To ask why people think it's appropriate to smoke around their newborns or others children?

Had an ordeal today where we were out and my 10 month old dd was getting attention from a random lady.
Only for the lady to pull the cigarette from behind her and smoke it directly in front of dd! I have respiratory problems as does dp and I thought this was downright inappropriate. It's fine if you want to smoke but then I can't understand people like my aunt who chainsmoke in front of my 4 year old cousin. Makes me angry.

Mums who smoke whilst pushing pushchairs is pretty grim as well

Auspiciouspanda · 20/02/2018 21:19

Because they put their addiction above anything else and refuse to listen to any of the research because it’s inconvenient.

Kittykat93 · 20/02/2018 21:22

I smoke, but I'd never do it around my baby or other children. If ever I have one I go outside, use an outside coat, and wash hands/brush teeth when finished. I couldn't stand smelling smoke on him. Unfortunately it's an addiction and it's got me in its grip, I don't think I'll ever be free from it.

Twocatsonebaby · 20/02/2018 21:23

It's just dangerous. I think it's fine if they want to smoke, but I don't understand the general public side. WHY do people think its acceptable in front of children they don't know when they give them a bit of attention? It wouldn't have bothered me if she kept it behind her back. That was decent enough and we could've got on. But I see it all the time. Especially where I live. If I smoked I'd never dream of smoking in front of my children etc. I'd go outside. Admittedly outside is public but there's a place for it usually out the way

That's fine, I'd never knock the addiction. My brother used to depend on it as a way of coping with asbergers etc. So i can understand it entirely even though I don't and never will do it personally but children :( passive smoking is so bad for them. My little cousin has started having problems due to it from his mom and it makes me so sad for him

Had an ordeal today

What a sheltered life you must lead to call that an ordeal.

sweetkitty · 20/02/2018 21:26

It's disgusting, I'm as anti smoking as you can get. Grew up with 2 chain smokers, I must have stank to high heaven. The walls in our house were always yellow.

Worse than that fags were prioritised over everything even food, I remember asking my mum for new trainers which cost £10 as I had a hole in my old pair and being told she couldn't afford them only for her to go spend £20 on fags.

Also when you get the anti-smoking lesson at school and you think your mum and dad are going to die of cancer.

OutyMcOutface · 20/02/2018 21:28

Because they are stupid-as evidenced by their smokingin the first place.

Frusso · 20/02/2018 21:30

WHY do people think its acceptable in front of children they don't know when they give them a bit of attention?
Because they don't really give a shit about your children?

CanIhavedessertfirst · 20/02/2018 21:32

This riles me so much! I hate picking my sun up from nursery because there's always a gaggle if mums smoking right outside the gate, so I have to walk passed them with my baby. I don't know why anyone thinks it's acceptable to smoke around babies and children.

Elle8989 · 20/02/2018 21:36

Well I'm living with a pregant lady who smokes. It's annoying.

Twocatsonebaby · 20/02/2018 21:37

I don't really care too much about other people's kids. They aren't mine. But Im a decent enough person to even if I did smoke, never do it in front of a strangers child. It's just so rude

Pregnant? :o @elle gosh! I understand it must be hard to suddenly quit but that's so bad for her baby

That literally wasn't meant to be a grin face!

What was the ordeal? The smoking woman or something else?

Elle8989 · 20/02/2018 21:58

I know. We're not friends just in the same hostel. She has a midwife who knows so it's her choice. Was also in hospital recently and the pregnant person next to me was due any moment smoking. It doesn't seem that rare. They both don't seem to think it will cause the baby damage and that it I'll be ok.

NotACleverName · 20/02/2018 22:12

It's undoubtedly annoying, but I don't think it constitutes an "ordeal.."
