Not really an AIBU but I have been drooling over images of rainbow cake and red velvet cake and am heading to central London tomorrow with my kids and wondered what the best cake shop in central London would be? I would like to sit down and enjoy my cake so am not interested in an establishment where you just buy cake? I have heard good things about hummingbird bakeries but am I right in this you cannot sit down in there to eat your cake?

Konditor and cook..... a few dotted around..... Waterloo, borough market, grays inn road, Shaftesbury ave?

LizzieSiddal · 15/02/2018 07:02

I’m off to London for the day today.

I’ve taken notes Grin

Bunbunbunny · 15/02/2018 07:17

Crumbs and dollies is a million times better than Hummingbird and I love my Hummingbirds Black bottom cupcakes!! It’s just off Carnaby Street and so yummy! Love watching her videos on you tube and their cakes are amazing as well www.crumbsanddoilies.co.uk

MrsSchadenfreude · 15/02/2018 07:23

The best cake in the world is Bienenstich, and you can get it from a German cake stall in Borough Market. It is my treat after my appointment at Guy’s.

RedRosie Patisserie Valerie do a Black Forest gateau, at least the branch in Wilton Street does - I had it on Saturday!

Oblomov18 · 15/02/2018 07:50

Right. That's it! I'm going to Konditor and cook, next time I'm in Waterloo!

RedRosie · 15/02/2018 07:54

Thank you - DH wasn't keen on the Patisserie Valerie cake (it's one of those mass-produced things he finds dry and not 'proper') but I sometimes work near German Gymnasium Double, so could check that out ...

Myself I like really good quality plain cakes and hate buttercream (although proper cream yummm) so all the cupcakes are useless to me. Give me a perfect Victoria sponge or almond cake or St Clements cake or a simple chocolate cake ... made with proper fresh ingredients.

Ottolenghi Islington

AHungryMum · 15/02/2018 09:46

@RedRosie - the much loved Konditor and Cook do an excellent Orange and almond St Clements! 👍🏼

user1471556443 · 15/02/2018 09:51

Thanks everyone for all your great suggestions
Definitely do NOT go to patisserie valerie for black forest, I had it last month and it was the worst thing ever!!!

Konditor & Cook and Hummingbird both solid recommendations. However for an awesome slice of cake in a truly beautiful setting, get yourself to the Wallace Collection in Manchester Square (behind Selfridges).
There is a lovely cafe/restaurant in the atrium, run by Peyton & Byrne I think.
See some beautiful art, antiques, eat amazing cake, sigh happily.
You're welcome Grin

The Princesscake at Bageriet in Rose Street, Covent Garden is exquisite. It's a Swedish bakery and at the moment they have Semlor buns, as it's easter. Very tiny place, just eight seats, but a hidden gem just off Long Acre.

Patisserie Valerie remains one of life's great disappointments. How can cakes that look so pretty and creamy taste of so little? Sad

StoatofDisarray · 15/02/2018 11:48

Once more with a link: The Delaunay on the Aldwych (nr. Covent Garden) is renowned for its cakes. www.thedelaunay.com/counter

Their sachetorte is second to none.

viques · 15/02/2018 11:48

Damn you Queen of the Andals. It's hard enough to get a seat in the LitRev as it is without you inviting all and sundry to eat there.

user1471556443 · 15/02/2018 12:01

Can anyone give me an approximate price of how much a slice of cake would be likely to cost in all these establishments?

DearTeddyRobinson · 15/02/2018 12:04

About £4-5.

NewMumwithquestions - where in St Ives? You can't just tease like that. I go there often and I know the best ice cream shop (Moomaid), the best crab sandwich etc - but good cake has alluded me.

PookieSnackenberger · 15/02/2018 12:12

I think Patisserie Valerie is a bit mass produced but my kids love the chocolate cake slices and not too bad price wise if you buy a box. When I work near St Pancras I get them a box on the way home.

Laduree in Covent Garden is sooo pretty. My youngest children stood and stared at everything for a good 10 mins as the selection was huge.

My vote is head for Soho and wander around. There are so many good options there that you're spoilt for choice.

Feezles · 15/02/2018 12:15

Chocywoccydoodah do lovely cake as well. But my favourite is Konditor and Cook.

user1471556443 · 15/02/2018 12:33

Ok I think I will head to soho tomorrow and look at the selection in the window of l'eto and then head to hummingbird and will also try to find a konditor and cook!!!
I was meant to go on Wednesday but as it was raining I postponed the cake trip for today!!! 😊

I'm liking the idea of a cake shop crawl. Like a pub crawl, but with cakes instead of pubs. This should definitely be A Thing.

Labracadabra · 15/02/2018 16:58

Ooh placemarking for ideas for my 40th birthday

phoenix1973 · 15/02/2018 17:03

This thread makes me wish I lived in London.

yrhengi · 15/02/2018 17:08

Second Crumbs and Doilies too. Jemma, the owner, has her own Youtube channel, as Cupcake Jemma, and you can watch them making the cakes...
