To think breakfast is going to be impossible?

I've decided to try and get a handle on my carb and alcohol intake. I'm not overweight particularly but I'm wobbly, tired and my skin looks like crap. I don't have a sweet tooth but bloody love bread, crisps, pastry and potatoes.

I've been doing a bit of planning/research. I don't want to shell out ££££s for a specific "plan" but just want to make adaptations to what I do now (so foregoing bacon filled brioche and the gorgeous Pret ham cheese and bacon croissants that I'm currently addicted to. Blush ) generally reducing carbs and upping the amount of veg, lean protein and good fats.

I've gathered I should eat low carb (approx 50g a day?) unless I've worked out and then I can have a higher carb meal within a couple of hours of a workout In the week I can only work out in the evening so can have a few carbs with dinner if I go low/no carb for breakfast and lunch....

Therein lies the rub. What the hell can I have for breakfast?

I leave the house at 7am for work so it has to be something very quick that I can eat at home or prepped the night before to take to work. I got all excited about overnight oats until I realised they are very carby indeed. As is my other go to of fruit and yoghurt.

Eggs are a bit tricky as I only like yolk and white combined so scrambled or frittata or omelette ok but not a hard boiled egg. Realistically I'm not going to be whipping out a frying pan at 6am to make scrambled eggs and spinach or pancakes etc.

I could wait until I get to work and buy something but this is what I do now and I need to break the cycle of buying something I shouldn't.

Any ideas oh wise low carbing mumsnetters?

Yoghurt bowl. I would reccomend grating up and apple and mixing with yoghurt, seeds/crushed nuts and cinnamon (helps you loose weight by controlling blood sugar levels apoarebtly) and topping with berries/pomegranate/passion fruit. Stick in on the fridge overnight (or more) and then just eat it quickly.

tillytrotter1 · 18/02/2018 18:41

Breakfast is the meal which I find the most difficult to cut down the carbs, I don't like porridge, or anything oaty nor do I like yoghurt, I've tried all kinds but still can't eat it. That leaves eggs which I often have, we go through loads, but it needs a slice of toast, or a corn based cereal.
My all time favourite though is strawberries, cantaloupe melon and black forest ham, Lidl, with roughly crushed black pepper and a splash of balsamic vinegar, with a slice of toast.

JaneEyre70 · 18/02/2018 18:41

I either have full fat greek yogurt with some protein powder sprinkled on top with some berries and nuts, or I make a protein shake. Go for the better quality stuff like Protein Works meal replacement extreme or Purition shakes that are all low carb and low fat. I often make half water/half almond milk and throw a few frozen berries in for texture and they keep you going for hours. I can't be arsed with cooking first thing lol.

QuestionableMouse · 18/02/2018 18:42

I've seen frozen omelettes. No idea what they're like but you could probably nuke them at work.

Or do a bunch of hard boiled eggs and then chop them up, mixing with a spread of your choice?

Rshard · 18/02/2018 18:42

Don’t worry about joining in at all goodbyeee, loads of people have joined up since we started. It’s not particularly hard core but you do need to commit to it, but it really does work. Lots of people have lost lots of weight. I’ve lost 25 on the last bootcamp and this one so far. There’s always support, motivation and advice. Benefits beyond weight loss include sleeping better, clearer skin - I love it

FindoGask · 18/02/2018 18:44

I don't do low carb: I love pasta and bread, but I did lose the best part of two stone recently by cutting out alcohol and snacks, and watching portion sizes, basically. I have a protein shake for breakfast because I do weightlifting in the early mornings so I need something straight after. Otherwise I probably wouldn't bother with breakfast at all, there's no truth to the myth that you 'need' breakfast (unless you are actually hungry in the mornings - no point being miserable!)

goodbyeeee · 18/02/2018 18:47

Thanks rshard I'll take another look. I don't really want to lose weight (maybe 1/2 stone) but I do want to feel and look better. The skin may be more down to wine habit though....

Maybe be try making scrambled eggs one morning. I know they seem a faff but honestly they are so quick. I just put the saucepan on the heat, add a knob of butter, break the eggs straight into the pan and stir. Ready in probably around 90 seconds. And yummy!

Qvar · 18/02/2018 18:52

Cook off a bag of %5 sausages and have a couple every morning.

You're struggoing for breakfast ideas because you're stuck in the mindset that breakfast should be cereals, toast or eggs/

It's fine to just eat a piece of meat!

2kidsnopets · 18/02/2018 18:53

Quark isa nice but not sure on carb content.

It's bland so you can make it sweet (add berries, or a spoon of cacao and a tiny bit of sweetner) or savoury, eg with paprika, or Italian herbs and tomatoes and ham.

You could make a superthin omelette the night before then use it like a tortilla wrap filled with eg ham and cheese.

gladyoucame · 18/02/2018 18:53

Mini egg muffins in the oven - basically omelettes cooked in muffin tray. Grease muffin tray put bits of veg/bacon/cheese in. Mix eggs in jus top each muffin hole up with egg bake in oven. Can either eat cold or warm in oven. Last a few days in the fridge

trinity0097 · 18/02/2018 18:54

Protein nut bar (nature valley do chocolate or caramel ones), either as is, or chopped with chocolate sauce - a square dark chocolate, sweetener, double cream and butter, melted together and poured over the top - yum!

Atkins shakes are also good.

gladyoucame · 18/02/2018 18:54

Looks like mini egg muffins are popular here. I have them for lunch as I'm not a breakfast fan

Oldieandgoldie · 18/02/2018 18:57

Egg muffins freeze too.

SamHeughansCephalicVeins · 18/02/2018 19:03

There are lots of lovely recipes for chia pudding, which is made in advance, so very quick & easy in the morning

Also cloud bread/rolls (zero carbs or nearly I think?) - made in with various LC toppings.

Maybe not as low carb as you need? - but chopped apple with Greek probiotic yoghurt & nuts (or peanut butter).

WineAndTiramisu · 18/02/2018 19:04

Protein shake was the only thing I found that kept me full until lunch, either protein powder with milk or whizzed up with frozen fruit as well. Weekends were then omelettes etc when I had more time

BrimFire · 18/02/2018 19:08

Can you not skip breakfast and have something more substainal later in the morning? I skip breakfast have a tasty salad with cheese and meat/ salmon for brunch and then a snack of nuts or humous in the afternoon and dinner in the evening.
I've got the routine going and it helps not to " think" about food too much.

ChillychickenMum · 18/02/2018 19:11

Crust less quiche, that I call pastry less quiche, I make individual ones in my silicon muffin “tins” . So I make 12 at a time. They are really popular, and I struggle to get any myself 😀
They are delicious cold, straight from the fridge and you can add all sorts of fillings. I usually use bacon and onion. But broccoli is surprisingly lovely in them.

ChillychickenMum · 18/02/2018 19:12

Oh sorry, I see other people do them too. Use silicon, they are so easy to get out

Basseting · 18/02/2018 19:14

palcemarking for ideas :)

Sparrowlegs248 · 18/02/2018 19:17

I'm doing the keto diet. Full fat Greek yogurt, honadequate granola, few raspberries.

Egg muffins. Scrambled eggs.

troodiedoo · 18/02/2018 19:21

Frozen omelettes are not too bad. But scrambled egg takes two mins in micro. Protein shake made with almond milk and a splash of cream.
Cottage cheese rolled up with slice of ham, or my favourite beef, but that's not breakfasty enough for some.

mittensofsteel · 18/02/2018 19:21

Goodbyee- total derailment but the ham, cheese and bacon croissants from Pret - have you had one in the last month? Sounds tragic but my fussy eater son LOVES them but we haven’t seen them for sale for AGES in the London stores but it sounds like they might still be in stock - somewhere!

Woo hoo!

goodbyeeee · 18/02/2018 19:23

So many good ideas thank you. In the week I will probably do a mix of egg based pre cooked things and yogurt/small amount of fruit/ nuts/ chia type things. At weekends can splash out a bit with pancakes or more substantial brunches.

BrunoJenkinsProblem · 18/02/2018 19:25

Try scrambled eggs too, you’d be surprised how quickly they can be rustled up. I have them every morning, with bacon too if I have too but if not they take 5 mins tops.
