DH embarrassed by my sensitivity

1000 replies

MarysLittleLamb · 26/02/2018 12:52

I get very moved by certain types of art and music, so much so that I occasionally cry. Last year we went to the Louvre and I ended up silently weeping at a number of art works. When we got out of the gallery DH admitted that he finds it all a bit over the top and unnecessary - as if I do it on purpose!

Anyway we've just got back from Rome. I became a little overwhelmed in the coliseum when I thought about the violence and death that had taken place there. DH said I was the only one in the entire place crying and he was fed up with it. I explained that I don't do it on purpose, it just gets to me.

We went to the Sistine Chappell the day after and I ended up screaming at the MichaelAngelo. A number of tourists tried to console me but DH just walked off muttering "for fucks sake". I felt so stupid. When we got out DH had a massive rant at me about how I spoil everything for him and he often wishes he was with someone normal who could visit places without making a scene. He also declared that he no longer enjoys travelling with me. I'm gutted because travel is the main thing we do together. AIBU to think I can't change who I am or should I??

Bloody hell you sound horrendously gringe sorry but you do

londonmummy1966 · 26/02/2018 13:22

YAVVU - you probably ruined the experience of the Sistine Chapel for lots of others including your husband. I can't say I'd blame your husband for refusing to go and view another work of art until he'd seen you escorted sobbing from the building and knew the coast was clear.

Quite acceptable to shed the odd tear but you don't have to say anything nor do you need to scream. You mention sensitivity to music as well - do you scream during concerts too?

MissBartlettsconscience · 26/02/2018 13:22

Oh Op, your performance is masterful.

Brava!

chocatoo · 26/02/2018 13:23

OP I think you need to get a bit of a grip...weeping and wailing at home is OTT but OK, but in a public place is weird and embarrassing for those around you. A discreet eye dab or rapid blink at the most is all that is really appropriate in such circumstances.

GnotherGnu · 26/02/2018 13:23

You say you get equally emotional about music. I assume, however, that you manage to control yourself during concerts since otherwise you would certainly get thrown out. Why can't you do that at other times?

StubbleTurnips · 26/02/2018 13:23

I think you probably need some help in managing emotions tbh.

mikeyssister · 26/02/2018 13:23

What's the Michelangelo? He was a person, who's dead!!

I bawl crying at everything, it's a standing family joke, but I've never "wailed" or "screamed" in public, not even at my mother's funeral.

You need to seriously cop on to yourself.

SilverHairedCat · 26/02/2018 13:23

This is amazing. OP can't be real, she'd have died under the withering glares of many an old lady before now.

SpringEquinox · 26/02/2018 13:24

It's a thing, called the Stendhal syndrome - being overcome by the beauty of art. The Sistine Chapel stewards are well used to visitors keeling over ( though partly that is also because they have been standing in an unusual position for them, with head flung back looking upwards. ) Particularly affects Japanese tourists, allegedly .

I, too, felt like screaming the first time I saw it, but mainly due to the ridiculous number of other visitors in one tiny space. The second, I booked on a semi-private view and got a proper look without swooning.

Trinity66 · 26/02/2018 13:24

Sweet lord screaming at paintings? I'm on DHs side tbh

Omgineedanamechange · 26/02/2018 13:24

Nah, too far OP, you had me until the old lady comment. Entertaining thread though.

KriticalSoul · 26/02/2018 13:24

getting emotional about things is fine, being outwardly dramatic about it and weeping and wailing isn't.

trulybadlydeeply · 26/02/2018 13:24

I honestly think you need to seek some type of therapy or counselling for this OP, this is not normal, rational behaviour, and you are spoiling trips away for your DH, and probably for those around you at the time when you have these outbursts.

I can well imagine I would shed a tear if I went to Ground Zero, however the way you reacted sounds enormously disrespectful. It's not about you.

lookingforthecorkscrew · 26/02/2018 13:25

You're lucky you don't get chucked out of places for behaving like a tit. There's being moved and there's behaving like a moron - you have crossed over into moron territory. Try thinking about the other paying customers around you, and their experience.

God knows what you'd be like at Auschwitz.

FuckyNellYaBastad · 26/02/2018 13:25

Bloody hell don’t go to Florence! David will finish you off!

KateAdiesEarrings · 26/02/2018 13:25

I think if I was your DH, I would laugh at you. It's so ott Grin and I say that as someone who did have a little tear at the Colosseum and Pompeii. But the thought of someone screaming has really tickled me.
I so want this to be true.

but they wouldn't let me go back
You probably have the distinction of being the only person in living memory to be banned from the Sistine Chapel.
They've probably already issued the Italian version of the ASBO.
Go you...

Sheila56 · 26/02/2018 13:25

I cry a lot, mostly at sad films, the grandchildren, they do drive me mad haha..And the news..But I would never scream in public, or even cry in public..And I'm fairly outgoing..you need help op..

starlightafar · 26/02/2018 13:25

I'm sorry I don't believe anyone screams in situations like this. If so, you need some serious emotional resilience therapy.

PositivelyPERF · 26/02/2018 13:25

I would be crying too, if I had to put up with having you weeping and wailing every time we looked at art! FFS

GnotherGnu · 26/02/2018 13:26

AIBU to think I can't change who I am or should I??

You acknowledge that your behaviour seriously upset at least one other person and ruined the experience for everyone else. You had to be escorted out and they wouldn't let you go back in. Your husband is so pissed off that he doesn't want to travel with you ever again.

Why do you even have to ask this question?

starlightafar · 26/02/2018 13:26

Spat out my tea at the ASBO!!!!

RollTopBath · 26/02/2018 13:26

This very funny but can’t be real. Nobody is that daft, surely? I get silent tears at Auschwitz. I get a numbed silence at the end of Schindler’s list. A smile at a beautiful Botticelli maybe but screaming at a Michaelangelo in the Sistine chapel is at once odd, excessive and somewhat disrespectful of the sacred nature of the building.
