To think DS shouldn’t still have signs of Scarlet Fever after 10 days

Today is last day of Amoxicillin. (Possibly because of age but original GP definitely messed up prescription) originally was 5 days course(!!?!!) but since increased to 10 days.

Not particularly poorly when diagnosed with Scarlet Fever. Had rash and was irritable but temp under 38 degrees. Did have chills overnight without a fever.

6 days later a high temp again for 24 hours. Did see OOH’s Dr but told it was tail end of Scarlet Fever (I think it was actually a cold)

Ok thursday and Friday and Saturday morning but earlier temp spikes to 39 and he complains of sore tummy and being cold.

We go to ooH and we are told he still has remnants of Scarlet Fever (you can supposedly see it in his tongue) so to finish course of Ab’s And he will be fine.

The antibiotics were for 10 days and today is the last day.

I think I would have expected to get another course of antibiotics if he was still showing signs of it.

If she had said it was viral (he does have a cold) I would have been ok lol.

Just not convinced - we were in and out in 2 mins.

It shouldn’t be amoxicillin your child is on. It should be a penicillin. See this www.healthline.com/health/infection/amoxicillin-vs-penicillin#indications

After starting penicillin the child should be feeling much better after Just 48 hours. After 10 days of amoxicillin I would urgently seek medical advice and get the correct antibiotic.

I was on the other thread and I agree DS had penicillin 14 day dose for scarlet fever

Luckymummy22 · 17/02/2018 22:00

That worries me a bit as well. He’s 3 but initially he got prescribed 2 x 5ml doses of Amoxicillin 3 tines daily for 5 days. Got changed to 1x5ml 3 times a day for 7 days when we queried it. Then got upped to 10 days when I spoke to GP the other day when his temp was high.
So not overly convinced it’s been well handled at all.
Even if it was a cold he had on Tuesday, i’m surprised his temp spiked again.
It’s not went back up again today though and he’s a lot better.
I think it’s the same one he’s seen twice now at OOHs and both times we’ve been in & out in a couple of minutes.

Will monitor him tomorrow.

My DD had already been prescribed penicillin V for her ‘viral’ sore throat when she got a bit of a rash. So we were told to fill that and she’s perfectly fine now.

He can have temps quite easily though.

I think Amoxicillin can be prescribed for Scarlet Fever when there is a problem with Penicillin. I think we would have struggled to get him to take Penicillin if I’m honest.
His temp was 39 when we were at OOH’s. But was ok when he went to bed.
I just don’t understand how a child can have Scarlet Fever and be totally Ok less than 48 hours later and then get a fever almost a week later, be ok for 48 hours and then a fever again.

My son has just had Scarlett fever, he's 4, and got given a 10 day course of clarithromycin (penicillin allergy). He actually didn't fully recover for about 3 weeks, and was still weak and lethargic, with a cough and cold symptoms basically about two weeks after finishing the course. Nasty illness. Hope you LO gets better asap

Quartz2208 · 18/02/2018 08:29

The antibiotics probably started to kill the infection or dampen it but did not succeed so came back. DS has an infection got better on a 5 day course then got worse again and needed another course to finish

Luckymummy22 · 18/02/2018 11:26

And he’s ok today.......

Seriously this boy gets me so stressed at times!!

I feel more confident now to wait until tomorrow and if his temp spikes again then I get an appt at GP tomorrow morning.

Not even convinced it is after effects of scarlet fever. Think his temp yesterday may have been viral.

And he had milk before he saw OOH nurse practitioner so wonder if that affected his tongue!!
