To ask for an explanation re: toilet brushes

I keep seeing them mentioned and wonder whether I am supposed/not supposed to have one.

I personally like those things where you attached a wipe that then flushed away but I don't think they sell those anymore.

Ikea. 50p. I always have a few spare so mine never get grim as so easily replaced. Plus they are bleached daily when I clean the toilets.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/02/2018 17:02

Squirting bleach & flushing does not get rid of thick skids

I have a loo brush & holder, replaced frequently
It's considerate to guests too, who probably don't carry rubber gloves with them everywhere, to hand-clean their skids

Vitalogy · 22/02/2018 17:02

I'd never heard of this toilet brush hate until MN. I just don't get it. Perfectly natural thing to use.

PickAChew · 22/02/2018 17:05

Do those flushable loo brush ends actually break down in the water, or do they sit clogging up sewers until some poor sap has to manually remove them?

Bramble71 · 22/02/2018 17:06

I use a brush, always with bleach and rinse it with a second flush. Not rinsing it anywhere else! However, I do buy new brushes very frequently. Nothing else works quite the same. Thankfully, we don't have a dishwasher, though I doubt I'd be tempted!

mypoosmellsofroses · 22/02/2018 17:07

I just don't feel comfortable with the amount of waste involved in replacing them regularly- even though they are v. cheap, that's a lot of plastic to be dumping - any alternatives , or better ways to keep them clean for longer?
Never use them myself - must have super clean as well as fragrant poo Grin but have one in each bathroom as DH and DS (24) use them every day.

MargoLovebutter · 22/02/2018 17:08

On the rare occasion I need a poo in someone else's house, I put loo roll down before I drop one, so I don't leave a massive skid - same as I do at work. I've never in my life cleaned someone else's loo because I used it!

Felicitycity · 22/02/2018 17:10

I haven't got one - never have , never will. I think they're hideous.
I don't have skid marks in my toilet. I put bleach down if neccessary.

TattyCat · 22/02/2018 17:11

I put loo roll down first every time - I can't stand splashes, never mind leaving marks...

Well, I've got one. I chose it myself as a birthday present from my sis. She protested somewhat at having to buy it—not because it's a bog brush but because she thinks that perfume or similar shit makes a better present Grin

Anyway, it's red and matches my stunning red bathroom.

Every now and then I find myself thinking that mumsnet is a very strange place.....

LemonShark · 22/02/2018 17:18

I don't see the point in them, all the ones I've ever used are too flimsy to get a good scrub.

I pour bleach down the toilet while I'm cleaning the rest of the bathroom then use a pair of rubber gloves and a scourer to clean the toilet bowl by hand. Right under the water and everything. It comes up sparkling. Then I bleach the gloves and keep them for next time or just dispose and get a new pair. If I have any medical rubber gloves to hand I just put them on over the washing up style gloves and then dispose of the medical gloves and the rubber ones are still fine to reuse.

prettypaws · 22/02/2018 17:18

I use cheap ones, bleach and replace. I have a new replacable one, but where do you buy the heads?

stevie69 · 22/02/2018 17:18

When it gets grimy I stick it in the top shelf of the dishwasher

Ah yes, reminds me of an incident with my ex DP (now by best friend and soul mate). I asked him to clean the toilet brush and holder. My intention was that he wipe round the holder with some disinfectant and a disposable wipe and then pop the brush back in the holder to sit in a little more disinfectant. Or something along those lines anyway.

But no, he popped the whole shooting match in with the washing up and I found the brush and holder on the draining board—it was pre dishwasher days—with all the clean pots.

And no, I am definitely not winding you up. The good news? 20 years later and we're both still here and in excellent health Grin

Thanks for the tip, but such is the power of the MN massive, Looblades have sold out already. Sad

ferrier · 22/02/2018 17:25

I have loo brushes but they're for personal skid mark removal alone. Now way would just squirting some stuff down get rid of skid marks. But by the same token, a loo brush does not clean a toilet thoroughly. For that, yes you do need to get the marigolds on and a decent bathroom sponge or similar and scrub under the rim and back as far up the outlet pipe as can be seen. If a cleaner refused to do this s/he wouldn't remain my cleaner for long.

StatelessPrincess · 22/02/2018 17:25

I have bum hoses, they're great, never have to deal with skids, just clean the loo with bleach and hot water

Singingtherapy · 22/02/2018 17:26

I've never had a toilet brush. Other people's skid marks are obviously another matter but I've never understood why people have such a problem cleaning their own from the bowl with a bit of toilet paper. You wipe it off your arse so what's the difference?

gamerchick · 22/02/2018 17:30

I'd never heard of this toilet brush hate until MN. I just don't get it. Perfectly natural thing to use.

Because there’s a disturbing amount of people who think the brush is for removing fresh skid marks.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 22/02/2018 17:34

Speakout- you put your loo brush in the dishwasher?
I didn't know you could get replaceable head ones. That's a game changer.

ferrier · 22/02/2018 17:35

It is!
And then rinsing under the flush and putting back in the holder.
My holders contain dreg ends of shampoo, soap, whatever was to hand.

SilverySurfer · 22/02/2018 17:42

For all of you having the vapours about using a loo brush, what do you think of speakout's idea of then putting it in the dishwasher Shock

QuoteMeYouFuckers · 22/02/2018 17:51

If you don't have a loo brush, what do you use to ram the poo down with when it won't flush?
