To hate heels for little girls

RainOnATinRoof · 26/02/2018 20:30

For work I was involved in running a family event over the weekend. I was shocked at how many little girls were wearing high heels. Like this, but also a lot of boots with heels even higher. On girls age 6-10.

It's one thing for an adult to choose to wear heels, but buying them for a child? Do people really not understand how damaging they are? They alter the gait causing unnatural stress on feet, ankles, knees, hips, spines etc. I don't know why someone would want to subject a growing body to this.

When I was a girl I coveted high heels (but children's heels didn't really exist back then outside of tap classes), so I can understand that some children may beg for them, but parents can always say no. Just because they are in the shops doesn't mean you have to buy them! (note, I'm not talking about the plastic dress up heels which are usually worn around the house only).

YANBU I think they look awful, however, I definitely wore shoes like this to prep primary school in the late 90s/early 00s and so did every other girl I knew Blush

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 26/02/2018 21:18

Yanbu, I agree with you, but so many wouldn’t dare to say no to their DC, if they want they get.

jaimelannistersgoldenhand · 26/02/2018 21:23

The average 10 year old is in shoe size 4-6 (adult size) so not as ridiculous as these www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/world-us-canada-39442090

My size 2 feet can handle heels much higher than those. 3 inches is about my limit.

If I did have a girl of that age range and needed occasional party shoes, I'd prefer something with a strap like those to a slip on ballet pump style where the foot is compromised to keep the foot in.

StickThatInYourPipe · 26/02/2018 21:30

Wearing heels never effected me running jumping dancing (still doesn’t ha!)

I love shoes all types of shoes. Nothing to do with men, I have some that are just collection pieces and are displayed in lit boxes in my spare room

Don’t think those heels would be good wearing all the time but as a one off for short period should be fine. They only looked about 1 inch.

StickThatInYourPipe · 26/02/2018 21:32

Just looked, between 3 - 4 cm so about an inch and a bit

LynetteScavo · 26/02/2018 21:35

Well, I think heels on children (as in the OPs link) are bloody awful. I appreciate it's a matter of taste, but personally I find them tacky and of course they're restrictive.

I know lots of people who are extremely sensible about most things but will buy these shoes for their DDs, but then some people smoke and others give their toddlers fruitshoots, and their DC turn out pretty much OK.

Do I guess it's a mater if taste.

YANBU I think they are awful and I visibly cringe when I see little girls wearing them... especially pre schoolers.

SoftSheen · 26/02/2018 21:44

YANBU they are horrible and totally unnecessary. What's wrong with a pair of sparkly ballet flats, if a little girl wants some special party shoes?

stickygotstuck · 26/02/2018 23:24

Well, I find strong, chunky muscular legs rather fetching in women. Am I alone in that?

And yes, OP, I agree, heels are a terrible choice for young girls. For all human persons, really.

StellaWouldYouTakeMeHome · 26/02/2018 23:42

They make heels for little girls now? You learn something new every day.

JoeyMaynardssolidlump · 26/02/2018 23:46

fraiser you describe your baby neice as looking like a hooker?

Wow just wow.

frasier · 26/02/2018 23:48

That's how she's dressed Joey. As you say, wow just wow.

DeleteOrDecay · 26/02/2018 23:51

YANBU, these type of shoe are horribly restrictive and bad for growing feet/legs/back. Children need to be able to run, jump etc. Why would you restrict a girls ability to do these normal childhood things?

There's a reason boys don't have this kind of footwear marketed at them.

I’m amazed how judgemental people are. I bet a tenner if a Mum on here said is it OK to buy my son the same high heels the majority of answers would be of course.

I think you'd lose that bet. Children shouldn't wear restrictive footwear full stop.

JoeyMaynardssolidlump · 26/02/2018 23:52

Glaze

Sadly not true there. I adore heels and wedges and hate flats. They are awful for my back issues.

However my teen dds will wear really lovely clothes and then wear docs or converses. I could weep Grin

Still their choices as wearing heels are mine Grin

JoeyMaynardssolidlump · 26/02/2018 23:53

How do you dress s baby as a hooker? Is that a prostitute in the uk? Describe that then as I am baffled you could use those terms

IncyWincyGrownUp · 26/02/2018 23:54

I work in a school, quite a few of the children wear these. They’re not appropriate and the quality is crap.

Pennywhistle · 26/02/2018 23:54

In general girls will only wear these shoes for about 2 hours at a party. So any damage would limited.

I do agree though OP that they are unnecessary and my DD is not allowed them.

It’s actually quite difficult to avoid them after size 1 though as they are sometimes they are only party shoe that has a strap.

HildaZelda · 26/02/2018 23:56

Storm in a teacup. I had a pair of shoes like that almost 30 years ago when I was a child and they certainly haven't 'damaged' me in any way.

JoeyMaynardssolidlump · 26/02/2018 23:58

incy

They weren’t at school! Totally irrelevant

FreshHerbs · 27/02/2018 00:14

Is thinking the OP was born on another planet.

Nothing wrong with heels like that. Like others said girls were not at school or rock climbing were they.

At an event where they can wear there best dresses and have a bit of fun.

Somebody needs to get a grip

LockedOutOfMN · 27/02/2018 00:16

I wore those shoes when I was 6 to parties in the 1980s. They're party shoes and the heels are about 3cm. high. I think they're fine.

JoeyMaynardssolidlump · 27/02/2018 00:17

Will no one think of the chiiildren! Poor mites dressing up for a fun party and there’s the op
Organising the fun event! Wink
