Has anyone ever used them? I need carpet laid on my stairs and can't afford to buy carpet and pay for someone to lay it. I came across pay weekly carpets which means only paying £10 a week but aibu in thinking it seems to good to be true? Has anyone used them?

Not personally but I know people that have. The quality is usually basic but perfectly adequate. You would pay more than if you paid up front but that's the same for any type of credit.
If you can I would get an interest free credit card and buy outright. If that's not possible then I would use the weekly carpet company.

MyDcAreMarvel · 19/02/2018 23:07

Sorry I meant pay weekly carpet companies in general. There are hundreds of companies that offer this. Try your local Facebook pages.

mumgointhroughtorture · 19/02/2018 23:07

They have a Facebook group . They come highly recommended ... If you have a local rep who actually gets back to you , the communication seems hit and miss .

FissionChips · 19/02/2018 23:08

Stair carpet treads are a much cheaper alternative, around £40 for a set.

Apontypandypioneer · 19/02/2018 23:12

I've never heard of them but no interest and no credit check. All seems a bit too good to be true. What do they do if people don't pay? Come and take the carpet? Definitely Google and get some reviews or hopefully someone here will have experience.
I think if I was in your situation I would try and use an interest free credit card to go to a big name store or a local one who can do fitting etc. At least that way your assured of the quality of what you're getting.

ThisLittleKitty · 19/02/2018 23:26

I'm not working ATM so wouldn't be able to get a credit card. I just heard about them on a Facebook budgetting page but I thought they probably charge a fortune for the carpets. Just looked at the carpet treads but with 4 kids can imagine them looking very messy very quickly.

Depends on who it is. We have 2 local ones. One is ok, bit hit or miss about getting the carpet to the walls and the other one takes deposit and then tells you about the cost of the fitter. If you change your mind at that point, you lose what you’ve just given them.

Very expensive for the carpet you get. You’re better off saving that tenner a week and buying an off cut or end of roll.

WishingOnABar · 19/02/2018 23:30

I looked into them and realised the carpet would cost a minimum of 400 total, even though the same area with fitting would have cost 260 from a standard carpet place if I’d had the cash upfront

I think you will pay a premium for the convenience of their credit, but if you can put aside the £40 deposit now and save £10 a week for a while you might get enough to buy outright? It depends on the urgency

Katescurios · 19/02/2018 23:33

You need approx a 4m x 2m piece of carpet for straight stairs,a bit more if you have a stairwell that bends.

Why not look for a remnant piece you can get an idea of price here www.flooringsuperstore.com/sale/carpet-remnants local small carpet shops will be your cheapest bet.

Then underlay and carpet grip if you don't have that down already.

The carpet store will probably be able to fit for a low price too.

YouGotRedOnYou · 19/02/2018 23:33

Where are you op? I have a roll of navy blue/grey/white striped off cut. More than enough for stairs and landing.

ThisLittleKitty · 19/02/2018 23:34

Would like it fairly soon as I feel having no carpet on my stairs makes the house look messy so saving would take ages. Wouldn't want to pay £400 though but I guess that's the thing with paying weekly you end up paying more.

We're in a tight spot and went with pay weekly for hall, stairs and landing. Its £340 for us, they're being fitted tomorrow, carpet top landing/hall and stairs then vinyl in downstairs hall, underlay and carpet gripper rods and doorway carpet grippers included in the price. Paying fitters 70 tomorrow (due to be fitted tomorrow) and overall its a little more expensive than i would have liked but at 10 pounds a week, or more if you find yourself able to pay it off quicker, i am not complaining. Will let you know what i think of quality after fitting tomorrow.

ThisLittleKitty · 19/02/2018 23:49

That would be great if you could let me know how it goes ancient. I only have the stairs and landing so hopefully will be slightly cheaper. The stairs are curved not straight. Thanks for the offer yougot I am in london.

I know someone who used a weekly firm.
If she stuck to her payment schedule the total would be £620 and to buy similar outright would be £400 so a big %50 APR but not outrageous.

HOWEVER please please check the paperwork because she missed payments and ended up paying penalties.

YouGotRedOnYou · 19/02/2018 23:55

I'm in Manchester. Dh wouldve brought it and fitted it if you were closer. In fact ask on fb if anyone has any off cuts they want rid of. I got lino for my kitchen that way. I'm happy to pay it forward and have done a few times. Someone might be happy to do that rather than chucking it.

Cockmagic · 19/02/2018 23:56

I've had 2 carpets from pay weekly.

Never paid interest!

I'd recommend them, lovely job and really high quality carpets.

newmumwithquestions · 19/02/2018 23:58

Sorry as I know this will come out snippy but if you cant afford to buy carpets outright you can’t afford new carpets.

You said you’re not working - the last thing you need is to borrow.

New carpets are a nice to have not an essential.

FannyWisdom · 20/02/2018 00:13

On carpets I sort of disagree Newmum especially when you are starting out.
Babies learning to crawl and toddle can be calamitous enough.
Plus if you have adjoining neighbours it's a bit of a essential.
Not saying it should be at the expense of food but it falls into the fridge and cooker category as musts imo.

Talkingfrog · 20/02/2018 00:15

Are you with a credit union? If you save for a few months, you may then be able to get a loan with them to buy a suitable size remnant from a local shop that they could then fit.
The credit union will probably be a lower interest rate than the mark up the pay weekly carpet people add on.
It also gives the added benefit of you being on their books. They do a Christmas savings scheme too, which could be useful with children.

spugzbunny · 20/02/2018 00:22

Nobody needs carpets. It's not like food or running water! This is how people end up swimming in debt.

FannyWisdom · 20/02/2018 00:41

We don't need shoes either but I bet if you saw the neighbours kids running barefoot you wouldn't immediately think thrifty.

It's not frivolous it's fairly basic.

FireCrotch · 20/02/2018 00:42

I agree Spudz but it's so tempting to get into debt when there's no way of affording stuff otherwise. I've been there and managed to haul myself out (with Stepchange s expert and non judgemental help). I like reds idea. There are fb pages dedicated to this kind of thing. I got a 3 seater leather sofa a few Christmases back when we literally had nothing but our backsides to sit on. I very nearly went to DFS. But saw the fb page in time. Now I pass on stuff too.

FireCrotch · 20/02/2018 00:46

Oh and I should probably acknowledge that op might be perfectly fine with any arrangement she makes and wants to choose her carpet and not what someone has to spare. I'm sorry if I came across as preachy or judgy op. I'm not. Just trying to be helpful. Flowers
