To say smoking does look cool?

Yes, I know inhaling thousands upon thousands of cancerous chemicals definitely isn't cool!

But there's something about some people lighting up a cig and looking into the distance that looks rather cool and 'suave' to me

I always picture having a deep conversation with a mysteriously handsome but dark horse of a person, looking far into the distance as they respond to my dilemma "That's life, Soph" or some other talk that included clever sayings that I can never think to use at the right moment.

It looks cool.

My executive assistant aunty use to look very classy sitting with her legs crossed and smoking a cig, whilst listening to my dilemmas

I'm with you, Ifnot. I miss smoking dreadfully. I go out of my way to catch a glorious lungful of fresh cigarette smoke. Giving up was like losing an old friend. If I went to live in a country more tobacco tolerant I'd start again in a heartbeat. After all you've got to die of something.

Fri morning I saw a 14/15 yo girl in her school uniform crouch by the side of the busy road, put her belongings on the floor in the dirt, dig a cigarette out of her bag, light it then pick up her stuff and carry on walking to school with it haning out of her mouth.
Absolutely nothing about that looked cool.

My uncle used to think it was cool.

Now that his emphysema is bad he has to go upstairs on his bottom he doesn't think it's cool.

I agree. I don't know why it looks cool but it just does.

What's not cool is the health implications, the bloody cost, standing outside in the freezing cold, clock watching til your next fag break.... I fucking loved smoking, but glad I no longer do it! I probably didn't look cool, I'd have looked cavalier about my health and as if I had money to literally burn. I would have stunk too.

If a person looks cool smoking they would look cool without it. On the flip side if someone doesn't look remotely cool, a cigarette won't help them look cool.

So YABU. It's not the smoking, it's the person doing it.

Personally I think smoking looks horrible and I'm an on/off smoker (quit fully three/four weeks ago though and have committed to myself not to have one for the rest of the year!)

Not cool. I work in the dental field and telling a thirty year old smoker with perfect teeth that those teeth are loose and that they are at risk of losing them is heartbreaking.

The only people who do it nowadays are invariably, um ... pasty, overweight and unhealthy looking (people who don't give a shit about themselves, basically), so now smoking has become synonymous with them. Definitely not cool.

Not sure I agree, nicotine is a known appetite suppressant and a lot of people do it to stay thin, or are afraid they’ll gain weight if they try to give up.

I was pondering this whilst driving the other day. Or rather I was pondering how uncool vaping looks with those large clunky vaping things.

There is something kind of cool about a thing white cigarette. I grew up when it actually was cool though so that may colour my view. I’ve never actually smoked myself though and have always thought the smell is rank.

I think it can look cool and sexy. I find risk-takers and rebels quite appealing, because I am completely the opposite.

I don't smoke, and I know smoking won't make me cool.

Oh and I am joining the Golden Age Smokers Club if I am allowed to join! I am aiming for 85.

My Grandad smoked around a 100 a day for roughly 40 years. One day he just decided he wasn't going to do it anymore and gave up. Just like that. He lived to be almost 93 and died peacefully of old age a couple of years ago. If I get to be his age, I am definitely starting again.

And before anyone starts, I am aware he was lucky.

It only looks cool if a cool person is doing it. Do you think it looks cool when you see a wrinkly old man with a beer belly doing it? Nope thought not.

LoniceraJaponica no never been to Barnsley, but I’ve known a few thin smokers. Re loosening teeth, what smoking does do is interefere with the absorption of vital nutrients from your food, especially vitamins c and d and calcium, so yes I suppose it could loosen your teeth.

I just came back from France and was surprised how many people smoke there and how they are not the same demographic as here. All well to do stylish people.

I love the smell and try to walk behind someone smoking to get a big sniff.

The trouble is op those people who you think look cool smoking look just as cool without a cigarette. It isn’t the cigarette or smoking that makes them cool.

I'm an ex smoker and I used to be embarrassed about smoking publicly because I thought it looked nasty.

Maybe when I was a teenager I thought I was cool but certainly not as an adult.

Yellow teeth, wrinkles around mouth, nicotine stained fingers, foul smelling breath and clothes, phlegmy coughs and huddling in a doorway freezing trying to smoke a cigarette through chattering teeth is definitely not cool. Pitiful really. :-(

It does look cool. There's no logic to it, so people listing all the many and serious drawbacks to smoking are wasting their time.

But like fedoras, leather trousers and Peaky Blinder haircuts... it makes the cool cooler and the sad sadder

Smoking does not make you look any cooler. If you look cool when smoking, you are a cool looking person.
