Bengal has scratched DD friend

Long story short my DS had a few friends over at weekend and one of them pulled my 1 year old Bengal's tail and she too took a little swipe at them. I had to pretend I was less annoyed than I was (as you always do with kids that aren't yours) but just checked they weren't hurt and thought nothing more of it. Today I have had said parents very annoyed on the phone demanding this was unacceptable and they wanted to report it, I was clearly very annoyed aswell and it got a bit heated from there.

I don't think I am but AIBU ? All the kids were clearly told to leave Annie (Bengal) alone and I didn't overreact when they didn't. Can't help that feel this is generation snowflake when things like this happen no injuries occured.

I have 5 bengals
TBH Any cat would do the same
YANBU

MrsCrabbyTree · 06/02/2018 22:39

Had a housemate who just had to pat my cute fluffball cat even after I told him she was timid and to let her come to him. I was ignored, my cat's warning body language was ignored and he got scratched. He then said if the cat scratched again he would pick my cat up and throw it across the room. Housemate didn't like my reply but he never touched her again!

Crocusqueen · 06/02/2018 22:39

God I hope it's actually a tiger

ZebraOwl · 06/02/2018 22:52

Well that's someone seriously confused by the new[ish] Halifax ads, isn't it? How long do you think it'll take them to realise that Officer Dibble does not have jurisdiction in the real world...?

I hope your cat is feeling ok. Poor puss.

WalkingUpTheMountain · 06/02/2018 23:06

This child aggravated your cat. Two years old is old enough to know not to pull/prod/hurt animals and I'm guessing your DS and his friends are older than this. The child could have potentially hurt your cat and is in the wrong. I would ignore the parents.

One of my cats is absolutely lovely but does scratch. You can be stroking him, pull your hand away and he will scratch you playfully. It's a cat scratch, it hurts but there's no malice meant by it. Most cats scratch. If my child came home with a cat scratch, I would ask them why, remind them that some cats scratch and that would be the end of it.

Bengals sometimes have a bad reputation but I've not met an unsociable cat yet (although we have a tame f3).our vet who was South African used to hold ours at arms length and say "this is a dangerous animal" which couldn't have been further from the truth. Softest cat ever. Mind you, any cat we've had would defend themselves in this situation.

OfaFrenchmind2 · 06/02/2018 23:19

When I was a kid and I would get scratched by the neighborhood semi feral cats (happened a lot, I adore cats and was very daft, no tail pulling though), my mum would just tell me that it served me right, annoying the street gods with my basic floundering humaneness... Grin Cats are worshipped in this family, they can do no wrong.

Who the hell wants a "pet" that does this?

I will never understand cat lovers.

NoSquirrels · 06/02/2018 23:33

annoying the street gods with my basic floundering humaneness

Another gem!

FastWindow · 06/02/2018 23:36

I've got three cats. One of them is zero tolerant. You learn to live with it. You don't love them any less because they are non strokey.

NoSquirrels · 06/02/2018 23:39

frank the most reactive & unpredictable (to other people) of my cats has been sat next to me purring like a train for the last 15 minutes as long as I scratch her ears in just the right way?

Who wouldn’t want a cat?

YANBU apart from the “generation snowflake” bit.

On one hand their DD came home injured and they weren’t there to see what happened and probably didn’t get an accurate story. IF the child is very young they may not understand. Personally I would have told the parent immediately when they were picked up / dropped off what had happened and why (especially as cat scratches can be nasty).

NotSureThisIsWhatIWant · 06/02/2018 23:43

Report to whom?

Frankly, IME if you invite several young kids at the same time there will always be one pestering the house pet. And by young I mean under 10s.

I know it is not the cat’s fault but I always put my dogs away to protect them from those kids who have not been thought how to be kind to animals.

gillybeanz · 06/02/2018 23:51

I wouldn't have animals around other people's children tbh, especially knowing what kids are like.
take the chance with your own kids, but not others
YABU for leaving them together.
Parent is reporting you to whom though, a bit OTT.
I would be a bit pissed off if mine had been scratched by a cat oo.

TitaniasCloset · 06/02/2018 23:55

Don't invite this child back again, the parents are batshit.

FastWindow · 06/02/2018 23:57

Yep cats, are animals. Shouldn't be allowed around kids.
Or, kids who can't be told not to pull a cats tail shouldn't be allowed around animals.
I'm on the cats side. If you get scratched - learn your lesson.

GabsAlot · 07/02/2018 00:02

tell them you'll report them for animal abuse see how they like that

sleepyhead · 07/02/2018 00:07

They should definitely "report" it and record any response for our entertainment

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 07/02/2018 00:32

Apart from Can't help that feel this is generation snowflake, YANBU.

Jb291 · 07/02/2018 00:37

Serves the little brat right. Obnoxious child should not have pulled your poor cats tail. Brats parents are batshit and should be ignored

madein1995 · 07/02/2018 06:05

What utter crap from the parents, ignore it. Now the child had learnt a lesson - when someone tells you not to do something you listen, or you could get hurt

I am not a cat fan at all, but the child was in the wrong. Lesson learned.

Tiddlywinks63 · 07/02/2018 07:03

I presume they'll be suing you for damages too?
thank goodness my DCs grew up in a different generation
