No need to go further into your reasoning if you don't want to but this has always a been curious issue to me and came up today with one of my colleagues. She is a feminist by how she described her beliefs but doesn't actually adopt the term.

Its not a need to call you anything, it's just what the word means. Its objective! Like if you have blonde hair, you are blonde. You can't say you don't like the word blonde and you're something else.

Roomba · 10/02/2018 12:02

YES. Radical Feminist. After recent news such as the Oxfam workers abusing vulnerable women in places like Haiti, am practically a Separatist now!

NavyGold · 10/02/2018 12:03

If the word feminist was limited to just the bare bones of the dictionary definition, there wouldn't be different categories (libfem, radfem, terf etc) so I think we all know that identifying as a feminist is about much more than believing in equal rights for women.

kaytee87 · 10/02/2018 12:04

@NavyGold it's just a factual statement. A word for someone who believes in equal rights for women.

BusterTheBulldog · 10/02/2018 12:04

No

willothewisp17 · 10/02/2018 12:18

Was going to say no, but of course I want equal rights for women, so yes.
Just not to the extreme!

TheRagingGirl · 10/02/2018 12:18

YES

Of course. Wasn’t it Rebecca West who said that she was a feminist because she had views that distinguished her from a doormat?

BusyBeez99 · 10/02/2018 12:19

No

NavyGold · 10/02/2018 12:20

If it's simply a factual statement then nobody on this thread that answered yes would take any issue with those that answered no surely? I think it's disengenous to mould the word feminism into whatever fits an argument as we see that often with feminism. In this instance it's a factual statement, in the next arguement it's a movement, in the next arguement it's a political belief. So if I chose to say "no", my belief can be discarded because I believe in the statement of fact when it's patently eveident that feminism is so much more than just the statement of fact.
I have no issue with feminism. My saying no doesn't automatically mean I'm against feminism or feminists. My saying no is because my personal life experiences and the studying that I've done have lead me to a place where I don't identify as a feminist. Surely that's just as valid as the experiences that have lead the majority of women here to answer yes?

GodShaveTheQueen · 10/02/2018 12:27

No.

catgirl1976 · 10/02/2018 12:27

Yes of course

flirtygirl · 10/02/2018 12:40

I believe women and men are equal.

I believe someone with a penis can never be a woman.

But here on mumsnet, ive been told im not a feminist as i don't believe a woman has a right to an abortion in all and any circumstances. I dont believe any man or any woman has the right to terminate an unborn childs life.

So. Am i a feminist? I would say yes but mumsnet says no.

windchimesabotage · 10/02/2018 12:43

flirtygirl well I dont agree with you. But it doesnt mean you arent a feminist! Beliefs and views can sometimes contradict each other or partially cancel each other out... no one is JUST feminist. For example im sure you can consider yourself a feminist but also be a Christian which might lead you to have views on abortion like yours.

windchimesabotage · 10/02/2018 12:45

I mean im a feminist and I do believe someone with a penis could be a woman. And I certainly would not accept anyone telling me that im any less of a feminist because of that.

Lambzig · 10/02/2018 12:49

Yes

Bearberry · 10/02/2018 12:52

Yes.

I was talking to DH (who considers himself a feminist) about woman only short lists recently. We were watching the TED talk on everyday sexism and the stats on how under represented women are in politics, industry, law, science and pretty much all ‘professional roles’. Specifically how 60% of chemistry undergrads are women but only 5% of chemistry professors are female...

DH couldn’t understand why, just assumed that the jobs went to to best candidates or that perhaps women weren’t interested in those roles. He had never sat and thought why. Why women account for 52% of population and are more successful in education and yet are still hugely underrepresented in important decision making roles. I can only assume because he had never needed to.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 10/02/2018 12:53

What's the extreme of equal rights?
