To wonder why Tescos wouldn't sell me a carrot?

To be clear: it wasn't a big deal, I just shrugged and (bravely) survived.

I tried to buy a carrot. It came from a loose produce shelf. Last one which I thought was a bit odd. I didn't bother weighing it myself because there was a queue at the scales. Went to pay expecting the cashier to weigh it. She moaned a bit about me not putting a label on it and moaned even more when I said I didn't need a bag for it. She was obviously new as she didn't know how to put it through the till so she called a manager over. The manager said something I didn't hear and went off to the veg section. He came back and said because there wasn't a label on the carrot shelf he couldn't sell me it?

I've had it before when a shop has refused to sell me a cucumber because it was prepacked but the label had come off. I sort of see why with that (although it's stupid) but why with a lose carrot?

By the way I am over 18 and have no previous veg related offences.

Sexnotgender I am curly haired too. I find using a wide toothed comb and products designed for afro hair helps a little with the frizzies.

So, do carrots have to go two by two to get into the ark?

Laziness pure and simple. I’ve bought single carrots in Tesco on many occasions both instore and online. I agree with others who say that the manager could have gone to print of a label himself. If the manager can’t find a price for an item he’s a pretty useless manager. I would complain to head office. You might even get a free bag of carrots for your trouble.

The PP who mentioned the cost of a single carrot had me flabbergasted. Why on earth are carrots so expensive these days? They cheaper than that at my local organic greengrocer

Tommorow

Depends on whether they count as a clean vegetable or not LOL. If a clean veg, then it is 7 by 7 into the ark

Where are you in the country? I have carrots I could send you?
I'm afraid I WILL only send them in pairs though, having read the thread.

Last time I bought a single carrot was Christmas Eve, I had already done food shopping but decided one more carrot would be required. The check out assistant commented that she always forgot Rudolf's carrot too, which prompted me to go back round to buy another lonely 'more carrot shaped' carrot

Ah, poor carrot-no one could be bothered to weigh it so that Op could buy itSad

Why does a carrot even need a label?!? Ridiculous. And for the record, I’ve bought single carrots from Tesco many a time without any raising of eyebrows. That store needs to get a grip.

Onan forged a grip and there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

I think they can give away food, but can't SELL it unless they're sure the price is correct, or they could get into trouble with trading standards

My Sainsbury’s delivery came yesterday and in it was one carrot 11p. I meant to order one bag. I did say to DH that Tesco won’t sell one banana so not sure why Sainsbury’s would. They also substituted ginger for garlic. I’m still trying to work that one out.

I read a story a while ago about a self checkout scam with mushrooms. I think there was a man who had worked out that an individual mushroom weighed so little that it was rounded down to 0 pence. He was repeatedly buying them one at a time. Perhaps they thought you were in cahoots with him.

Ocado won't sell you a single carrot either. It's a bag full or nothing.

Tesco delivery were shit but I could get a single carrot delivered at least. Maybe that's the secret to lone carrot buying at Tesco! - do it online.

Do you believe the carrot to be still offered for sale? I might want it for myself. Which branch?

I bought a single banana in Sainsbury's last week; no problem. Before any rude comments, it was to make banana custard.

No, that'd be silly, but its like with guinea pigs, you can't keep just one carrot, it'll be sad. You may possibly be able to pair it with a lone parsnip, if they get along, but you'll have to keep an eye on them at first in case they fight.
On no account put your lone carrot in with a potato...they will misbehave in unspeakable ways...thats what leads to all this suggestively shaped vegetables you used to see on 'thats life'.

I think they can give away food, but can't SELL it unless they're sure the price is correct, or they could get into trouble with trading standards

This - the fine from trading standards is huge if they do that so no shelf-edge label = product not available for sale. In practice, if trading standards come in and find a product available for sale without a shelf-edge label then it's usual for them to give you time to put it right.

In retail support any IT problem which stops or causes problems with shelf-edge labels is fairly high priority.

Any prizes for guessing what job I do?
