to get annoyed when total strangers touch/stroke my baby without asking?

ds is nearly 6 months & fair enough he is gorgeous (not that I'm biased or anything) but why do total strangers feel the need to have a grab at him when he's in his buggy? Doesn't matter where we are, on the bus, in a shop, whatever, there's someone stroking his cheek or grabbing his hand. I see their manky fingernails or nicotine-yellow fingers & shudder!
I know babies are cute & soft & cuddly but I'd never dream of touching someone else's baby without at least asking first.
So, AIBU?

Kerry, you seem really aggro.

I'm going to avoid you from now on.

Spidermama · 01/05/2007 10:31

LOL OO. It takes me all my strength not to bite those fat pink legs at times.

nailpolish · 01/05/2007 10:32

DD1 even got £1 coins in her pram .

She had that special something about her, though, always has .

I did put them in her bank, though.

Save up our coppers and get a tenner or so every year for them.

Not much, but a little something.

expatinscotland · 01/05/2007 10:33

I like their fat hamster cheeks.

OOoooooo.

And their necks.

I was quite unprepared for peoples' reactions to my dd when she was born and indeed for the first few months but quickly wised up and was at the ready if they tried to touch her. Yes these women looked 'clean' but there were some who were heavy smokers (stank with nicotined stained fingers - ugh) or covered in scent which gave me a sore throat. I found it unbelievable actually that people just didn't think about whether it was appropriate or not.

I have just read a few posts which are highly unpleasant. I would like to say that in the first few months I think babies are more vulnerable and some strangers pawing is inappropriate. Stopping to admire is one thing, breathing all over a small baby in a pram is quite another.

oliveoil · 01/05/2007 10:34

at my M&B group, any new mum just sits there whilst her newborn is passed around

she doesn't have a choice (!!), and appreciates the break to have a cup of tea in peace

I suppose she could count the number of snotty toddlers hanging over her precious bundle, or broody mothers getting too close

but THAT IS WHAT BABIES ARE FOR, enjoying, they are so precious imo and need to be held and not stuffed in a car seat hidden away

expatinscotland · 01/05/2007 10:35

Tell the truth, naily, did you go and buy coffee in Starbuck's with the coins?

WanderingTrolley · 01/05/2007 10:35

Rolls of fat where one day will be wrists.

Dimpled knuckles.

Luminous cheeks...

Oh that's it.

I will now have to go out immediately to squeeze a baby.

oliveoil · 01/05/2007 10:35

lol at breathing over a baby

oh deary deary me

nailpolish · 01/05/2007 10:35

i thinki will now ask mothers of babies beforehand if i can squeeze their chubby bits

expatinscotland · 01/05/2007 10:35

Siblings are grubby, too, especially when they've been at nursery or school and come home and want to fondle the baby.

Spidermama · 01/05/2007 10:36

I like pink dimples. On shoulders or hands and, of course, on cheeks.

Oh no. I'm getting broody. I'd better go and look at a thread about difficulty at school to throw me off the scent.

nailpolish · 01/05/2007 10:36

certainly not expat, it went straight in the child trust fund

expatinscotland · 01/05/2007 10:36

DD2 has fat hamster cheeks.

All are welcome to stroke them!

She boaked all over her cot last night, too.

DD1 gave her something grotty.

noddyholder · 01/05/2007 10:36

I don't think I have ever asked before touching a baby but I may think twice now although I agree fat pink legs are irresistible

nailpolish · 01/05/2007 10:36

me too spidey, wait up...

expatinscotland · 01/05/2007 10:37

Aw, Spider, jsut think of their round, soft bellies.

nailpolish · 01/05/2007 10:38

their jiggly bum cheeks as they get out of the bath and run away from you giggling...

oliveoil · 01/05/2007 10:38
