To say smoking does look cool?

Yes, I know inhaling thousands upon thousands of cancerous chemicals definitely isn't cool!

But there's something about some people lighting up a cig and looking into the distance that looks rather cool and 'suave' to me

I always picture having a deep conversation with a mysteriously handsome but dark horse of a person, looking far into the distance as they respond to my dilemma "That's life, Soph" or some other talk that included clever sayings that I can never think to use at the right moment.

It looks cool.

My executive assistant aunty use to look very classy sitting with her legs crossed and smoking a cig, whilst listening to my dilemmas
I just want to put it out there that I've never so much as taken a puff of a ciggy

All smokers know what it does to them. Even though old ones. I'm in my 50s. The "I didn't know it was that bad for you"/"we all die of something " lines don't work any more. Seen it. Heard it. Watched people die of it.
My late mum was tough in every way apart from the fags that killed her.
If you still smoke now you are an addict and you know what you have to do. If my mum could give up, anyone can.

If you have kids and you still smoke they will watch you suffer and die. As I had to watch my mum. Do you want that?
I know you might get hit buy a bus one day or whatever. This, the death from smoking, is horrible and avoidable. Avoid it.

@gussy of course ur right but like u also said my kids will have to watch me suffer and die anyway, just like I suffered and watched my aunty die of breast cancer when I was 13 and my great grandmother wen I was 17 and her sole carer neither ever smoked, drank, or did drugs ever and yet I still watched them die a long painful death.

Even if you think it 'looks' cool, it still stinks to high heaven and ruins your skin and teeth.

I think it can look cool on tv. I've just been watching the man in the high castle where everyone smokes. The reality of smokers freezing on the streets is not the same. Something really uncouth about walking whilst smoking no idea why.

No it doesn't. It really, really doesn't. It looks revolting and it makes me want to gag thinking about it.

Because dying from lung cancer isn't funny or light hearted. Being bereaved by it isn't nice or cool either.

gussy I lost my grandad because of his smoking ways. My aunty now has cancer that isn't smoking related as such but of course no one knows the ins and outs

If we only kept the bad in mind 24/7 and didn't find anything at all a little 'lighter', time goes on and life would just eat you up as a whole.

I get where you are coming from in a way. On a visit to Paris saw lots of goodlooking, well dressed types smoking and they do look coolish. Don't see as many cool types smoking on U.K highstreets though!

I don't think it's cool whatsoever. When I see someone lighting up in an old film I can smell that horrible reek you get from cigarettes too 😷😷

Wine isn't good for you in large quantities but it doesn't line your lungs with nicotine and tar or pollute the air.

Trouble is an elegant smoker in a film who lights a cigarette to puntuate their emotional state does look elegant.

The reality to addicted smoking is that ash gets everywhere, lit ends drop off and burn through fabrics, it hurts your respiratory system and costs a lot of money and is not very glamourous.

Just looks that way when you see someone pensive in YSL elegantly lighting a cigarette at a time of crisis.

It "being cool" is what got people addicted in the first place.

No, yorrick but one glass a day can lead to liver scarring, cardiomyopathy and a host of other health problems. I think both are unhealthy habits. MN just seems to have a "woo go booze" outlook that I find baffling when compared to smoking.

I think the fact op doesn't smoke herself indicates that she doesn't find it cool enough to actually take it up.

Only in films and on TV because you don't have to put up with the stink of smoke, their bad breath, their yellow fingers or their racking cough

I did think it used to look cool and I used to smoke but now I just think it looks a bit Waynetta slob....nothing cool about it.

Nah I saw a woman walking along the street holding a cig in her mouth not lit up yet as she was faffing about in her pockets. Holding it with just her lips. She looked so stupid and i think She thought she looked like the bees knees. But she just didn't! It smells so awful too. I can't understand it.
