Trump Talk: or, Lift every voice and sing

It's Black History Month and the fight goes on (plus, we all need a boost that does not come from ye olde hop flask).

Lift every voice and sing

Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us.

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;

Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,

Till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years,

God of our silent tears,
Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who hast by Thy might

Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,

May we forever stand.

True to our God,
True to our native land.

James Weldon Johnson (1900)

You guys have been a LIFELINE. No satellite reception and poor bandwidth for streaming news.

But MN app (and this thread) are working great! Back to civilization tomorrow.

Currently about 20°f and 3 inches of snow. Beautiful but cold. Our Trumpster pal leaves today so DH and I can loudly proclaim our furiosity (made up word) without kicking up a dust snow storm of rhetoric.

So it's just coming up to 12pm on a Tuesday in Washington DC and Trump has pretty much been tweeting about what he sees on TV for the last 4 hours - is that right?

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 20/02/2018 17:01

I believe the correct term for it is “executive time”

lionheart · 20/02/2018 17:28

Non-golfing 'executive time.'

Interesting that Alex Van Der Zwaan’s father-in-law is the Russian oligarch in charge of state-run Alfa Bank. The Weekly List is full of Alfa Bank, including the bank pinging Trump Org servers during the 2016 election.

I'm not religious, but the the thing that struck me about his tweet storm on Sunday was that Trump very obviously, despite having nothing better to do, wasn't in church.

Obviously I can't remember every occasion, but my impression is that in most countries, including pre-Trump America, the Sunday following a tragedy involves silences at sports games, memorials, and if they are Christian, the head of state being photographed leaving a church service.

I don't think Trump cares any more about Christianity now than he did in 1989, but he certainly seems to be supported by many Christians and likes to use Christianity e.g. 'you can say Merry Christmas Again'.

I assume that the 'Give me all your money' televangelist Christians are either corrupt or crazy, but do ordinary Christians care about this gap?

I'm confused because as far as I can remember every American president in my lifetime has been vocally Christian, and it has seemed impossible for anybody to be elected if they were Atheist or Jewish (Nevermind Muslim!), but nobody seems to care that Trump can't do the basic religious things like appearing to have a link to a church community, even if it's just a performance.

Or was this a partisan tragedy?

Caught @seanhannity at the gym tonight. Didn’t know he was taking about American alleged interference in other countries’ elections as an excuse for Russia violating our sovereignty. That’s exactly the whataboutism argument Putin’s tv channels make. Exactly.

Jesus. Hannity is now excusing Russia’s interference in our election by claiming that we’re as bad as Russia. Hannity. On Fox News. Now a mouthpiece for the Kremlin. What does Putin have on all these people? And wtf happened to the Republican Party?

From a new survey:

"American voters support stricter gun laws 66 – 31 percent, the highest level of support ever
measured by the independent Quinnipiac University National Poll."

Quinnipiac poll finds a 38-point swing nationally in favor of stricter gun laws since 12/2015, when it was underwater at 47-50%.

Q poll: Support for universal background checks for gun sales is 97-2%.

Legislation to require this (by closing the private sale loophole) was filibustered 54-46 in a Democratic-majority Senate in 2013.

An interesting take on the Trump/Christianity issue is that apparently many evangelicals believe that Scrotus IS the antichrist. They believe that him being elected president heralds the end of days, will bring on Armageddon and thus the 'rapture'.

They actually support him as doing so will antagonize other countries, provoke nuclear war and hasten the end of the world.

Puts an entirely different spin on Scrotus' victory as God's will, doesn't it?
