky · 27/02/2018 17:26

Op, eating as little today as you say you are is not helping at all. It WILL not help you lose weight.

I have read this thread and the advice that has been given is sensible, do-able and most of all, achievable. But having read all that you think "oh i will just eat bread as pizza today".

What is it you want people to say? Honestly?

BerylStreep · 27/02/2018 17:32

Op I think you are getting some very harsh responses here. Things I would suggest:

Low carb High Fat - come and join us on the Low carb boot camp threads. We're a friendly supportive bunch and people are achieving excellent results. Bonus is that we are never hungry and food is delicious 😋

Diet Doctor website. Has loads of information on low carb high fat, also known as ketogenic diet.

Zoe Harcombe. Someone had mentioned her already on the thread. She has some very good thinking around food intolerances, hypoglycaemia and Candida overgrowth. Also broadly fits in to the LCHF category but allows some carbs. Her books are well worth a read.

Whole30.com. Paleo way of eating, 30 day elimination diet with structured reintroduction afterwards. Focuses on identifying foods that may you may be intolerant to. I can really highly recommend. I love the fact that they are so committed to spreading the word that a lot of the info on their website is free.

Read The Secret Life Of Fat. If you like the science behind things, this is an amazing read. It explains that Eat Less Move More, whilst attractive in its simplicity, is now being accepted as being outdated advice, and that it is down to much more complex processes.

TalkinPeace · 27/02/2018 17:33

My my, you are a cheery positive soul aren't you.
I sympathise with your GP

If you can get on websites on your phone, how come you cannot access apps ?

bimbodoc · 27/02/2018 17:33

3 point plan, slightly tongue in cheek.

  1. Get dog
  1. Walk dog
  1. Give dog half your food.
