to ask what your Y6 dc think about World Book Day 2018 and what they’re going to dress up as?

Ds isn’t mad keen on dressing up, even more so now he’s reached the final year of primary.

He might just go in his own clothes with one of his favourite books.

Can I ask what your Y6 darlings are going as? Do they still enjoy this?

I know it’s all part of the great ‘let’s get everyone reading and enjoy it’ and schools do a good job of that but doesn’t help when you have a dc who really doesn’t like the dressing up bit, luckily he’s an avid reader.

I’m not sure why I posted in AIBU but it has a lot of traffic and WBD can bring out the unreasonableness in us all (plus I’m being nosey and trying to get some ideas).

Our school puts restrictions on it - books by Julia Donaldson only or whatever, and because they haven't told us what that will be yet, we can't plan at all. Fed up with it because DS might not be interested in the characters they choose. No idea why they do this.

I feel quite lucky then, Mum. No restrictions at Ds school.

In year 6 ( ds is older now ) ds decided that he wanted to win the book token competition so he went as The Boy in the Dress - he also hates dressing up etc but is VERY competitive !! He won the competition and was very pleased with himself.
I hate sorting out dressing up for school luckily dd now in year 5 usually plans something herself

It will be a relief when we no longer have to do this.

I also work in education and have to join in with dress up days - I hate it ( this year I'm borrowing dd's Halloween costume and going as Mog!!)

We are doing The Day the Crayons Quit. Come as a colour. We try to avoid kids feeling they need shop bought costumes so look for ideas where they can use what they already own.

Thankfully I don’t have to do this now, but if I had to do it again, I’d let Dd wear her normal clothes, and tell people she’s a Muggle from Harry Potter.

It's all a bit ruined with 'normal clothes' characters or everyone in identical Asda costumes based on the movie adaptation.

It should be a celebration of books but very rarely appears to be so and I think schools should concentrate on the stories themselves- get kids to buy a new book, not a costume.

Mine is dressing up as a video game character from an age inappropriate game. No parenting prize for me ! Luckily the character is basically a Clint Eastwood style cowboy so he’s taking in a western novel from the library.

I was happy to think this would be the last year but his secondary does in in Y7 & 8! With more restrictions - eg a scary character.

Most boys characters are not v distinctively- my older went as Alex Ryder with just an ID card

Hardly. World Book Day fancy dress has been done to death, and only the very youngest children actually enjoyed it anyway. Kids turning up in simple outfits aren't ruining the day for anyone

You're quite right that schools should be focused on the books not the costumes, though (which seems to contradict your first point).

I have fond memories of homemade costumes in y5/6, but maybe I'm ranting and you are right that's it's been done now. I just see classes full of Disney princesses and identical Alices (no-one having read the book) and then the normal curriculum for the day.

Apparently a large number of kids don't own a book, that's where the focus should be.

I agree the focus should be on books - dd's school did this last year though no dressing up but reading activities and dd said yesterday ( when sorting out a costume) that she missed dressing up last year . I've always made mine dress up as a book character from a book they have actually read but we never buy anything special - maybe the odd bit of fabric as dd likes to create her own props etc

But that's not because I'm trying to win any parenting prizes ( I will always go for the easy option) it's because dd actually likes doing things like this- unlike me

Some of our children dress in their favourite hobby clothes - dancer/ horserider / footballer etc and then choose a book character to match.

You are being unreasonable to ask....World Book Day is still a couple of weeks away so some of us don’t even know if our kids are dressing up!! —still bitter from the year I made a costume and they had to take a decorated hat instead—

DD is in year 6 and her class have been assigned The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings. She's going as an elf; I'm bidding on a floaty medieval dress on eBay now and will have to resize it for her. Also pointy ears.

She wasn't interested in dressing up until I showed her the elf costume possibilities.

In year 6 my son and his friends all wore football kits and tutus - The Boy In The Dress. They looked fab and it was lovely for them all to do something together before they went their separate ways for senior school. My son has always hated dressing up but doing it as a group was fun

Mine doesn't know yet.

His brother did hiccup from how to train your Dragon in year 5 and Percy Jackson for year 6 (jeans and orange t-shirt, Boro in your pocket, if you want to put some effort in write 'camp half-blood' on the shirt)

My yr 5 is going as Stanley from Holes. Orange jumpsuit and a spade. Job done.

I bought some hobbit feet a few years ago so DS 2 is going as a different Hobbit yet again.

When my brother was in year 6 he went in a suit as Lord sugar 😂 he was (very slowly!) reading his autobiography, he’s always been interested in businesses and watched the apprentice religiously 😂
