To sneak snacks into the cinema

I haven't been on MN in ages so don't know if this has been done recently. Just wondering if you think it's ok to take your own snacks to the cinema? I've never done it before but we are moving house next week so things are a little tight but I promised the girls a cinema trip during half term. Could do without the £10 for a popcorn and fruitshoot. They don't drink juice anyway so was thinking of taking their water bottles and stopping by the shop for a £1 bag of popcorn and some chocolate buttons, AIBU?

It’s a rare one - but we have been known to decant a nice ice cold g&t to sip - not at junior showtime or for the children but it did get us through the Ad Fab movie.

shetookshelter · 20/02/2018 19:14

My husband took me out for dinner for our wedding anniversary. He looks at the menu and asks me, "What are you thinking of having?"

.... 😐....

"I can somehow manage without food for a couple of hours", I said. His lack of control is so unattractive.

MacaroniPenguin · 20/02/2018 19:15

hairycoo ouch!

We tend to take stuff in mostly but as an occasional treat, nothing beats cinema salted popcorn.

thepatchworkcat · 20/02/2018 19:15

I’ve always taken my own snacks too!

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 20/02/2018 19:17

A thermos of coffee is a good idea.

I tried to discretely eat some chocolate covered Poppets last time I went. Unfortunately two had fallen into my lap and it was only when I exited the cinema into the light that I realised my crotch was smeared with melted brown stuff. Sad

youngestisapsycho · 20/02/2018 19:17

“I somehow manage without food for a couple of hours”

It’s not going without food for a couple of hours tho.... I don’t eat for hours befor a cinema trip so I can pig out on popcorn, chocolate and a huge fizzy tango slush!

youngestisapsycho · 20/02/2018 19:19

Years ago I went to see Titanic... the cinema floor was a continuous slope... I dropped a box of Maltesers and listened to them roll all the way to the front row!

SandlakeRd · 20/02/2018 19:20

I took DD and some friends yesterday. I bought some sweets and drinks and also some plastic bowels so I could divvy it all up before the film started!

SandlakeRd · 20/02/2018 19:21

NOT plastic bowels. That would be all sorts of wrong and quite rightly should not be allowed in a cinema to hold snacks Smile

brizzledrizzle · 20/02/2018 19:22

I'll stop off at the Indian takeaway before we go next time and get a couple of chicken tikkas to share.

Ragwort · 20/02/2018 19:22

I know I sound a miserable old git but the enjoyment of going to a cinema or theatre is totally ruined by other people eating noisy snacks - is it really necessary? I love eating and love snacking, but I also want to watch a film in peace.

happystrummer · 20/02/2018 19:23

Ive been known to take a huge plastic tub of home made popcorn and a blanket. Wouldnt dream of buying grub at the cinema

shetookshelter · 20/02/2018 19:23

Cinema probably isn't the best place for you then tbh

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 20/02/2018 19:23

Taking plastic bowels in? You've got guts Sandlake

Tinkerbec · 20/02/2018 19:23

Wasn’t there a documentary once where they tried it ?

I recall that cinema staff didn’t bat an eyelid and actually expected it.

gimmesomeapachepizza · 20/02/2018 19:26

I somehow manage without food for a couple of hours

You do? How? That's so amazing of you! Because the rest of us are obviously convinced we will die without the popcorn and maltesers and that is why we buy them.

Donkey.

LuckyAmy1986 · 20/02/2018 19:28

I make my own pick and mix at home by buying family bags of things in the supermarket then make them up into four separate Tupperware for myself, DH and two DC. Such fun!

Maryann1975 · 20/02/2018 19:29

We always take our own snacks. I was shocked at a fb friend who said they rarely go to the cinema because of the expense of it. She reckons it costs around £100 for a family of five to go. It cost my family of 5 about £30. Tickets are £5 each and then a couple of bags of chocolate buttons or haribo, bag of popcorn. Bargain.

I would much rather spend the difference on a proper meal out rather than a hot dog from the cinema shop.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 20/02/2018 19:30

I enjoy eating Revels at the cinema, eating them in the dark is like Russian Roulette!

shetookshelter · 20/02/2018 19:31

Tickets are £5 each

Maybe if you live in the Outer Hebrides. Or the 80s.

ghostyslovesheets · 20/02/2018 19:33

you don't need to sneak them in - non of the major chains ban cold food or drinks

Amanduh · 20/02/2018 19:37

Vue, Odeon and Cineworld all let you take your own food and drink in, (no hot food though or booze) always makes me laugh when I see people trying to hide it unnecessarily!

PattiStanger · 20/02/2018 19:37

Tickets at my local cinema are £5 and I live in neither of those places. The cinema does do spot checks to see if you're taking in food though

squoosh · 20/02/2018 19:37

I'm all for smuggling snacks in. It lends a certain frisson of subversion.

But people who scoff crunchy snacks or hot snacks with wafty smells are the worst.

CecilyBlue · 20/02/2018 19:37

The Odeon at the Trafford centre has a Croma pizza point within it. It sells 11" rectangular slice pizzas that they put into a rectangular box for you to take in to the film. They're delicious!
