To ask for an explanation re: toilet brushes

I keep seeing them mentioned and wonder whether I am supposed/not supposed to have one.

I personally like those things where you attached a wipe that then flushed away but I don't think they sell those anymore.

Toilet brushes are the work of the devil.

Utterly foul.

UrgentScurryfunge · 23/02/2018 00:42

Our household couldn't manage without toilet brushes. Marigolds & loo roll would not do anything to relieve the caked on offerings that frequently refuse to flush away and lie undiscovered for several hours after either of the young DCs evacuated their bowels.

It's not environmentally friendly to be constantly binning toilet brushes/ sponges/ gloves etc. The drainage system can cope with the consequences of cleaning by combining bleach and toilet brush. The brush is actually held by the handle not the bristly toilet end Hmm

I hate it if I've had an IBS attack where no toilet brush is accessible. Far, far less healthy to be smearing around disintegrating toilet roll by hand, and no way am I doing that in a toilet of unknown cleaning history Envy Just provide a toilet brush sitting in bleachy water FFS.

noenergy · 23/02/2018 00:45

No loo brush but wouldn't stick my hand in either. Bleach does it all, toilet is sparking clean.

And for who ever puts the loo brush in the dishwasher, that is just vile, absolutely disgusting.

First time I've heard of the mooncup as well in the dishwasher. Will make me think twice before eating or drinking in anyone's house.

NoqontroI · 23/02/2018 00:50

Toilet roll to wipe it off quickly, wash your hands (they are totally washable) and flush. But then years of wiping other people's arses makes me not care that much. I'd rather do that then have a poo crumb toilet brush festering.

Those of you who only use bleach with no manual labour- you have a white toilet but it's not clean.

Invisible jobbies- how cool.

speakout · 23/02/2018 07:11

Just paper here. No brush.

Squirrelpatrol2174 · 23/02/2018 08:01

I have a brush. I bleach round the rim, brush, re-bleach and plonk the brush in the bleachy water at the bottom of the loo for half hour. If any germs manage to live on my loo brush after that then fair play to them (but I don't think any germs do survive my loo cleans Grin)

How dirty do you think it gets? It’s not like anyone is touching the inside of the toilet. Do you clean the inside of the cistern too?

ExhaustedAndHormonal · 23/02/2018 08:06

I have one. I keep bleach in the canister part. I bleach the loo daily too. And often renew the brush. Probably 6 weekly

ExhaustedAndHormonal · 23/02/2018 08:08

I do manual labour with the bleach.. Lol
I'm also one of those who mixes stuff at the same time.. Bleach, harpic etc.. My loo is near front door and would hate for it to smell in anyway so I'm very ocd with it.

ferrier · 23/02/2018 08:18

How dirty do you think it gets?

It gets brown stains and it gets limescale, neither of which are removed by bleach -bleach whitens and kills germs but it doesn't remove 'residue' - plus it's pretty toxic to be putting down a toilet every day. I do a proper clean of the toilet once a week and a quick scrub with the toilet brush on other days if required.

ferrier · 23/02/2018 08:19

And the residue attracts more dirt meaning it needs to be properly cleaned much more often.

Summerlovin24 · 23/02/2018 16:58

They still sell the brushes with the end that flushes away. Thats the only way

MamaDuckling · 23/02/2018 18:19

Basically, the only decent alternative is a hose, with a powerful jet. This is commonplace in many other countries..... no loo brush needed. Wish the UK had caught on!

magratvonlipwig · 23/02/2018 18:36

I agree... disgusting but necessary cos im not putting my hand in there !

After use i hold it under a running flush then drop in back in the loo with a squirt of bleach. Leave it there half an hour then put it back in its holder

WheresYouWheelieBin · 24/02/2018 06:42

I have Norwex loo brushes, they are fabulous. Silicone bristles which are difficult for germs to stick to. Once a month I give them a good soaking by filling the holder with boiling water and disinfectant. Then I let them dry in the sun. I couldn’t imagine not having loo brushes. Bleach just whitens the stuck on poo, it doesn’t clean it all away. Toilet bowls need a good scrub.

50sQueen · 24/02/2018 06:54

I have 4, one for each toilet. You just need to keep them clean/ replace when filthy. Simple.

Tinkofhousepan · 24/02/2018 06:59

I have just got a super duper toilet brush! It is all silicone bristles so dishwasher friendly the bristles are spaced so that nothing nasty gets stuck in between them and it has a little thing that suspends it in the air to dry/air out once it's been used to wipe away any reminemts, and once flushed used to bleach the bowl making it pretty germ free and not a soggy haven for bacteria to breed!

Tinkofhousepan · 24/02/2018 07:00

mamaduckling is that what the hose is for??? No wonder I found it so hard to use!

StealthPolarBear · 24/02/2018 07:09

Flying monkeys you have a toilet brush for display?!

seven201 · 24/02/2018 07:23

I can't imagine life without a loo brush. I was once in a friend's house, did a poo and couldn't find a loo brush. I was too embarrassed so stuck my ungloved hand in and wiped with loo roll Blush. On the other end of the scale someone visited us and did a poo and left poo all over the loo brush. Just rinse it off in the loo!

UrsulaPandress · 24/02/2018 07:24

But but but how do you toilet brush users get the brush from the toilet back to its holder after all that scrubbing and flushing without ..................... drips?

bluebells1 · 24/02/2018 07:32

@UrsulaPandress, Clean the brush in the water, hold for a few seconds so it drips off and put it back in the holder. never had any drips. My SIL usually follows a method she saw on youtube She hangs the brush off the seat and lets it dry completely before she pops it back.
