Three days sick for tonsillitis?

PlumFairy2014 · 14/02/2018 14:27

I'm a bit worried to be off a third day, but it has been horrific and I have quite an up and about job.
The Penicillin is working, but it still hurts to sallow.
It's a new job and there is no sick pay. I have only been there a month.

DD has had several really bad bouts of it - I was one of the 'it's only a bad sore throat' until I saw how she suffered. You need to take care of yourself and listen to your body. She had the same worries about work, but on the whole, her bosses have been understanding.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/02/2018 15:17

I had it really bad & ice cold water reduced the inflammation noticeably.

The night something exploded in the back of my throat & I could smell the foulness was particularly memorable. As was the accompanying ear infection that made me deaf but played organ music 24/7.

Penicillin was my best friend at the time.

I avoided black coffee and alcohol for ages afterwards, they made my throat feel so sore.

Three days isn't long for tonsilitis. It's evil.

Hope you're on the mend soon.

ChikiTIKI · 14/02/2018 15:30

I have it at the moment too, second time this year. Trying to power through without antibiotics this time as its not as bad as last time and I can physically swallow food and water with this one. Mornings are the worst for pain :( Really not ideal when breastfeeding though. I was so panicked last time because I couldn't swallow water! Thought I was going to shrivel up! Hope you feel better. Don't go back to work until you are better, it will just prolong recovery otherwise xx

As you feel really ghastly it can't be helped. It's a damn nuisance being ill when you have a new job but it can happen to the best of us. Look after yourself.

Wellingtoncat · 14/02/2018 15:41

YANBU - I think I was off for at least a week when I had it - may have been more!

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 14/02/2018 15:42

Tonsillitis is really awful. I worked for a well known children’s drama group ( we’ll call them X) and had to call my supervisor to let her know I was ill with it. Her response? “At X we don’t do ill! You don’t sound ill to me!”
So I made another dr appt to say that the penicillin wasn’t working but she said I’d developed quinsy and would need to go to hospital for treatment.
I stupidly packed my uniform for X thinking that I would be ok to work later that day but I was admitted.
It was with great satisfaction that I messaged my supervisor saying, “X may not do ill but I do, I’ve been admitted to hospital so I won’t be in today.”
Bastard company. I left soon after.
I had quinsy again last December. I really need to get my tonsils out! Sad
Take all the time off you need OP Flowers

My child has just had tonsillitis for first time, I’ve never had it so this has been my first experience. It was awful. He was really really not well for 7-10 days. I wouldn’t worry, just get better.

StormTreader · 14/02/2018 15:46

For the sore throat - a mug of boiling water with good squirts of runny honey and lemon juice in it. I went from "ow" every time I couldnt put off swallowing any more to feeling almost unsettled at how well it worked. Plus, you cant overdose on it like you can with Lemsip.

SingingSands · 14/02/2018 16:25

Don’t feel bad, it’s just horrendous. I had it bad a few years ago and ended up in hospital on a drip. My boss was off with it for 4 weeks last year! It’s certainly not “just” a sore throat.

Get well soon Wine

spidey66 · 14/02/2018 16:36

I've had it twice as an adult, and probably as a kid as well. I was wiped out by it. My enduring memory is being crouched over the loo, spitting in because I couldn't even swallow my own saliva. That was when I was actually able to get out of bed.

The difference between a sore throat and tonsillitis is like the difference between a cold and flu.

Take as much time as you need off, it's horrendous.

spidey66 · 14/02/2018 16:39

ps it was over 30 years ago I had it, but I will never, ever forget how horrible I felt with it for as long as I live.

KnitFastDieWarm · 14/02/2018 16:48

Tonsillitis (accompanied by glandular fever) nearly killed me when I was five, it’s not a mild illness! Rest up, your work will just have to cope Flowers

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 14/02/2018 16:57

Tonsillitis can be very nasty. It is also often caused by streptococcal bacteria which can make other people very ill too.

PlumFairy2014 · 14/02/2018 17:16

I think I would actually pick giving birth over the last two days of this illness! That might be the gas and air talking though.

Thanks for this folks. I feel much better and a lot less wimpy. I had it as a child but just remember ice cream.

DD had a cold last week and mentioned her throat was sore, but she was still really bouncy. The Dr very kindly gave her the once over yesterday too.

Lemon and honey have been N absolute miracle. DH even went wild and got Manuka honey to see if it would help. He also took the painkillers away as I was too out of it to remember when I had taken them. Confused

Also called my boss and he seemed very ok about it. There is one person in my office who is awful when people are off ill, so I can just feel my ears burning.

PlumFairy2014 · 14/02/2018 17:18

And I never realised how much of my own saliva I must swallow. Never needed a spit cup before.

It wipes my DH out ! He literally slept for a week only woke for pain relief . Was awful for him. Please don't be hard on a yourself and get plenty of rest

PrivateParkin · 14/02/2018 17:35

Urgh tonsillitis is awful - I was off for a week when I had it. Have you tried making a Lucozade jelly OP? You need a packet of regular orange jelly and instead of making it with boiling water, use a combination of orange juice and original Lucozade. It's sugar central but obviously that's allowed as you need energy - and it's easy on your poor throat. Get well soon OP!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 14/02/2018 17:41

It usually takes me 7-14 days to get over tonsillitis. It's flipping horrible & really knocks you for 6. When I was still working the GPs were always fine to give me a sick note (if you think it might be needed). Ignore the office big gob. Hope you start feeling better soon Flowers

Ollivander84 · 14/02/2018 17:54

Tonsillitis is "kill me now" level, I'm immunosuppressed and it's awful. I get a temp, hallucinate, pour with sweat, can't swallow my own spit. Last time at OOH I got a doctor who said "and what makes you think it's tonsillitis?"
I opened my mouth, he recoiled and threw a prescription at me. I think the pus dripping at the back of my throat, the swelling and raging temperature might have been a clue
