Won't give me another wheelie bin...

Bins here are collected weekly. EVERY Sunday without fail my wheelie bin is full. (There collected Thursday) several times local cats (I believe) have managed to get the bags out the wheelie bin as they are open with the bags on top because they are over flowing. Anyway these cats will rip out all my rubbish so the garden will be covered. I called the council and asked for another wheelie bin as several neighbours have more than one of the same colour top bins. I was told I wasn't allowed another one and the ones the neighbours had were "obviously stolen!" Aibu to not see why I can't have another one. And before any one suggests I recycle more I do I recycle everything that can be and I have no car to go to a tip.

I assume you crush/folder all boxes flat in the recycling bin?
Large boxes can be flattened and left out for pickup on that day. No cardboard should go in your domestic bin.

What else is going into it, that is not recyclable, that fills it so quickly?

The kids toys?? Confused. how often do you buy your DC toys?

RNBrie · 11/02/2018 17:47

Interesting thing about recycling food waste. Once you've been doing it for a while it starts to feel really uncomfortable to put food waste in the black bin.

I also thought it would be gross but it's fine and I physically twitch when I see people put food waste in a black bin now, urgh!!!

FartyMcLetFly · 11/02/2018 18:02

How much food waste do MNers have that they need a separate food waste bin?!?!

I could fit in one small carrier bag the amount of stuff I throw from my fridge after a big shop (once a fortnight at a push?) and apart from that I don't throw ANY food in the bin Confused

and as for filling the general waste bin in 4 days frig me I'm lucky if I fill it in a week Hmm

IncyWincyGrownUp · 11/02/2018 18:03

Even if you bought a new black bin here, the binmen wouldn’t take it. They know which houses have permission for two.

Wolfiefan · 11/02/2018 18:04

The scheme here is that they ask you to separate food waste and you are given a bin for that, a black rubbish bin, green for plastics etc and a box for cardboard.
Many areas now take food waste separately.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 11/02/2018 18:05

Farty the good bins here are about a foot and a half tall, and for houses that don’t have a garden bin. Other houses have to put their food waste in the garden waste bin, and the bags get fished out at the other end. The city is mainly brambles, I doubt many bags make it to the recycling centre intact!

ThisLittleKitty · 11/02/2018 18:05

No I don't crush the boxes? Didn't realise I was meant to. The food waste bin is food/garden waste so not just a full bin for food it's for garden waste aswell.

well obviously you crush the boxes if you want them take up less space Confused

BarbaraofSevillle · 11/02/2018 18:07

I would assume that food waste includes vegetable peelings, chicken carcasses, prawn and egg shells, that sort of thing, as well as bad food?

We don't have a separate bin yet, they are trialling it in a couple of areas of our city. I think the bins are quite small and they might not decide it is worth it anyway, because we don't have landfill here, everything that is non recyclable is incinerated, so unless they need to reduce what goes in there, I'm not sure what the advantage is? What do they do with the food waste? We are told that lots of food waste like cooked meat can't be composted.

Sparklingbrook · 11/02/2018 18:07

If you crush the boxes they will take up less room.

dementedpixie · 11/02/2018 18:07

Peelings, eggshells, bones, tea bags, leftovers from plates go in food waste. We seem to throw away a lot of bread and potatoes too. We used to have a small dedicated food waste bin but now have a larger combined garden/ food waste bin

Coulddowithanap · 11/02/2018 18:08

Surely it just makes sense to crush boxes, then you can fit more in!

Also wondering what you could be throwing away, we are a family of 4 and a dog and only fill one black sack a week.

SoupDragon · 11/02/2018 18:09

How much food waste do MNers have that they need a separate food waste bin?!?!

It’s in a separate bin as it’s compsted.

dementedpixie · 11/02/2018 18:09

Of course you break down the boxes! How else would you fit everything in the recycling bin?

ThisLittleKitty · 11/02/2018 18:10

Gonna sound really stupid but I thought the boxes were meant to be in a reasonable condition if they were for recycling.

No I don't crush the boxes? Didn't realise I was meant to.

How on earth did your brain not work out that flattening boxes would make more space in your bin? Do you live with another adult?

Dermymc · 11/02/2018 18:10

😂 😂 😂 you don't crush boxes, in that case no wonder you don't fit anything in!

honeysucklejasmine · 11/02/2018 18:10

The tip in my city is worth s visit OP. You have to drive down a crappy road out of the centre, and pass recycling points for every conceivable material. Eventually, if you keep driving, you'll come to the actual landfill site. Where you can shamefully hand over your non recyclable rubbish.

Makes you think.

FartyMcLetFly · 11/02/2018 18:11

Ah I get it now, food waste and garden/compost - I was being a bit dense and thought people literally had a bin just for food and separate to all the other recycling ones - doh?!!! Blush

BarbaraofSevillle · 11/02/2018 18:11

Boxes are recycled into new paper and cardboard by way of a ginormous papier mache machine. As long as they are fairly clean, they are good to go. Condition not an issue.

Rinoachicken · 11/02/2018 18:11

Its just simple common sense to break up/flatten boxes before they go in the recycle bin?? Likewise stepping on bottles/tins/cans so they also take up less space!

dementedpixie · 11/02/2018 18:12

They will pulp the boxes to recycle them not just reuse them as they are!

kungfupannda · 11/02/2018 18:12

But surely cardboard boxes go in the recycling, not in the bin? I know different areas recycle different things, but I would have thought cardboard recycling would be pretty universal?

What are you actually recycling, OP? And is it just your non recyclable waste that is the problem? In our area, you can ask for as many recycling containers as you need - although you do have to pay for garden waste bins. It's only the black bins that are restricted to one per household.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 11/02/2018 18:14

Ok OP you need to go on your council’s website and read up on what you’re supposed to do with all your waste. This stuff is usually common sense but I think you need to actually go and read it all because the rules can differ from council to council. Go on it, have a good read and even write down the rules and stick it up on your kitchen cupboard/fridge. Then follow them.
