To wonder why Tescos wouldn't sell me a carrot?

To be clear: it wasn't a big deal, I just shrugged and (bravely) survived.

I tried to buy a carrot. It came from a loose produce shelf. Last one which I thought was a bit odd. I didn't bother weighing it myself because there was a queue at the scales. Went to pay expecting the cashier to weigh it. She moaned a bit about me not putting a label on it and moaned even more when I said I didn't need a bag for it. She was obviously new as she didn't know how to put it through the till so she called a manager over. The manager said something I didn't hear and went off to the veg section. He came back and said because there wasn't a label on the carrot shelf he couldn't sell me it?

I've had it before when a shop has refused to sell me a cucumber because it was prepacked but the label had come off. I sort of see why with that (although it's stupid) but why with a lose carrot?

By the way I am over 18 and have no previous veg related offences.

That is strange, if they sell loose carrots why they won’t let you buy one!

Gabilan · 18/02/2018 13:17

Was it special vinegar?

Or just a lot of vinegar? Actually balsamic vinegar and some of the flashier wine vinegars can easily be that much.

if they sell loose carrots why they won’t let you buy one!

We've established this:

The OP looks as if she might do nefarious things if sold only one carrot

Carrots cannot be kept in solitary confinement, even large ones, in fact especially large ones, and so need to be sold in pairs at least

Staff are poorly trained/ the weighing machine is broken/ non existent

thenightsky · 18/02/2018 13:25

There carot there rools. Hun. xxx

LeSquigh · 18/02/2018 13:25

I buy single carrots ALL the time on my way to work for salads. You just weigh them don’t you? They don’t need a label. This is completely mad.

Feeling unwell while shopping in Tesco recently, I remember noticing goods in front - only one pack - and thinking "Oh Lord, Not the carrots again". Being ill means I simply can't remember why I thought carrots were going to be a problem, but sure enough, cashier was soon departing to seek help, then explaining to customer that carrot purchase would only be authorised if paid for in cash, rather than card, which had been offered earlier. It's just possible that I've got the reason the wrong way round, but explanation involved the very small transaction.

Through my pain-haze, I was still convinced that the reason involved the carrots, and this thread confirms it, so I plan to avoid queues with this veg ahead.

novalia89 · 18/02/2018 13:30

In France you have to weigh and label the loose veg yourself. Maybe there weren't any scales at the tills?

sexnotgender · 18/02/2018 13:32

I love reading other shopping bills! The cookies for £2.49 tho??? they are the Nakd bars cashew cookie flavour not actual cookies. 4 for £2.49 is ok as they are nearly £1 each.

sexnotgender · 18/02/2018 13:35

You guys are funny.

It was 6 babybel for £1
The vinegar was organic apple cider vinegar for my hair (I’m a curly girl).

twoplytwoply · 18/02/2018 13:39

Maybe carrots are like pet rats, and it's cruel to keep them alone so Tesco will only sell them in pairs at a minimum?

SusanneLinder · 18/02/2018 13:45

I bought two carrots from Tesco on Friday. This is your problem OP. They don't like lonely carrots....Grin

WickedGoodDoge · 18/02/2018 13:48

I feel your pain but I've discovered that chopping and freezing works. Just throw a handful of frozen chopped celery into the casserole.

MumW you have just made my year! I love celery in jambalaya etc but don’t use it that often and never know what to do with the rest of it. Freezing it is pure genius! Grin

ItsNachoCheese · 18/02/2018 13:50

Ive always been able to buy single carrots in tesco, i buy them for ddog as he loves them

Mummyoflittledragon · 18/02/2018 13:51

Orangepeels bought a single carrot in a gossamer bag. My bet is she nipped to the loo with that bad boy. Wink. I’m sure it’s an every day occurrence in France or wherever else the carrefour is from whence said phallic object was purLOINed. Ok purchased.

StealthPolarBear · 18/02/2018 13:51

You lot are weird celery haters. You're clearly all rampant feminists - they flock together based on their weird hatred of celery.
I use a whole bunch of celery in bologna is etc. Half of one in a salad. And I snack on sticks. I rarely have top much. Sometimes I buy two bunches at the supermarket!

StealthPolarBear · 18/02/2018 13:52

Bolognese

FizzyGreenWater · 18/02/2018 13:56

HURRAH for the underground single carrot revolution.

Can we now move to the next stage, putting the carrot longways on the conveyor belt with two dividers way in front of and way behind the carrot?

BendydickCuminsnatch · 18/02/2018 13:56

??? I don't think i've ever weighed loose veg in the supermarket! I mean, there are scales and stuff but I never thought it was mandatory, and clearly it's not because I've always been allowed the unweighed veg. Weird!

impostersyndrome · 18/02/2018 13:57

I chop up carrots and celery and freeze them, ready for casseroles, soups and so on. Now, if only I could find somewhere that sells celery with the leaves on. They’re divine chopped up in meat sauce, but I can’t find them anywhere.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 18/02/2018 13:57

There isn't a labelling machine at my Tesco. That's just stupid.

Oysterbabe · 18/02/2018 13:58

Celery is gross. It tastes like piss.

StealthPolarBear · 18/02/2018 13:59

We could have been friends oyster

fc301 · 18/02/2018 14:04

OMG the celery life hack! Just kept some in a glass of water till it rotted away!

KurriKurri · 18/02/2018 14:08

I was given a sweet potato in Tesco last week, because the self service machine was having none of it. After several attempts by me and the staff member to get it to accept one sweet potato, she swiped her card and said 'just have it for free'.

That carrot they refused to give you will just be taken away and humanely (or psossibly inhumanely) destroyed. Never to fulfill it's purpose in life. (Next time shop online and if you can't have a carrot they'll substitute you a can of air freshener and a giant pack of incontinence pads)

Oysterbabe · 18/02/2018 14:10

That carrot has been saved. It's life purpose wasn't to be used as OP was planning.

Frombothsidesnow · 18/02/2018 14:14

I adore celery. Every now and then I think about just eating celery until I shrink to a fashionable size 8, and then I see a chip.
