Has anyone ever used them? I need carpet laid on my stairs and can't afford to buy carpet and pay for someone to lay it. I came across pay weekly carpets which means only paying £10 a week but aibu in thinking it seems to good to be true? Has anyone used them?

*Sorry as I know this will come out snippy but if you cant afford to buy carpets outright you can’t afford new carpets.

You said you’re not working - the last thing you need is to borrow.

New carpets are a nice to have not an essential.*

That's fine I see your point but I haven't had carpet in 3 years! But people keep commenting and I feel embarrassed inviting people in, so I've lived without them for a very long time.

Baby is also crawling now and the floor looks dirty that she's on (no matter how much I clean it obviously bare floor boards don't exactly look nice)

why is baby crawling on the stairs

Whitecovers · 20/02/2018 12:52

I had a look at pay weekly and it would have been £350 for my stairs and landing. I ended up been able to save and paying £260 upfront for a much better quality carpet, underlay and grippers.

I've been in my house 2 years and my stair carpet is the best purchase I've made, the whole house feels more like a home.

There's no harm in getting a quote and see how you feel from there. If they are in good shape you could also paint them? That's what I originally did but because they was in such bad condition they didn't look as good as they could.

BarbaraofSevillle · 20/02/2018 13:23

They might not overtly charge interest but they do because they charge more than you would pay if you just go to a normal shop, like the example above that is a total of £350 for something that is available elsewhere for £260 in one lump and is better quality.

Have a look around for offcuts and independent fitters. You don't need a big sheet of carpet to do the stairs. Ours got done with the offcuts from the living room and hallway.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/02/2018 13:30

A friend of mine painted her stairs white (and her hall floor too) - it looked really good, and it was easy to clean. Plus, when it started to look a bit worn, she could touch it up quickly - she didn't have to repaint it all.

BarbaraofSevillle · 20/02/2018 13:41

Ooh, that's a good idea SDTG. And if you're worried about them being slippery, you could buy something like this for much less than the cost of full carpetting:

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00MV1H78E/ref=s9_acsd_top_hd_bw_b3IxWYJ_c_x_w?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_p=e6f9919e-0213-5237-baed-2519d611837e&th=1&pf_rd_r=VSZPG7G0A5PNDQC8QKFW&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-3&pf_rd_t=101&tag=mumsnetforum-21&pf_rd_i=3028559031

I might look into this because the cats have ruined our stair carpeting so I'm loath to pay for replacement in case they do it again.

ThisLittleKitty · 20/02/2018 13:43

Baby crawls on landing not the stairs. It's quite a large area.

Could you not save up and pay for them?

I know you said you're unemployed at the moment so maybe worth looking for something part time (to work around child care) and saving a little each month? It would save you more money in the long run.

ThisLittleKitty · 20/02/2018 13:58

I'm not seeking work ATM. I may just go with them £350 seems reasonable to me I thought it would be alot more!

OP posts:
Cockmagic · 20/02/2018 16:21

I've had no problems with them op. You pay £50 deposit which come off your balance. Then £50 to fitter on the day.

I'm getting a 3rd this year. I work but would literally have to save a year for each one.

kmc1111 · 20/02/2018 16:24

If you’ve spent 3 years without the carpet and not managed to save up enough in that time you clearly really can’t afford to be getting into debt.

If you don’t like how they look bare just give them a cheap paint or oil, and then start putting $10 away each week for the carpet.

DuckBilledAardvark · 20/02/2018 16:29

If you can afford £10 a week it’s only going to take you six months to save up £260, you’ve been without for 3 years so why not wait another six months and stay out of debt? You can get big fluffy rugs from IKEA for about £40 if the landing is that big a problem.

ThisLittleKitty · 20/02/2018 16:31

I've not tried saving for them. I've had other things that were more important to buy (which I have done now so leaves me enough for the carpet) I can afford £10 a week easily I just don't want to wait 8/9 months.

OP posts:
gamerchick · 20/02/2018 16:33

And do you have the 100 quid upfront? You can get an offcut for that price?

But you’ve obviously made your mind up. Just remember you need to pay an upfront deposit and a chunk to pay the fitter on the day.

wheresmyphone · 20/02/2018 16:34

Please be careful with these type of outfits. They are not clear what you are actually paying for the carpet and what the interest cost is. They all hide it. None are transparent. Please tread carefully if you will pardon the pun!

wannabestressfree · 20/02/2018 16:37

I completely agree with you op- carpet is not the same as starving but we were given a housing association property last year and you can definitely hear those without carpet! It cost a fortune to do my house but I saw it as a necessity.
Hope it goes well. Just check reviews.

Ancientmummyofwooooos · 20/02/2018 21:13

I am most impressed, the carpets lovely and thick, as is the underlay, but may i suggest, as its £40 in advance, and you only want stairs doing, it may be worth looking at what you can get offcuts wise and youtubing how to do it yourself, as at the end of the day, its still 300 odd pounds to pay for a stair carpet xx yes would reccomend but bargain hunt first xx

ThisLittleKitty · 20/02/2018 21:40

I have already got carpet for dds room as an off cut was less than £50 as it happens! (Box room) but had it about 3 weeks and haven't had the time/energy to lay it yet, I wouldn't be able to lay stair carpet. Glad it turned out nice thanks for getting back to me.

Ancientmummyofwooooos · 20/02/2018 22:03

No worries, with their being no interest, its not really any different to putting ten pounds a week away to save for carpet- only you get them before you finish. I tried to post pictures earlier but was taking so long

I would suggest checking Carpetright for remnants. They fitted a bedroom out for less than £100 all in.

Avasarala · 20/02/2018 23:24

How have you had no carpet for 3 years but have a new baby (well, baby starting to crawl). Didn't you think about making the house comfortable and more liveable before planning a 4th child?
Does your partner have any spare cash to put towards It?

ThisLittleKitty · 20/02/2018 23:40

Gosh haha not even gonna rise to that comment. No carpet is hardly a big deal it's not like I said I got no food in the fridge! It's more that it doesn't look nice rather than I'm in desperate need.

OP posts:
ThisLittleKitty · 20/02/2018 23:44

Oh the carpet looks really good ancient! I think I will definitely contact them.

Carpet right is good but I remember being quoted around the same price when I went there for stair carpets (was a while ago but think it was £300 plus £30
Delivery charge.)
