Not really an AIBU but I have been drooling over images of rainbow cake and red velvet cake and am heading to central London tomorrow with my kids and wondered what the best cake shop in central London would be? I would like to sit down and enjoy my cake so am not interested in an establishment where you just buy cake? I have heard good things about hummingbird bakeries but am I right in this you cannot sit down in there to eat your cake?

So,to update, I went to soho today and paid a visit to the hummingbird bakery.
I had two gigantic slices of rainbow cake and red velvet cake.
The rainbow cake was fantastic but the red velvet cake was a bit disappointing.

I second ladureé for amazing macarons but if it’s cake you’re after then definitely Konditor and Cook. I’m drooling just thinking about it!

MrsSchadenfreude · 16/02/2018 19:55

Pierre Hermé macarons are infinitely better than Ladurée.

If you’re in soho for the cake, pop into chin chin for the hot chocolate & fluff. You may get type 2 but it’s worth every second of it

FranticallyPeaceful · 16/02/2018 20:18

(I think that’s what it’s called. I had it brought to me in an oversized mug thing when I was poorly)

Excited101 · 16/02/2018 20:24

Noooo if you're in Chin Chin get the skillet chocolate chip cookie... HEAVEN

RedRosie there is a German bakery called Artisan Foods that are at Borough market and a couple of other markets around the city. I don’t know for sure if they make Black Forest gateaux but you could call and ask. Their ricotta berry cake is phenomenal.

fruitlovingmonkey · 19/02/2018 10:57

MrsSchadenfreude I think we are talking about the same stall.

fishonabicycle · 19/02/2018 11:37

Why have I read this??? Argh. I've just given up sugar for Lent.

SersioulycanitgetWORSE · 19/02/2018 11:42

Yes l, eto.

Walked past a few cake shops the other day on wardour Street then was hit by this window... It was Sunday and heaving in there!!

SersioulycanitgetWORSE · 19/02/2018 11:43

mrs I'm not convinced of that we did a day trying the top ones in Paris and they didn't taste that different

SersioulycanitgetWORSE · 19/02/2018 11:45

L eto op.

Konditor & Cook at Borough. You can sit down for your Curly Wurly Cake, and then buy lots of lovely food from Borough Market to take home.

Fabrique for Swedish cardomon buns. Ole & Steen look great for pastries and buns too.

AlcoholicsUnanimous · 19/02/2018 13:05

MrsSchadenfreude I agree, Pierre Herme ones are incredible. Where do you get them from? I couldn't find them where they used to be in Selfridges.

beepthemeep · 19/02/2018 13:13

A friend of mine once bought two large curly wurly cakes for a dinner party. We only managed one of them.

Over the course of the weekend, he ate the entire second cake. By himself.

Then looked it up and found it had about 20,000 calories in the whole thing (I haven't checked this, but given the size and decadence of those things, it sounds about right 🙈)!!!!!

MrsSchadenfreude · 19/02/2018 18:39

AlcoholicsUnanimous - Pierre Hermé is still in Selfridges - I think between the make up hall and the magazines, unless they have gone back to the Food Hall?

MrsSchadenfreude · 19/02/2018 18:45

Seriously - Pierre Hermé have more interesting flavours. Ladurée rely on their reputation, and the fact that tourists will always buy there. If you’re in Paris and want the traditional flavours, try Carette at Trocadero. (I used to live in Paris and Carette was my breakfast stop when I worked on Victor Hugo.)

Fruitlovingmonkey - yes, I think we are!

Inspired by this thread I got my DH a mini curly whirly cake from Konditor and Cook for his bday. I was so disappointed- all I could taste was sugar, and there was way too much frosting in proportion to the sponge. Maybe the regular sized one is more balanced. I did sample their Victoria sponge cake and it was amazing, so in hindsight wished I’d ordered that instead!
