DH embarrassed by my sensitivity

MarysLittleLamb · 26/02/2018 12:52

I get very moved by certain types of art and music, so much so that I occasionally cry. Last year we went to the Louvre and I ended up silently weeping at a number of art works. When we got out of the gallery DH admitted that he finds it all a bit over the top and unnecessary - as if I do it on purpose!

Anyway we've just got back from Rome. I became a little overwhelmed in the coliseum when I thought about the violence and death that had taken place there. DH said I was the only one in the entire place crying and he was fed up with it. I explained that I don't do it on purpose, it just gets to me.

We went to the Sistine Chappell the day after and I ended up screaming at the MichaelAngelo. A number of tourists tried to console me but DH just walked off muttering "for fucks sake". I felt so stupid. When we got out DH had a massive rant at me about how I spoil everything for him and he often wishes he was with someone normal who could visit places without making a scene. He also declared that he no longer enjoys travelling with me. I'm gutted because travel is the main thing we do together. AIBU to think I can't change who I am or should I??

OMG this is great 😂

muffyduffster · 26/02/2018 18:24

Have thoroughly enjoyed this thread.
I have some sympathy for the OP... I'm a bit of a (usually quiet) crier, and my exP used to give me Hmm looks so I'd try not to if possible, especially in public... We went to see the Clint Eastwood film Gran Torino (sp?) in the cinema and I tried to suppress crying when an important character died. My restraint lasted for about 20-30 seconds and then I let out an inadvertent wail at the next scene (not at all sad) and made everyone in the cinema jump, and he hissed at me Sad makes me laugh now though!

GnotherGnu · 26/02/2018 18:28

I really want to hear from OP's DH. He must be a total saint to have put up with this for any length of time.

fudgiebutt · 26/02/2018 18:40

Thank you for sharing this! I'm not feeling well and this has just cheered me right up Grin

LemonysSnicket · 26/02/2018 18:48

I get testy at adverts and sometimes music. I imagine you sobbing at tourist attractions is quite humiliating tbh, you should be able to control yourself and you probably look mental.

DalekDalekDalek · 26/02/2018 18:50

I'm really glad I didn't read this anywhere public. People would be looking at me the same way people look at the OP!

Star for making us all laugh so much OP!

But isn't David in Florence? Hmm

Rosamund1 · 26/02/2018 19:01

I cried at a dettol advert when I was pregnant because the dad hugged the little boy who fell off his bike.

I need to train harder to work up a Michelangelo scream.

Munchyseeds · 26/02/2018 19:04

I do think you need to get a little help to manage your emotions.....they do seem a bit OTT!

BishopBrennansArse · 26/02/2018 19:04

Ooh I'm going to Rome in June...

Soubriquet · 26/02/2018 19:12

I must admit I'm terribly emotional.

I cried at my child's first nativity, I cried on the rememberance day 2 mins silence at our local memorial, I KNOW I would cry at things like the holocaust museum, ground zero and Anne Franks home, but I cry quietly and I try to be discreet.

If I feel myself about to sob, I would actually remove myself from the situation and do it elsewhere

AdoraBell · 26/02/2018 19:12

I often shed a few quiet tears at films, but wailing at a work of art? That sounds like a possibly psychological issue to me.

TheHeraldOfAndraste · 26/02/2018 19:17

Bishop Brennan is it for an audience with the Holy Father?

HotCrossBun12 · 26/02/2018 19:18

I'd find that a bit of a cringe. Sorry.

FrancinePefko · 26/02/2018 19:20

Everyone here is being very mean to you OP.
I am sorry for this. I truly am.

What your H did is emotional abuse, minimising and patriarchal oppression.

Sunshineface123 · 26/02/2018 19:20

I wouldn't want to travel with you either. How embarrassing!

My husband was so moved by one of the sculptures at the Vatican that he cried in a restaurant for 30 mins afterwards.

I was so embarrassed that - when he went to the toilet - I told the waiter that DH's mother had died and that's why he was upset. DH's mother had died, so that was technically true. But it had happened 10 years previously.

Fe2O3Girl · 26/02/2018 19:22

I want a MumsNet “howling at artwork” flash mob to happen.

HighwayDragon1 · 26/02/2018 19:22

OP, I cried when I saw the Disney castle in real life and it was only 2 weeks ago also the fireworks...

steamcomingoutofmyears22 · 26/02/2018 19:27

Now op I'm quite sensitive and like a good cry myself. However, from all of your posts you really sound over dramatic and as if you're enjoying making a scene.
Your dh has been really honest with you, your dramatics are spoiling his holidays and causing him stress. So you have two options, keep a lid on the histrionics out of respect for your dh or visit places separately. Your choice.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 26/02/2018 19:27

Ooh, I once cried at the Tate Modern. Well, had hysterics, really.

It was about twenty years ago, and a friend and I had taken a sicky from work to see the New Gallery .

Friend had brought a spliff, so we smoked that on the Southbank, then went in.

We were fine until we looked at the Pollocks, and there was a plaque underneath one of them talking about him 'dripping and pouring paint', which us stoned idiots couldn't cope with at all.

We got glared at a lot, then left.

No fingering that I remember, though.

SofieMonde · 26/02/2018 19:27

@FE203 imagine if the acoustics were brilliant..the Scream would resonate all around and drive people insane lol Screaming at the dinosaur at the Science museum or in the Whispering gallery at St Pauls, the possibilities are endless :)

treeofhearts · 26/02/2018 19:28

Trolling done right. But don't put it in classics ffs. She'll be overwrought and AIBU doesn't do comforting.

Mummyoflittledragon · 26/02/2018 19:30

^^
Oh god there’s some posters openly admitting upset involving sculptures at the Vatican, art and princess castles. No no no. You’ve got it all wrong. Empathy is not required. We have Sophie’s approval.
