To think breakfast is going to be impossible?

I've decided to try and get a handle on my carb and alcohol intake. I'm not overweight particularly but I'm wobbly, tired and my skin looks like crap. I don't have a sweet tooth but bloody love bread, crisps, pastry and potatoes.

I've been doing a bit of planning/research. I don't want to shell out ££££s for a specific "plan" but just want to make adaptations to what I do now (so foregoing bacon filled brioche and the gorgeous Pret ham cheese and bacon croissants that I'm currently addicted to. Blush ) generally reducing carbs and upping the amount of veg, lean protein and good fats.

I've gathered I should eat low carb (approx 50g a day?) unless I've worked out and then I can have a higher carb meal within a couple of hours of a workout In the week I can only work out in the evening so can have a few carbs with dinner if I go low/no carb for breakfast and lunch....

Therein lies the rub. What the hell can I have for breakfast?

I leave the house at 7am for work so it has to be something very quick that I can eat at home or prepped the night before to take to work. I got all excited about overnight oats until I realised they are very carby indeed. As is my other go to of fruit and yoghurt.

Eggs are a bit tricky as I only like yolk and white combined so scrambled or frittata or omelette ok but not a hard boiled egg. Realistically I'm not going to be whipping out a frying pan at 6am to make scrambled eggs and spinach or pancakes etc.

I could wait until I get to work and buy something but this is what I do now and I need to break the cycle of buying something I shouldn't.

Any ideas oh wise low carbing mumsnetters?

Great suggestions for alternatives from other posters, but if you don’t find them appealing I agree with ELR - better to have the overnight oats than give up and go back to pastries.

Fannyfanakerpants · 18/02/2018 18:11

Another vote for fullfat yogurt, berries, seeds and nuts. If I'm organised I make paleo granola or coconut flour muffins. At the weekend, celeriac rostis, eggs and smoked salmon goes down well with everyone.

goodbyeeee · 18/02/2018 18:11

I'm writing all these down....

Loving the grilled mushrooms idea.

What's a protein roll? Do Tesco or Aldi do them (no Lidl here).

I love avocado but sadly can't abide bananas....

Egg 'muffins' are a great idea, you can do up different ones and store in the fridge and pop in the micro to heat up.

Groovee · 18/02/2018 18:12

I make egg muffins and fill them with things like ham, spring onion, tomatoes, spinach, mushrooms.

I mix 4 eggs with some black pepper add the filling to a silicone muffin tray. Then pour the eggs over and bake for 25 mins. Let them cool then pop in the fridge. It makes about 6 which fills me right up.

merry it's going to take all my willpower to walk past Pret without diving in for one....

Egg muffins sound good and like they could take a lot of cheese...I love cheese... (can you tell I love food rather a lot...Grin)

Do the overnight oats but use chai seeds instead of the oats... pinterest the recipe, there are loads.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 18/02/2018 18:17

Philadelphia and smoked salmon.
(This is in no way me place marking this thread for ideas Grin)

KatharinaRosalie · 18/02/2018 18:18

Banana really isn't low carb

elisenbrunnen · 18/02/2018 18:19

I've been lowcarbing for years, and my breakfast during the week is greek yoghurt. I have a pack of frozen berries in the freezer - half a minute in the microwave, top with yoghurt and some nuts f you like.

Lidl/Aldi do a litre paintpot sized one Grin which is totally delicious, thick and creamy. And being full fat means it keeps me going until lunch, easily.

Check out @BIWI low carb bootcamp on the lowcarb threads . Loads of recipes and ideas on there.

demirose87 · 18/02/2018 18:19

I'm doing Slimming World. I have either 2 Alpen Light Bars and fruit or yogurt when I'm in a rush and if I have a bit more time it's usually something with eggs and tinned tomatoes.

Birdsgottafly · 18/02/2018 18:20

I wouldn't get too hung up on reducing fruit/veg that contain carbs, there isn't any scientific research that shows that its a good thing to to.

goodbyeeee · 18/02/2018 18:21

Stupid question.. .for the muffins do you cook the filling first?

OP posts:
KennDodd · 18/02/2018 18:22

Can you just skip breakfast?

Rshard · 18/02/2018 18:27

Come over to the low carb boot camp thread. We’re about to start week 7 but you can jump in at any point! Lots of advice and motivation. Oats are a no no on a low carb woe as are bananas.

goodbyeeee · 18/02/2018 18:28

Problem is Ken that I have a 90 minute commute so if I don't eat before I leave home I'm starving by the time I arrive and hallucinating about the bacon rolls and croissants ....

Microwaveable porridge (2-3 min) topped with fresh fruit?

Allthewaves · 18/02/2018 18:32

Cutting out sugar and refined carbs (plus potatoes) is a good way of losing weight. I also don't eat carbs in my evening meal. So I still have oats for breakfast (as stops constipation). I also don't count any veg (except potatoes as carb).

WaxOnFeckOff · 18/02/2018 18:33

We do a quick egg omelette thing in the microwave - takes 1 minute :)

Spray inside a cup with one cal spray. add an egg and beat, add a spot of milk and a few shavings of cheese if you are allowed. stir and then microwave full power for 1 minute - Season & serve on some lean ham/bacon instead of bread. Could also serve it on a big flat grilled mushroom.

We are cutting calories not low carbing so we have it on a toasted thin bagel.

I've got older teens so trying to keep some familiar meals so they don't feel deprived. We've had these a couple of times - not sure if they count as low carb?

I’m trying to cut down in just the way you describe op & I’m having a protein shake for breakfast & then soup for lunch.
I’m using WelleCo protein powder with kefir or unsweetened soy milk, milled chia seeds & then whatever fruit/veg the fridge can offer. Some days are more successful/tasty than others! I didn’t buy an expensive nutri bullet but got a reasonably priced ‘NutriNinja’ in the January sales.

Mummug · 18/02/2018 18:37

Here's my low carb breakfasts:
-Half Avacado stuffed with a tuna and organic mayo &spring onion mix or cream cheese & smoked salmon or egg mayo
-Butternut squash or courgette slices cooked in oven with pepperoni, onion, mushrooms, cheese (can be kept chilled and heated up or eat cold)
-Joe Wick does fab egg and pepperoni muffins (with spinach). Easy to batch cook and heat as you go
-Srambled eggs and smoked salmon
-Lower carb bread with cream cheese & smoked salmon; cheese & ham, BLT, egg mayo; tuna mayo, etc
-Boiled eggs

Love the crustless quiche; large mushroom and heated up frozen berries on full fat yoghurt. Thank you MN's for all these great ideasSmile

goodbyeeee · 18/02/2018 18:38

I had a quick look at the bootcamp rshard but was worried it was already well underway and it looked quite hard-core ( don't mean that rudely!). I'm worried if I get too prescriptive I'll just give up. Sad

Honestly, it takes less time to scramble an egg than it does to make a piece of toast, and less time to eat it Grin.

Loving the egg muffin ideas here though.

ifanciedanamechange · 18/02/2018 18:39

2 bananas, 2 eggs blitzed in food processor and cooked like an omelette, once cooked add fruit and yogurt. Very filling.
