To ask what time your DC go to bed?

My 6 YO DD is in bed by 7:30 pm with lights off and asleep by 8 pm at the latest. She is in year 1 and according to her teacher 7:30 is late as bedtime for her. What time do/did your DC of similar age go to bed?

DS2 goes to bed at 7.15 because he gets up at 6.15. It all depends when your DD gets up.

sirfredfredgeorge · 10/02/2018 22:03

MerryOldGoat DD had the same, now in year 2, no earlier bed times, and sleep time generally got later, the 9pm bed time is all about a break for us, she reads, makes up stories, or draws and similar.

When she's reading a particularly interesting to her book, she can push sleep to midnight, but will generally self regulate with an earlier sleep the next night and certainly still wakes roughly the same time.

Believeitornot · 10/02/2018 22:06

There's a window of sleep opportunity with ours. If we miss it then they get hyper and stay up too late.

So we aim for lights out by 7.30 but they could do with the odd 645 lights out. In the holidays they sleep longer!

kaytee87 · 10/02/2018 22:08

I think it's very difficult for parents to even get young kids to bed early enough tbh, if both parents are working full time, that can mean not getting in til 6pm then there's dinner and homework.
If teachers want kids to get more sleep then they shouldn't give out homework during the week Grin

Sorry op, when you said tired I assumed you meant ready for bed tired. Tbh if she's asleep before 8 and wakes naturally at 7 there doesn't really seem to be a problem.

Gymwidow · 10/02/2018 22:08

6 year old 7pm ish, 8 year old 730pm ish. If tired I send them earlier.

Saw a great panorama about sleep which said (paraphrased) that the thing that affects academic performance most is sleep deprivation. Always amazes me in this competitive parenting era that we try so hard in so many ways to enrich and enhance our kids and yet the thing that might give your child the edge is as simple as an hour or two more of sleep. I see shattered kids every day who would benefit from a tougher parent insisting on bedtime being bedtime (and mornings not starting at ridiculous o clock) and not letting their kids rule the roost. They and their GCSE/a level results would thank them for it.

And I had terrible sleepers who needed an awful lot of training, taking back to bed, etc. I know it’s hard. But it’s worth it, for everyone. I know a mum whose 9 year old still wake her up at 5am, on weekends too, and i really wonder why she doesn’t just grow a pair.

FingersCrossedHard · 10/02/2018 22:10

Ds7 in bed at 7.45pm and ds10 in bed by 8pm. Both then get to read until lights out at 8.30.

Whisperingwinds · 10/02/2018 22:11

kaytee I didn’t explain myself too well 😂 and hear hear about less homework

That’s a whole another thread !

DD is 6 (Y1) and in bed 7.30pm, lights out after story about 7.45pm

DS is 8 (Y4) and in bed by 7.45pm and reads until about 8.15pm.

DS wakes up naturally around 6.30am, I have to wake DD at 6.30am as we need to be up that early for me to get to work on time.

I'd prefer them to be in bed a bit earlier given how early they get up, but we don't get home until 6.30pm so we rarely manage it.

IamAporcupine · 10/02/2018 22:12

6 yo DS goes to bed at 8:30-9 and wakes up at 8am

GetShitDone · 10/02/2018 22:12

Usually by 4am if Facebook is anything to go by Grin

Baby at 7pm, preschoolers at 7.30, Yr 1 and Yr 3 at 8pm.
They are all up at 7am and seem to get enough sleep.

ThisLittleKitty · 10/02/2018 22:22

Can't believe someone's kids are in bed for 4pm. What time is dinner? 3?

mumof2sarah · 10/02/2018 22:41

DD2 (5 in yr1) goes to bed at 7 and is asleep by 7:15 and sleeps through til 7:30. She's been in that routine since 3 weeks old (obvs still woke for bottles until 9 weeks when she started to sleep through) weekends it's usually 8pm and she's straight to sleep, awake at the same but is slightly a bit grumpy lol.

DD1 (14) goes into her room at 7:30 for homework/reading/watching TV and usually falls asleep about 9. She had the same routine as my little one until she turned 8 then bedtime was 8 until she went to high school, she's set her own bedtime now. She must just be sleepy by that time.

formerbabe · 10/02/2018 22:50

Dc1...9 (10 in a few weeks) in bed at 8 ish...reads for 15/20mins...then lights off by 8.30.

Dc2... between 7-7.30 depending on how tired she is.

Dc1 would stay up pretty late if we let him but would be an exhausted grumpy nightmare the next day!

suzy2b · 10/02/2018 22:50

9 year to bed at 8 up at 7.30 5 year 7 wakes when the other gets up or sometimes have to be gotten up at 8

ImMissHannigan · 10/02/2018 23:12

I really need to get a grip on bedtime in my house after reading all these. It's fair to say I only have a slight idea of when mine go to sleep (they go to bed but don't sleep) so 14 DD is upstairs for 9.30 but definitely not asleep before 11pm. DD11 is upstairs for 9.30 and asleep for 10.3-11. DSS 8 in his room most of the evening as he plays x-box (against my wishes) and asleep for around 10pm. These are all rough estimates as we are usually in bed for 9pm ish watching tv. Some nights we have heard doors opening at 1am as one of them has just decided to stay up. If they won't sleep they won't sleep. It's been the bane of my life for years. I don't get it, I would sleep for a lot longer given the opportunity!
DD1 is fully dependent on what naps and daytime activities but generally 8pm-8am most days.

needmysleep75 · 10/02/2018 23:32

Mine are way older now but throughout primary from reception to year 6 they were in bed for 8pm awake at 7am. If I put them to bed earlier they just woke up earlier and I didn't want to be up at 6am!! Year 7 8.30pm, year 8/9 9pm, year 10 9.30pm and year 11 10pm. Weekends and holidays always a bit later. I'm not getting at anyone but I do not understand people who don't make sure their teenagers are getting enough sleep, they are like toddlers if they get overtired. I even told them during 6th form that they had to be lights out by 11pm, my house my rules.

Notso · 10/02/2018 23:38

DD 17 goes to bed when she wants but usually is asleep by 10:30 on days when she's got college/work in the morning. She gets migraines and lack of sleep is a trigger.
DS1 13 goes to bed between 9:30 and 10 he'd probably stay up later but struggles in the morning of he does.
DS2 7 and DS3 5 go to bed somewhere between 7:30 and 8:30 on school nights.

Offyougo · 10/02/2018 23:42

Between 8.30/9.30
They'r between 2 and 10 years old.

liz70 · 10/02/2018 23:46

DD1, 18, at uni, nuff said. DD2, 17, up to her. DD3, 8, between 8.30 and 8.45 on school nights, up at 7 a.m alarm., 8.45 to 9 p.m. weekends and holidays, gets up when she wakes up.

disneydatknee · 10/02/2018 23:54

My 9yo DS goes to bed at 8:30 and my 2yo DD goes to bed at 7pm. I think it depends on the child though. When DS was 2 he was in bed by 6 because he was tired by 6. But my DD who is now 2 isn’t tired by that time.

DarkJustBeforeDawn · 11/02/2018 06:39

When do children going to bed at 4pm eat their meals? 3 meals and 2 snacks per day, leaving adequate time after food before bed? Wow, I'm pretty amazed at this scheduling.....

NotAChristmasCakePop · 11/02/2018 06:42

5 year old in year one - we aim to have him asleep between 7:30-8

DarkJustBeforeDawn · 11/02/2018 06:43

Oops.... meant to include that my 20 month old sleeps from 8/8:30pm to 7:30/8:30am, with a nap from around 11am to 1:30/2pm.
