Won't give me another wheelie bin...

Bins here are collected weekly. EVERY Sunday without fail my wheelie bin is full. (There collected Thursday) several times local cats (I believe) have managed to get the bags out the wheelie bin as they are open with the bags on top because they are over flowing. Anyway these cats will rip out all my rubbish so the garden will be covered. I called the council and asked for another wheelie bin as several neighbours have more than one of the same colour top bins. I was told I wasn't allowed another one and the ones the neighbours had were "obviously stolen!" Aibu to not see why I can't have another one. And before any one suggests I recycle more I do I recycle everything that can be and I have no car to go to a tip.

OP can you not just buy another bin? Wheelie bin envy here. Our council don't do wheelie bins, so we had to buy our own. Every Monday morning have to put the black bags out. Our recycling is orange bags and only for paper, card, plastic and tin - no glass or food.

Sparklingbrook · 11/02/2018 18:14

Garden waste here has it's own brown wheelie and is collected weekly but there is an annual charge. No garden waste is accepted any other way.

Rinoachicken · 11/02/2018 18:15

I think the problem the OP has had is that she’s not been flattening/comparing her recycling and so her recycling bin is very rapidly full with unflattened boxes etc.

She then starts putting the excess recycling into her black waste bin as there’s no room in the recycle bin.

VelvetSpoon · 11/02/2018 18:15

Yes, my DC used to love flattening all the boxes and squashing bottles when they were younger. Now they're teenagers I have to do it myself!

Does anyone else not get a garden waste collection? We have to take our to the tip or pay extra each year. I would compost ours but we've had rats in the garden before and I know they love a compost heap...

Spikeyball · 11/02/2018 18:15

You should be able to manage with 1 bin a week. The majority of our waste is nappies ( for an older child) but even with that, the bin is rarely full.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 11/02/2018 18:15

I suspect you aren’t sorting your waste any near as properly as you think you are.

How does an adult get through life not knowing that is a bloody good idea to crush rubbish down, especially cardboard boxes, to maximise space in the bin?

SluttyButty · 11/02/2018 18:18

demented we recycle all food waste you’ve said, really makes a difference to putting it in the general bin. Although an entire chicken carcass nearly fills the entire indoor caddy

We used to have a dedicated food waste bin that got collected weekly (it was tiny though). Now it is a combined garden/ food waste larger bin with fortnightly collection

RandomUsernameHere · 11/02/2018 18:22

Are you sure they won't take extra recycling that won't fit in the bin? Our council does, but for rubbish will only take what fits in the bin (with the lid closed).

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 11/02/2018 18:23

When I was in primary school our school won a can crusher as part of an eco schools competition. Every week the P7s were given jobs and everyone wanted to do the can crushing. It was the best job ever Grin

WeAllHaveWings · 11/02/2018 18:24

Gonna sound really stupid but I thought the boxes were meant to be in a reasonable condition if they were for recycling.

Hmm I am speechless...............

spiney · 11/02/2018 18:26

Farty - we do have a separate compost bin for food waste. It's different to our bin for green garden waste.

And like I say it's generally 2 bags a day. These are small green caddy bags. That's food waste as in peelings, egg shells, bones, rinds, tea bags, coffee grounds, carcasses, cores, scrapings.Generally cook from scratch and the bag fills up! It's not food I'm throwing away.

I just spat tea all over my laptop screen. Oh, OP, you need to warn people before saying things like that!

Medeci · 11/02/2018 18:27

Ah I get it now, food waste and garden/compost - I was being a bit dense and thought people literally had a bin just for food and separate to all the other recycling ones - doh?!!!

We have a bin just for food, a small caddy for the kitchen and it gets emptied into a bigger one that's outside for collection.
Surprising how food waste mounts up, banana skins, meat bones, chicken carcasses, veg peelings, fish heads and tails, stuff that's gone off or spoiled. Loads of things you couldn't put in a garden compost bin.

Ok well no need to be so rude! Won't bother ask for help/advice in future will just buy an extra bin off amazon.

While I’m finding it difficult to take on board that someone doesn’t understand that they have to crush up the recycling to optimise space, given that you have said some of the flats have to share one bin between two it seems quite likely that other people are using your bin (though again this is something I would definitely notice). Get a lock, it will be cheaper than buying another bin and less antisocial (just imagine what would happen if the whole town decided they were going to buy an extra bin).

spiney · 11/02/2018 18:30

RNBrie - just like you it makes me wince when food waste goes into a regular black bin now. I have been totally re programmed.

TheCaptainsCat · 11/02/2018 18:30

I have a fussy toddler, lots of food waste. I ordered a food waste bin from the council and my black bin is never full anymore. Food waste adds up to a lot, recycle it!!

You’ve actually had loads of advice. No need to say thanks or anything. Hmm

TheCaptainsCat · 11/02/2018 18:32

Why buy an extra bin? They won't empty it for you!
