To wonder why Tescos wouldn't sell me a carrot?

To be clear: it wasn't a big deal, I just shrugged and (bravely) survived.

I tried to buy a carrot. It came from a loose produce shelf. Last one which I thought was a bit odd. I didn't bother weighing it myself because there was a queue at the scales. Went to pay expecting the cashier to weigh it. She moaned a bit about me not putting a label on it and moaned even more when I said I didn't need a bag for it. She was obviously new as she didn't know how to put it through the till so she called a manager over. The manager said something I didn't hear and went off to the veg section. He came back and said because there wasn't a label on the carrot shelf he couldn't sell me it?

I've had it before when a shop has refused to sell me a cucumber because it was prepacked but the label had come off. I sort of see why with that (although it's stupid) but why with a lose carrot?

By the way I am over 18 and have no previous veg related offences.

I think if you had said in a loud voice that it was to be cooked and eaten and not for masturbation they would have been embarrassed enough to sell it to you.

Self-IDing man on Fridays and Tesco single carrot selling expert here.

Happy to confirm something that no-one really wanted to know in the first place, in terribly precise and arcane phraseology involving measurements, employment practices, dockets and the weather.

Hi there is a minimum quantity of carrots that can be sold (1) so they should have been able to sell it to you only thing I can think of was earlier this week we had an epw which is an Emergency Product Withdrawal due to something that we haven’t been told about, the product was removed from the shelf and not able to be sold. The one you picked up must have come out of a prebagged packet which was opened. The manager should have explained this to you but if they hadn’t been made aware that there was a problem he/she wouldn’t know what to do.

You can’t purchase items without a barcode at the customer service desk. Those tills don’t have scales.
So any veg you choose yourself would need to go to a cashier!
As has been said, the tills ( though)can easily deal with a single carrot!
I work at Tesco too.

That's ridiculous! I was given a French stick in Asda once because it didn't have a label and they were about to close.

If they were avoiding ppl tearing apart organic packs, then wdnt this apply to any loose veg so they cdnt sell any?? And does this just happen with carrots?? I often take 1 of something up to the til loose in Tesco and have never had a problem with any. I will try with 1 carrot next time tho!

FridgeCut Ah! It was I who felt comfortable to employ Pumpkinisland89. Thank you for pulling me up. I only required the CRB- Criminal Rootveg Burglar check performed upon her. The checks are so expensive! However, I should have thought about the tenderness of Salad and its Special Needs. I shall go ahead with the DBS, thank you for your help. Pumpkinisland89 Glad to hear your carrot record is clean (your last comment). I can now employ you for work with carrots and other root vegetables in a one to one environment.

Did you complete a full DBS (Despicable Behaviour with Salad) check or was it just an old school CRB (criminal rootveg burglar) check?

Tesco clearly are carrotist.

This is BONKERS! I'm sure my Co-op would have just given me it for free. When a packet of baking paper had lost its label and was last on the shelf, they just gave it to me free. Also when a large towel hadn't got price label they put it through as a small towel.... What a blooming stupid Manager that Tesco's man is. Write to their HQ and ask for him to be retrained!!!

This reminds me of Rhod Gilbert's Jacket Potato argument he had in Tesco. I don't know how to do a link but look for it on YouTube it's really funny

In our local Tesco you only weigh/sticker your own veg for scan as you shop. If the OP was doing that, maybe a new member of staff on there wouldn't have come across someone not bothering to wait in the queue to price their stuff before? Maybe that store doesn't sell carrots loose & someone had opened a bag but there was no code as they dont stock them? Tesco are always helpful here, so im guessing there's more to this than we've been told........

The reason is the rise in people dewrapping organic stuff and trying to buy them loose as the cheaper non organic stuff, or in Waitrose people buying one solitary stick of veg for the free coffee. It totally pips off the staff. I have come across wrapped organic stuff where people have clearly tried to lift the label. It is a real menace- the sharp elbowed middle class attachment to supermarket theft in all its guises. Remember AWT, or Richard of Richard and Judy?Take a look at threads where people boast of what they steal through the self service checkouts. It makes everything so much more expensive for all the rest of us.

I buy single carrots from Asda quite often for a Gino D’acampo lamb linguini dish, no issues from them. No questions asked either Hmm

has technology really gone so far/too far that they cant now over ride and type in the price of the carrot and it has to all be scanned with code from label!

Probably this is a bit random but a crazy friend of mine in my youth decided to post me a banana, he wrote the address on the skin and stuck a label on with a stamp. GPO delivered. Poor customer service Tesco!

Why do you need to label fruit and veg?
I never weigh veg.
