DH embarrassed by my sensitivity

MarysLittleLamb · 26/02/2018 12:52

I get very moved by certain types of art and music, so much so that I occasionally cry. Last year we went to the Louvre and I ended up silently weeping at a number of art works. When we got out of the gallery DH admitted that he finds it all a bit over the top and unnecessary - as if I do it on purpose!

Anyway we've just got back from Rome. I became a little overwhelmed in the coliseum when I thought about the violence and death that had taken place there. DH said I was the only one in the entire place crying and he was fed up with it. I explained that I don't do it on purpose, it just gets to me.

We went to the Sistine Chappell the day after and I ended up screaming at the MichaelAngelo. A number of tourists tried to console me but DH just walked off muttering "for fucks sake". I felt so stupid. When we got out DH had a massive rant at me about how I spoil everything for him and he often wishes he was with someone normal who could visit places without making a scene. He also declared that he no longer enjoys travelling with me. I'm gutted because travel is the main thing we do together. AIBU to think I can't change who I am or should I??

I'm just glad someone asked who Dobby was. I was dying to know. Thanks.

ribena71 · 26/02/2018 20:34

I'm just glad to see that there are other people on this thread who were underwhelmed by the Sistine Chapel. Blush

HebeMumsnet · 26/02/2018 20:37

Blimey @SlackPanther! Are you sure she's up to a trip to Centre Parcs? Wink Don't you think Rome was enough excitement?

Emmageddon · 26/02/2018 20:38

there was a woman on our tour who swallowed a pebble from the Colosseum so she could connect with history.

What the actual fuck?

gingergenius · 26/02/2018 20:41

Haha it's not often @MNHQ reduces me to tears but this was one of those moments.

And this is why I stay!

cunningartificer · 26/02/2018 20:42

OP, are you Margery Kempe?

crumpet · 26/02/2018 20:43

In was reminded of the Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock: “In the rooms the women come and go, —talking— —of— wailing at Michelangelo”

gingergenius · 26/02/2018 20:43

I went to Rome on my honeymoon. Not only did I get stalked by a flasher, the fucking Sistine chapel was closed.

Even then, I only wailed internally!

crumpet · 26/02/2018 20:43

Bugger strike through fail

joystir59 · 26/02/2018 20:45

It is possible to be profoundly moved by beauty without disturbing others who are having their own experience of the same work of art. The fact that you feel it is ok to wail and draw attention to yourself I'd just bonkers, and I hope I'm never in an art gallery or other beautiful place at the same time as you OP

user1469751309 · 26/02/2018 20:55

This is quite literally the best thread I have ever read I am choking with laughter please can we move this to classics MNHQ?

TheSassyAssassin · 26/02/2018 20:58

Might have let out a small squeal in the Sistine Chapel as I tried to melt into the crowds and get out PDQ (because I had absolutely not (!) broken the rules and sneaked a few pics...). I would post them here but I fear the OP's head may spin a full 360° if I did! Brilliant thread Grin

Topseyt · 26/02/2018 20:59

Tygr, I fell and broke my arm badly at the Louvre.

I didn't scream or wail either. They took me into an office by the gatehouse and called an ambulance.

DuchessofManchester · 26/02/2018 21:00

Sod your DH OP we'll all come on holiday with you. It'll be the mumsnet version of coach trip.

ParadiseCity · 26/02/2018 21:20

The Shetland pony thing has got me singing ten thousand candles in the wind. Sad

DH embarrassed by my sensitivity
IWouldLikeToKnow · 26/02/2018 21:20

Best and funniest thing I've read in quite a while. And I didn't even make it through the full thread. I'm a crier, but good lord, screaming at the Sistine Chapel is a whole other level!!! Thanks OP

ChasedByBees · 26/02/2018 21:21

Wizzywig I love that video. Grin

theWarOnPeace · 26/02/2018 21:29

This thread has had me knocking out Woody the Woodpecker type LOLZ..... I have only one wish, that the OP returns and tells us about more of her ‘performance tourism’. OP have you ever been to Florence?! You’ll be speaking in tongues Grin

Topseyt · 26/02/2018 21:31

I think a new site sub-section entitled "Troll Classics" might be needed.

This would fit very neatly into that.

Don't delete the thread, or we might all have to stage a mass wailing.

londonista · 26/02/2018 21:38

Wizzywig that video ... oh I'm crying! Or am I screaming? I don't know. So emotional. Where's my husband when I need him?

actuallyithinkitdoes · 26/02/2018 21:46

TheHeraldOfAndraste Don't worry Len they repeat those shows all the time.

actuallyithinkitdoes · 26/02/2018 21:47

HighwayDragon1 me too! It was so magical

GabsAlot · 26/02/2018 21:48

is this for real

i have cried silently at a few things but wailing so peopel have to comfort you-nah

not only would my dh walk off he'd prob piss himself laughing

NotACleverName · 26/02/2018 21:48

OP: I think you should go to Centerparcs in future.

I dunno, I think even that could be a bit dangerous. I always got totes emosh seeing ducklings and squirrels scampering about in the forest. No screaming at them, though; I have some self-control.

paxillin · 26/02/2018 21:51

I fear the urge to scream just to see what happens will be overwhelming should I ever go back to the Sistine Chapel.
