To sneak snacks into the cinema

I haven't been on MN in ages so don't know if this has been done recently. Just wondering if you think it's ok to take your own snacks to the cinema? I've never done it before but we are moving house next week so things are a little tight but I promised the girls a cinema trip during half term. Could do without the £10 for a popcorn and fruitshoot. They don't drink juice anyway so was thinking of taking their water bottles and stopping by the shop for a £1 bag of popcorn and some chocolate buttons, AIBU?

Oh dear @ChardonnaysPrettySister. Sadly most of us don't have your cast-iron willpower! Cinema + snacks is just something that us mere mortals do for pleasure and enjoyment. And also, logistically speaking, 'a couple of hours' isn't usually what it is, really, is it? If you factor in (just a scenario here, to break it down in the simple terms that we mortals live with 🙄) a) dinner at 6, b) walk the dog before you welcome babysitter, show her where wine/remote/ children are, c) hoof it down to the cine-complex place to meet Tracy at 8.15 ready for d) film starting at 8.30. It seems quite feasible that snacks would be consumed throughout...why not? By the time the film finishes at around 10.30 that's more than 'a couple of hours' since dinner. But well done 🥇 here's your medal for sucking the joy out of leisure time 🙄

I usually take my own. If they charged a semi sensible price I'd buy there, but £3 for a £1 bag of sweets is just taking the piss.

And I never, ever buy pick and mix.

Redhead17 · 20/02/2018 19:41

I saw a family last weekend with those big buckets of popcorn and loads of drinks

They charge enough for tickets take snacks

paxillin · 20/02/2018 19:45

I haven't seen £5 tickets for blockbusters in central London for 20 years.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 20/02/2018 19:46

I like to sneak in a disposable BBQ and whip up a few burgers.

or just sneak in some poundland sweets

I'm in the mood for a good picknmix now. I'm already in my pyjamas though. Sad.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 20/02/2018 19:47

I don't take snacks in but our cinema only costs £2.50or £3.50 depending which day so even with drink and popcorn its £6.50

darkriver198868 · 20/02/2018 19:48

My local cinema searches bags! It's a small independent cinema. (It also bans children under 3) YANBU however, when I do go its very rare so I do the whole pop corn and drink!

BelleandBeast · 20/02/2018 19:50

Wine, chocolate, quiet snacks..... ! the reason the sound is so loud in the cinema is to drown out the crunching and rustling!!!

LunchBoxPolice · 20/02/2018 19:51

I always take snacks in with me. Sometimes I'll buy ds the kids box with popcorn /sweets /drink in it as that's ok value, and I buy myself a coffee as my local Vue does a decent brew. Wouldn't buy the pick n mix, fizzy drinks etc the prices are crazy. Fortunately there is a Wilkinson over the road.

I hadn't had chance to eat last time we went, so I took a sandwich in from M&S. I felt like a daredevil sat there eating it, but apparently it is allowed Sad

minionsrule · 20/02/2018 19:53

We take our own snacks into Odeon or Vue but not to local independent cinema, their stuff isn't that expensive

UkuleleRose · 20/02/2018 19:55

I'm in the States and not allowed to take outside snacks into the movies, although everyone does, of course. It made national news when (however many) years ago Bill Gates got caught sneaking candy into the theater. I mean, if one of the richest men in the world thinks movie candy is too expensive, the rest of us don't stand a chance!

Years ago in college a friend sneaked in a pizza under her puffy coat. Vertically. We also smuggled in ice cream cones in my purse one time. Yep, I don't recommend either of those methods!

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 20/02/2018 19:57

YABU.

Vulpius · 20/02/2018 20:01

You are SO NBU. If I had to buy cinema-priced crap for my lot, I'd never go to the cinema (which is in any case a rarity). Go for it. Grin

AlpacaLypse · 20/02/2018 20:08

The nearest cinema to here (so still half an hour's drive to Big Town) had a 'no foodstuffs unless bought here' rule. It's amazing how much stuff you can hide in a handbag!

Hippadippadation · 20/02/2018 20:14

I always take snacks. A mini packet of haribo for the DC and some chocolate for me. And drinks! I don't know anyone who doesn't?

mari652 · 20/02/2018 20:16

Our local Curzon serves a very nice glass of wine - I was there once, at a daytime showing which wasn't busy, when the projector ( or whatevs) failed and they came around with a few bottles to keep us happy until it was fixed. My DH was very surprised how cheerful I was when I tottered home, considering the darkly depressing experimental film I seen.

Just don't have what someone behind us had in the cinema recently - seemed to be crunchy raw onion sandwiches. Eurgh - antisocial .

CapnHaddock · 20/02/2018 20:20

I take wine and sarnies

youngestisapsycho · 20/02/2018 20:22

Vue allow food, just not hot food or alcohol

rackhampearl · 20/02/2018 20:24

I'm excited now. The tickets are really cheap anyway cos it's like an older film and an half term deal. It will be my youngest first cinema trip and by the time the film finishes I'm dropping eldest at her friends party in the same venue thing (xscape) at least her half term won't be a total cop out with all the house moving and the 'just go play mummy is busy' Blush

Our local cinema is a small independent and they keep their prices low so I buy things for the DDs there (but have been known to sneak a can of G&T or two). If we go to the big pricey one in the next town I take our own snacks and drinks in, it's too expensive.

user1486076969 · 20/02/2018 20:40

Cineworld (free) with Tesco Clubcard vouchers + snacks from supermarket = a bargain cinema experience Grin

WineIsMyMainVice · 20/02/2018 20:42

I sometimes take a bottle of wine!!

morningsex · 20/02/2018 20:55

I buy pick and mix and popcorn for me but always take our own drinks

MoistCantaloupe · 20/02/2018 21:00

I love snacks. Especially sneaked-in-cinema-snacks.

I somehow don't manage without food for a couple of hours, so I need a constant supply.

Mybrows · 20/02/2018 21:03

My local cinema doesn't allow outside snacks in. I met a friend at the cinema a couple of years ago and they brought me 4 courgettes from their allotment and handed them over to me at the cinema in a polly bag. The cinema tried to stop me taking them in as they were foodstuffs, and I had to insist very hard that I wasn't going to eat four raw courgettes during the movie. True story.
