To think breakfast is going to be impossible?

I've decided to try and get a handle on my carb and alcohol intake. I'm not overweight particularly but I'm wobbly, tired and my skin looks like crap. I don't have a sweet tooth but bloody love bread, crisps, pastry and potatoes.

I've been doing a bit of planning/research. I don't want to shell out ££££s for a specific "plan" but just want to make adaptations to what I do now (so foregoing bacon filled brioche and the gorgeous Pret ham cheese and bacon croissants that I'm currently addicted to. Blush ) generally reducing carbs and upping the amount of veg, lean protein and good fats.

I've gathered I should eat low carb (approx 50g a day?) unless I've worked out and then I can have a higher carb meal within a couple of hours of a workout In the week I can only work out in the evening so can have a few carbs with dinner if I go low/no carb for breakfast and lunch....

Therein lies the rub. What the hell can I have for breakfast?

I leave the house at 7am for work so it has to be something very quick that I can eat at home or prepped the night before to take to work. I got all excited about overnight oats until I realised they are very carby indeed. As is my other go to of fruit and yoghurt.

Eggs are a bit tricky as I only like yolk and white combined so scrambled or frittata or omelette ok but not a hard boiled egg. Realistically I'm not going to be whipping out a frying pan at 6am to make scrambled eggs and spinach or pancakes etc.

I could wait until I get to work and buy something but this is what I do now and I need to break the cycle of buying something I shouldn't.

Any ideas oh wise low carbing mumsnetters?

Sorry, over the croissant excitement.

You could make egg mayo in advance and have with bacon strips, parsley and tomatoes? Should be pretty nutritious and filling.

I know it’s lazy but when I’m low carbing I often grab a pot of sandwich filler from Waitrose or similar and eat that if I’m out and need something fast. The chicken or egg ones are usually really low in carbs and really filling.

goodbyeeee · 18/02/2018 19:28

I have had a few mitten...... there is ay least one Pret in London that DEFINITELY still has them. Given the clear grease content I was quite surprised to find they're nowhere near as calorific as the Pret Bacon Brioche which, while tasty, is disappointingly small..... I also have to walk past a Waitrose. I blame their addictive and free coffee for my equally bad Waitrose crusty bacon con addiction. I need to buy something to get my free coffee and the bacon cobs just cry out to me...

There's no reason why you should eat anything different at breakfast! That idea comes from Mr Kellogg's et al.

Why not just have leftovers from dinner the night before?

If you check out the Bootcamp recipe thread (the main one, not the specific ones), at the end you'll find a really lovely recipe for low carb granola, which you could have with Greek yoghurt.

Jux · 18/02/2018 19:31

What about avocado and banana? I used to make a smoothie of avo+banana with a bit of milk (sometimes some whey powder too). It was delicious - hard to stop eating it!

Is that very carby?

goodbyeeee · 18/02/2018 19:33

I think bananas are quite carby and I'm not a fan but smoothie might work as I guess I could take it to work in a travel mug?

OP posts:
elisenbrunnen · 18/02/2018 19:35

Banana is NOT low-carb!

No fruits are - berries are the lowest, but if you want to Lowcarb, you need to get vitamins and minerals and fibre etc from veg.

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 18/02/2018 19:42

I stick to 12/14000 calories a day and less, tomorrows meal plan is...

B - protein shake, 2 boiled eggs and 200g of spinach.

L - Skiness white bean garlic and rosemary mash, salmon and asparagus.

T - lentil, bean and mushroom curry with cauli rice.

S- Figs and goats cheese, watermelon and pineapple, and an apple

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 18/02/2018 19:43

Hundred not thousand...

Gatehouse77 · 18/02/2018 19:49

Slight variation on the egg muffin theme.

Line the muffin tin with a rasher of bacon, crack an egg into it. Bake for 10 minutes. Delicious hot or cold.
You can also add cheese - feta, cheddar, etc. - on top or some herbs.

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 18/02/2018 19:49

I find the UK had a very cardboard concept of breakfast, it’s all cereals, toast, or something with carbs etc...

Most other countries don’t have this.

Turkey for me has the best breakfast, it’s fresh, vibrant and filling, it’s fresh tomatoes, cucumber, menemen, (omelette of sorts) mixed olives, feta, borek, (filled pastry)

It’s delicious and also nutritious.

how do you make the white bean/garlic/rosemary mash? that sounds nice. I haven't yet found any sort of substitute for rice/pasta/pots accompaniment to meat that I like.

rookiemere · 18/02/2018 19:53

I made Joe Wicks egg and chorizo muffins today and am planning to bring in a couple for breakfast at work tomorrow. recipe is:
5 eggs
60g chorizo chopped and fried
half a grated courgette
40g chopped mozzarella
some spinach leaves
2 chopped spring onions
salt & pepper

Mix it all well together and bake for 25 mins in the oven. My top tip is use muffin cases or you'll be spending a long time washing the pan ( bitter experience). Tasted quite nice fresh today - will see what they're like tomorrow morning

goose1964 · 18/02/2018 20:00

Chicken sausages, you could cook them the night before and have either as a nibble or with eggs or bacon or tomato

applespearsbears · 18/02/2018 20:04

Lean protein is your friend, I pre cook quorn chicken burger or a turkey steak, reheat 10 secs in microwave and add cottage cheese with a handful of spinach and tomatoes. Keeps me going all morning.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/02/2018 20:15

If you have a nutribullet, fill the canister with 50g frozen berries, 250ml almond milk, and then add either a scoop of yogurt (full fat) or some peanut butter, or half an avocado. I also add a scoop of maca powder for fibre. Then keep it in the fridge, blitz it as you’re leaving and drink it in the car. Such an easy and delicious brekkie, and it keeps you full because of all the fat/ fibre in it.

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 18/02/2018 20:18

Boil some white beans, cauliflowers and white turnip (make sure you have more beans) remove skin from beans, mke sure you add salt to the water. You can also boil the beans and veg in vegetable stock (more calories however)

Shallow fry garlic, shallots, rosemary and some of the beans, remove the rosemary sticks, and add to the veg and bean mix, I then mash mine through my rice machine.

Add salt and pepper and grate some fresh lemon zest on top.

Cherrycokewinning · 18/02/2018 21:49

Mmmm turkish breakfast sounds yum

Groovee · 18/02/2018 21:55

@goodbyeeee nah I chuck it all in the oven in the muffin tray to cook. I also have an omelette maker which is good for doing the same thing in 10 mins

PickleFish · 18/02/2018 22:29

thanks, HaudYerWheest. I don't think I even know what white beans are - are they tinned? dried? What do you have to do with them first before you boil them? How long? How do you remove skin from beans?!

I don't cook much, and definitely not pulses or things like that, so I need to learn!

I didn't know turnips came in varieties...

I don't have a ricer, but I do have a potato masher.

It sounds nice. Mainly because of the garlic!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 18/02/2018 22:36

I don't low-carb but a regular breakfast for me is a few slices of cheese, a slice of decent ham and a sliced tomato.

goodbyeeee · 19/02/2018 10:01

So this morning DP used up all the eggs on the DCs and the fridge is pretty bare until shipping delivery tomorrow so I went with greek yoghurt and a few berries with a mere sprinkling of nutty museli.

I've set up My Fitness Pal and it says I need 75g of carbs acday. Does that sound a lot?

I make these (I mess around with them for flavour) but they are lovely. If you want them warm, out in the oven and put one/2 in then give it 10 mins. 5 if you preheat.

I have Fage zero percent yoghurt every day as I walk to station and eat with a plastic spoon then throw away before I get on the train.
