I want some opinions.
My sister is getting married this year in June, we're all very excited. Our mom, the Mother Of The Bride, is thinking of wearing this dress. The replica dress Bella Swan wears on her wedding day (but not during the actual wedding) to my sister's wedding.
I said as it's a very light colour and a bit short, it's a little bit bad taste and is pretty much as good as wearing white. My Mom says as it's cream it's not actually white it's a reasonable choice.
I said I'd ask you lovely people to make the decision for us, one way or the other.
Do you think it's appropriate for the Mother Of The Bride to wear this to her daughter's wedding?

@Fekko

I love Chi chi. I'm wearing this to my daughters wedding in June. You can buy them in Debenhams.

I'm wearing these with it. Just need to find a shawl/bolero

Lovely - it’s a nice length too.

user1471443504 · 05/02/2018 20:23

Colour aside it's not very mother of the bride I don't think . A bit plain and boring.

JoeyMaynardssolidlump · 05/02/2018 20:23

That’s very nice too Blacktea

GreenTulips · 05/02/2018 20:25

Coast have some lovely dresses -

practicallyperfectmummy · 05/02/2018 20:28

@Somanyshoes beautiful dress you look fab! Where is it from? Thanks

NotAnotherEmma · 05/02/2018 20:34

It's inappropriate but mostly because if your sister is old enough to get married then your Mom is too old to look good in that dress.

GreenTulips · 05/02/2018 20:39

This would tiebin with dusty pink

The Mum is the same age as Eva Mendes, hardly old.

Blackteadrinker77 · 05/02/2018 20:46

Thanks @fekko @joeymaynardssolidlump I need to find something to go with it now.

Every time Debenhams have a sale on I rush to buy all the chi chi in my size. Such good quality for around £70 a dress. I think they are nicer than most of the £160 dresses.

For anyone looking they have some 70% of at the moment. Bargain!

Doobigetta · 05/02/2018 21:12

Pretty fucking pathetic to use the term "mutton" for a 43 year old.

OP, I agree with others that that dress is just not special enough. The shift style would be ok in a print or a really lovely colour that really suited her, but in the cream it's very dull. And Jacques Vert is for 70 year olds.

MsHopey · 05/02/2018 23:09

mistaking the MOB for the B in a casual cream-coloured dress seems unlikely, so the colour alone isn't an issue

I thought wearing white or Cream just wasn't the done thing. I didn't realise it was because you'd be mistaken for the bride. I know what my sister is wearing, and no, my mom will not be confused with her. I just thought it was some kind of etiquette rule to not go with white, cream or ivory

@practicallyperfectmummy Thank you Smile It's Herve Leger (RIP) from Net-a-porter, that one not available anymore, but there are always other similar styles in his range.

Cavender · 06/02/2018 05:34

I mostly think your Mum could just do much better.

That dress isn’t very flattering. It doesn’t look special or elegant.

It’s really blah and I don’t think (as evidenced by the picture) will photograph well.

She’s Mother of the Bride. If she’s only early 40s she should be wearing something that’s a knock out.

Not a something that resembles a creased white bin bag.

Gruach · 06/02/2018 05:51

Bloody hell - the sheer unthinking, patronising ageism here is staggering.

Too short? Too old to wear that? She's 40, not 60 or 70 so can wear what she likes? Jacques fucking Vert?

D'you know I feel actually incandescent with horror and fury. I'm older than the OP's mother - I've never even stepped into most of the dreadful, stereotyping, cliched, "middle aged" shops you're suggesting. (And neither has my own mother.) Thank the Lord that none of you get to dress me.

The dress isn't terribly celebratory - might look good with something else in a richer fabric - silk or velvet or whatever, and some colour.

Mother of the bride doesn't mean style free zone for the should be dead ...

iBiscuit · 06/02/2018 05:53

I think MOTB outfits are quite often pale, aren't they? It's too much of a work dress though, as others have said already.

Karen Millen would be worth a look. I'm far too tight to shop there normally mind Grin

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 06/02/2018 20:52

blacktea i love your hat. I can't find one in the right colour, my shoes and bag are a minty green and I can only find hats in pink, cream or silver.

Jassmells · 06/02/2018 21:07

Looks very dull to me. Blink and you miss it. Depends if she wants to stand out a little or shrink into the background?

Condici is the best brand for Mother of the Bride outfits. You'll be talking £700+ though.

Huntinginthedark · 06/02/2018 21:11

Blimey. Give her a fucking break
It’s just a very ordinary dress. And if she wants to wear an ordinary dress that’s up to her
What you you prefer! Full Barbara Cartland just to make it obvious she’s the MOTB

iBiscuit · 07/02/2018 07:04

I'm not generally one for age-appropriateness, but OP's mum is twenty years too young for Condici.

Blackteadrinker77 · 07/02/2018 11:04

@andnoneforgretchenweiners

Have you tried Etsy? Don't use the filters just search mint green hat and scroll through.
I find them great for the hard to find items.

Blobby10 · 07/02/2018 11:29

I'm 48 and would wear that dress but with a jacket and hat to dress it up. I prefer straight and simple fitted shift dresses these days - much more flattering than the modern monstrosities with their little bows here and a little peplum there., Dont get me started on the bell sleeves!!!!

Regarding the length - your mum is 43 so its perfectly OK! Actually even if she was 63 or 73 it would be fine! Just above the knee is very flattering to most people

Jassmells · 07/02/2018 23:13

@iBiscuit I'm a fair bit younger than the OP's mum and I'd go condici over a lot of the old lady and run of the mill brands mentioned here (ahem Jacques Vert, Coast I'm looking at you) and if she has the figure for the original dress she'd look amazing in Condici.

TryAgainAndAgain · 07/02/2018 23:41

I can't see anything wrong with the cream dress. I like simple non-fussy dresses especially if it's a casual summery wedding. I find it a bit weird that posters are so hung up about someone else's choice of dress. 🤷🏻‍♀️

beluga425 · 07/02/2018 23:45

I am in my late forties and consider that dress too old and boring for me so fuck off you ageist twats!
The problem isn't the colour, it's just dull and looks like it would crease.
