To ask why do meat eaters have such a problem with vegans?!

Ok, genuine question, and I've been around here long enough to know this is probably going to descend into a bunfight but meh Grin
Seriously. Why?! I've only recently noticed it since doing Veganuary and mainly carrying it on now even though it's finished. Up until then, I eat everything - fish, meat, cheese.....but at the same time eating lots of vegan and vegetarian food too as DH is a long time vegetarian.
(Who's gone vegan after completing Veganuary.)
Been out for dinner today.
"Surely you can have a little bit?!" (Erm, no Confused )
We've also had "but it's not healthy!" (that all depends on how you do it,surely? I know I was eating a lot healthier during Veganuary as I was conscious about what I was eating and not just mindlessly shovelling stuff in - even though I love mindlessly shoving stuff in Smile
Or you'll get a bacon sandwich shoved in your face. "You want this bacon, don't you? Don't you?"
Erm,no not really. Confused
I don't give a shit whether people eat meat, why are they so bothered that I'm vegan for a while?!
Must be exhausting to be a proper one!
not including the militant ones that tell you meat is murder as they can just go away and practise the saying each to their own...

A vegan diet sure isn't healthy if it's mainly chips, white bread or rice, and hummus and deep-fried objects from the health food store, with lots of haribo and dark chocolate and crisps.

My assistant at work took me for lunch on my first day and started discussing the food and mentioned to someone he hadn't had the soup that day as it wasn't vegan. He then apologised profusely for mentioning veganism within 5 minutes of meeting me and being such a cliché! Luckily he's the kind of vegan that generally never mentions it and just evangelises the local falafel stall, which is absolutely fantastic (cheese optional). And is happy to buy wine for functions that meets his standards as well as mine (this is the budget, need this many bottles, taste nice.)

sofato5miles · 24/02/2018 17:05

I posted earlier about not being arsed to cater around vegans, despite sympathy for their cause. There were a few replies that implied I should just follow a recipe. How bloody arrogant. We have around 5 couples plus kids over most weekends. I take pride in what I offer. I am not going to remove key ingredients for a party of 20 up to satisfy one person's gastro leanings. And someone who doesn't understand that is a bit of a social outcast type behaviour. So alienating.
Today at lunch we had a variety of roasted meats and the pescatarian had salmon. We had one salad that had cheese .

I literally don't have to take any account of any adult's allergies, though interestingly, one child today has a nut allergy, so we ate separately from the kids to avoid cross contamination.

DalekDalekDalek · 24/02/2018 17:14

I literally couldn't care less about what other people do or do not eat unless I need to cook for you (in which case I will go above and beyond to cater for you).

However, if you bang on about your choice and try and make me feel guilty for my choice then you can do one.

IME there are preachy, superior people of both sides. Those people need to get a life and stop judging everyone else. It's none of their business.

agentdaisy · 24/02/2018 17:18

I'm a meat eater and live steak but sometimes I go for the vegetarian option for a change.

I don't give two hoots what other people choose to eat whether that's vegetarian, vegan, no carb, dairy free, paleo or whatever the latest celeb inspired food trend.

What I have a problem with is those who are militant about their food choices trying to convert me. Even worse is when vegetarians/vegans try to put me off what I'm eating with emotive language about meat. Just as annoying is my cousin who is low carbing who never shuts up about the amount of carbs in everything anyone eats around her. She has a face like a slapped arse if anyone orders something that she deems to have too many carbs and god forbid you order pasta - she practically has a heart attack.

I had a friend at college who was vegan but you'd only know if you asked or happened to notice she never ate meat/dairy etc. We talked about it once or twice but she never tried to convince me to stop eating meat or tried to make me feel bad about it. In complete contrast was a girl at uni who was a militant evangelical vegan, she wouldn't even wear wool never mind leather. Everyone within five miles knew she was vegan as she never shut up about it and used to try and make everyone feel guilty for eating meat and wearing leather. She drove me, and everyone else, absolutely batshit crazy to the point that we all stopped inviting her out if we were going to be eating as she made it so unbearable.

Mybrows · 24/02/2018 17:29

I honestly think these 'veganuary' vegans are the worst ones. They're the ones that have been sucked in by something as superficial as the idea of doing it for a month (like dry January or whatever rather than cutting down your alcohol intake in general) and they've also often been sucked in by bullshit vegan propaganda and enjoy feeling all militant and sanctimonious about it for a bit (meanwhile still carrying their leather handbags etc... )

UnicornRainbowColours · 24/02/2018 17:31

I have no issue with vegans I respect their choice. What I have issue with is Vegans who target farmers etc trying Make a living. Etc

gillybeanz · 24/02/2018 17:35

I don't have a problem with anyone with different views to me as long as they don't try to convert me/ tell me my views are wrong.

starlightafar · 24/02/2018 17:52

Sounds a bit like how people are when you are on a diet. Here, have a piece of cake, one slice won't hurt.
I think people are threatened by others' willpower. That's my opinion anyway.

Sniv · 24/02/2018 18:45

My DP doesn't eat meat; I eat loads. She doesn't care that I eat it, and I don't care that she doesn't. It has never caused an issue between us. We do cook separately most nights, but we might have anyway as we have vastly different preferences when it comes to everything about food.

To be honest, among my friends, there's two with long lists of genuine allergies/intolerances, two vegans, three vegetarians and one insanely picky person, so My DP is one of the easier ones to cater for. The only person I think I've ever given hard time to is the picky person, because their diet is genuinely astonishing...

I don't really see people lecturing my DP about not eating meat, but I have seen meat-eaters policing what she eats: crowing or acting as if she's a complete reprehensible hypocrite if she eats something, even inadvertently, that contains a trace of animal product. She genuinely doesn't make her diet other people's business except when it's completely necessary, so there's no justification for it. Everyone who does this is an arse.

FreeNiki · 24/02/2018 21:03

The vegans on here harrassed mnhq until they got a whole topic here.

Says it all

PleaseDontGoadTheToad · 24/02/2018 21:12

The vegans on here harrassed mnhq until they got a whole topic here.

And I, along with several others, also "harassed" MNHQ until we got a Mumsnetters with SN topic.

Do you have a problem with that too? Or is it just the pesky vegans you have a problem with "harassing" (or as most people would call it, requesting) HQ for their own space?

FreeNiki · 24/02/2018 21:15

Read half the threads on it.

I feel revolted at the sight of meat....dead birds etc etc etc

It's a platform to slag off meat eaters by the extreme ones

PleaseDontGoadTheToad · 24/02/2018 21:17

Here's an idea. You could just simply, you know, not read the bloody threads there if you don't like what people say. Radical I know.

FreeNiki · 24/02/2018 21:22

Or vegans could shut their fucking mouths.

This thread is another classic and most people have said it is the other way around. It's the vegans that force their views down everyone's throats whilst continuing to wear leather shoes and carry leather handbags

Grin
PurpleDaisies · 24/02/2018 21:23

freeniki are you really shocked that some people who don’t eat meat finding it revolting? Plenty of non-vegans find certain foods horrible.

It’s difficult to deny that a roast chicken is in fact a dead bird.

FreeNiki · 24/02/2018 21:25

freeniki are you really shocked that some people who don’t eat meat finding it revolting?

Im shocked that they wont shut up about it.

Frillyhorseyknickers · 24/02/2018 21:29

I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t like bacon.

No seriously, we’re farmers and I dislike militant vegans who humanise animals with emotive language like “rape” and “murder” because it’s bollocks. But more importantly, as a farmer, I understand how completely unworkable a vegan world is.

What’s that saying - you can’t educate pork? That’s my thoughts on vegans.

PurpleDaisies · 24/02/2018 21:30

They’re posting on the VEGAN board. Why should they shut up about it over there? I don’t understand why you’re even reading it.

KochabRising · 24/02/2018 21:37

It’s difficult to deny that a roast chicken is in fact a dead bird.

But no one does deny it. They just know it’s a dead bird, they’re aware of that. To start going on about ‘ooooh you’re eating a corpse’ is childish, confrontational and implies they’re superior and that the other persons choices are wrong/inferior.

I eat meat. I’m aware of what meat is, and I do t have an issue with meat that’s produced to decent standards. Some people don’t want to eat meat and I have no issue with that either. Each to their own.

I have a massive issue with people sneering, judging and preaching, or even worse, harassing farmers. Moderate vegans who just get on with eating that way must be so embarrassed by these people.

kubex · 24/02/2018 21:56

Vegans should be applauded for their choice.

A plant based diet is a far superior way to eat in every way - environmentally, ethically and health wise.

PleaseDontGoadTheToad · 24/02/2018 22:00

So let me get this straight @FreeNiki. You think vegans posting on a vegan topic should 'shut their fucking mouths' because you lack the willpower to simply not click on said vegan topic.

Righto then Grin

PeerieBreeks · 24/02/2018 22:06

@kubex tell that to our relatively high-profile locally ex-vegan.

High profile because she trained in vegan nutrition and cooking, and runs workshops and courses.

She was also told by her doctor that she needed to eat at the very least fish, as her medical issues were directly related to her vegan diet. She eats chicken now too.

kubex · 24/02/2018 22:13

@PeerieBreeks I find that very hard to believe.

More likely is that her diet wasn't balanced correctly.

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 24/02/2018 22:21

*Vegans should be applauded for their choice.

Absolutely agree - and that's coming from a meat eater. I just wish I had the will power to do it Confused

Eggzandbacon · 24/02/2018 22:31

Being vegan isn't necessarily a good choice environmentally at all!
