People learning to read and then getting upset to discover Elmlea isn’t cream

AIBU to be annoyed by them???

It’s written on the packet. I can’t really understand why people are so annoyed. “I bought this cream substitute by accident and it was shit” seems like fairly average stuff. Getting angry about it seems odd; having consumed enough of it while not liking it that you feel aggrieved is just WTAF territory.

Whaaaaat? Elmlea isn’t cream? I’m beyond shocked!

Personally I don’t eat cream as have a massive issue with milk/yogurt (not morals just the texture) so I only buy if having guests for an ‘Adult dinner’ (ie not a takeaway) and I would just grab it! Oh well they have never complained but I am Shock

gimmesomeapachepizza · 20/02/2018 17:57

It lasts for ages even when opened Stateless.

is that because noone wants to eat it?

ShapelyBingoWing · 20/02/2018 17:58

SaskaTchewan, my comment is more about the fact that people are asserting that something being written on the packaging makes it obvious. As though checking every word on all packaging is the norm. It really isn't and I feel that it's really disingenuous to act as though anyone really believes it is.

FakeMews · 20/02/2018 17:58

regular milk and Cravendale next to each other
Is Cravendale not milk? Confused
Not that I care.

lookingforthecorkscrew · 20/02/2018 17:58

Never EVER make dauphinois potatoes with Elmlea. I'm still recovering 6 months later.

Never mind the Elmlea - I need to know more about this butter mixed with cream...

I'm not a fan of cream served by itself or with puddings but like it some savoury dishes. Mixed with butter sounds interesting.

TheoGB · 20/02/2018 18:01

SaucyJack Probably one of those really smelly ones??

people are asserting that something being written on the packaging makes it obvious.

in this case, it's not even "hidden" in a long list of ingredients at the back but clearly stated at the front, so yes, it is pretty obvious! And yes, I do have a look at the packaging when I buy something.

Anything labelled last longer when opened should give you a clue. Alternative to cream couldn't be clearer.

gimmesomeapachepizza · 20/02/2018 18:10

Well yeah, if you have eyes and can read. But really its what isn't written on the packaging that makes it so obvious: nowhere does it say that it IS cream!

raisedbyguineapigs · 20/02/2018 18:11

My MIL who is usually very posh buys this all the time. She knows it isn't cream. It tastes horrible and the ingredient list is enough to make me shudder, but she buys it in preference to real cream Hmm

BarbaraofSevillle · 20/02/2018 18:21

Well cream lasts at least a week, maybe more if you don't use it and well past the use by date, how long do people need things to last?

My parents only ever buy Elmlea, because it's "healthier". The fact it tastes like shit is an irrelevance to them Grin

Notso · 20/02/2018 18:37

It's packaged to look like cream with a strawberry on the front. Strawberries and cream are a well known partnership. They want you to think its cream.

It's like all the copycats that Aldi sells, butterpak etc. They want you to think it's Lurpak.

Grumpyoldblonde · 20/02/2018 18:44

It's packaged like cream and in the cream section with real cream. I thought it was just a brand name cream for years.
The more I write the word cream the weirder it looks though so I'll stop now.

SluttyButty · 20/02/2018 18:45

My dd would throw a hissy fit if I tried to pass off elmlea as cream. Proper double cream all the way here.

Arkengarthdale · 20/02/2018 18:47

It's all right but it's not cream. My MIL thinks it is and got really cross with me when I picked up the tub to see what it was made of. She snatched it back and shouted "it's cream!" and really didn't like me pointing out it wasn't. (She's a rubbish cook and I'm not Grin)

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/02/2018 18:49

Hello @TheoGB how nice to see you here again! How's the family? Little Data must have started school by now. Did her little brother get a science oven for Christmas? I think he's probably old enough for one now.

Must admit, I don't care for Elmlea.

GimbleInTheWabe · 20/02/2018 20:30

Whaaaaaaaaat?! I never knew this and i am now mortified. I've definitely even eaten it and not noticed a difference. And I thought I had such good taste....

TheFirstMrsDV · 20/02/2018 20:51

Nobody is hysterical, and its hardly a daily thread

I didn't say it was daily. Its frequent enough to be odd and tedious though.
There is a fair bit of hysterical language on this thread. About a food item.

themagicamulet · 20/02/2018 21:28

FIL bought Elmlea once at Christmas when he offered to pick up a few last minute bits and pieces. He was absolutely baffled when I told him it wasn't cream. I think lots of people don't realise. I've never understood the point of it - it's not cheaper like margarine/butter, and real cream keeps for ages anyway.

gimmesomeapachepizza · 20/02/2018 23:18

Seriously? Are you perhaps dreaming of elmlea threads on aibu because I've been around for a decade and this is the first one I've seen.

There hasn't been any hysterical language at all. Are you quite alright?

Buxbaum · 20/02/2018 23:25

It’s a bit like the way that Sunny Delight was put in the fridges next to the fresh juices to give the impression that it was another juice.

Sunny Delight is about 4% juice and doesn’t need to be refrigerated [boke]

safariboot · 21/02/2018 01:32

Or if soya milk was put next to regular milk. Which actually, I think some supermarkets put soya next to regular UHT milk.

This thread made me briefly consider getting some Elmlea. Then I looked and the ingredients include tree lard, I mean palm oil. So nope.
