AIBU to ask you tell me where I can eat the nicest cake in central London

Not really an AIBU but I have been drooling over images of rainbow cake and red velvet cake and am heading to central London tomorrow with my kids and wondered what the best cake shop in central London would be? I would like to sit down and enjoy my cake so am not interested in an establishment where you just buy cake? I have heard good things about hummingbird bakeries but am I right in this you cannot sit down in there to eat your cake?

Laduree, Laduree, Laduree. mmmmmm.

Now craving what I cannot afford in terms either of calories or actual money (but I might make an apple cake later in the week; that's pretty good)

I hope that wherever you do choose lives up to expectations.

L’Eto in Soho. Have the millefeuille.

halfwitpicker · 14/02/2018 01:15

These all sound amazing. Now I just need to move to London.

newmumwithquestions · 14/02/2018 07:13

The best cake in the world comes from a little cafe in St Ives.

I may plan another holiday just so I can go there again.

(I appreciate this isn’t helpful, sorry OP)

HamishTheTalkingCactus · 14/02/2018 07:23

I've only been to Hummingbird in Richmond, cakes were nice but not spectacular. My recommendation is Dominique Ansel near Victoria. Thanks for that most interesting article, catfromjapan.

Crumbs & Doilies in Soho.

ourkidmolly · 14/02/2018 07:30

For pastries it must be Ole and Steen. If you like cinnamon buns these are the best ones in the world no exaggeration.

SquirmOfEels · 14/02/2018 07:46

As you acknowledge in OP, this isn't an AIBU

would you consider reporting your post and asking for it to be moved to the London topic?

so it will be easier to find ahgain when I need a treat

RazzleDazzle3 · 14/02/2018 07:50

Another vote for konditor and Cooke, grays inn road. Lemon chiffon cake is loooovely!! 😍😍😍😍

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 14/02/2018 08:46

K&C’s lemon chiffon cake is my favourite cake in the world. I wept hot tears when their concession in the Curzon Soho closed and I could no longer scoff a slice while watching a film.

AngeloMysterioso · 14/02/2018 09:01

Maison Bertaux in Soho. Just heavenly.

LuluJakey1 · 14/02/2018 09:07

I would second Maison Bertaux in Soho. It is French and has been there a very very long time. Fantastic lattes and lovely cakes - make them all themselves. Very friendly and lovely atmosphere. I have been going there 20 years. Proper cafe not just to takeaway.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 14/02/2018 09:10

My DP and I had our first (blind) date in Maison Bertaux, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. The loos are a bit dodgy, though.

frieda909 · 14/02/2018 09:15

Another vote for Cutter and Squidge! The ‘biskies’ are amazing.

AHungryMum · 14/02/2018 09:20

Hahaha just spotted the typo in my original post, it should have said curly wurly cake not curly surly cake! Stupid auto correct. 🤣 Agree with others that their lemon chiffon cake is also heavenly...

lurkingnotlurking · 14/02/2018 14:02

Cinnamon buns and hot chocolate in nordic bakery (Marylebone, soho and covent garden) are wonderful. Although we are all about Crosstown now because omg

Rebeccaslicker · 14/02/2018 14:11

I shared a big birthday with a colleague in the city so we ordered Konditor and Cook cakes for the office - a couple of the fancy curly wurly ones, a toffee one, a red velvet one, a lemon chiffon one, and a big tray of mixed brownies.

It was the brownies that went first. Dry, unappetising nasty brownies. Why??! I'm not a real cake lover, but surely you'd pick lemon or toffee over brownies?!

RedRosie · 14/02/2018 19:34

Is there anywhere I can get my husband a proper slice of Black Forest Gateaux? He loves it. He's not very well. And it would really make him happy. He is always disappointed with the dry, mass-produced stuff - always looks 100 nicer than it is ...

lurkingnotlurking · 14/02/2018 19:54

Black forest is hard to find these days. There is a place on Leicester Square that does a lot of cakes that would be my first port of call for looking

lurkingnotlurking · 14/02/2018 19:55

(the square itself)

DropZoneOne · 14/02/2018 20:02

I got a bus this morning that went past Peggy Porschen. It was so pretty and I wanted to jump out and have cake for breakfast.

lurkingnotlurking · 14/02/2018 20:06

I've tried to come up with a name for the place on Leicester Square. Sorry, it looks like it's gone

DoubleLottchen · 14/02/2018 20:07

RedRosie German Gymnasium near Kings Cross does excellent Black forest gateau. £7 for a slice. Totally worth it.

Not sure if you can take it away though, it is a proper restaurant rather than a bakery.

Stellarbella · 14/02/2018 20:12

A vote for Beas of Bloomsbury. On Theobald's Road, near the British Museum. I always get a seat whenever I go. They do a thing called a duffin (it's a cross between a doughnut and a muffin). Heaven.
