To silently judge my friend?

I have a friend with a baby who is almost 6 months, we live close to each other and see each other on average a couple of times a week. My friend is an excellent cook and her food is amazing, I have tasted it many times, she has even taught me how to a cook a variety of foods from her heritage! However, she constantly feeds her baby crap. I have seen dc eat a magnum ice cream, a cornetto, a character jelly lollipop covered in sugar, a milky bar for breakfast and 2 packets of cheesy biscuits one after the other. She constantly posts photos of her baby eating these things on social media. A few days ago she told me that her baby doesn't like food without salt and won't eat it unless she adds salt to it first. She is aware of feeding advice and is an intelligent lady so it isn't due to a lack of awareness or education. I am no earth mother myself, I have fed my dc crap in the past but not at such a young age and I do feel awful for judging her but I am worried about her child's health and the eating habits her baby is likely to develop in childhood if she carries on!

A six month old is not eating two packets of cheesy biscuits. Their stomachs aren’t big enough.

DreamyMcDreamy · 04/02/2018 20:21

I didn't say he ate the full magnum, but he was given it to hold and eat.

Ah, okay. I think I see what's going on here; your mate has a bit of a social-media-courting obsession with posing her baby with food in a "look what little Johnny ate today!" type way

Yeah, that's what I was thinking hence my earlier post. It's not always the full picture on there - it's more likely to be "babba eating ice cream today!" #makingmemories Grin
When in reality "babba" held it for a second for photo opportunity, then got it taken away after one little lick they managed to sneak.... Smile

WallaceSimpson · 04/02/2018 20:23

That's nothing my 6 month old can eat a full Vienetta.

Series28 · 04/02/2018 20:27

How is this baby managing to eat biscuit, chocolate and lolipops without teeth? This is not very believable OP.
A taste of icecream isnt the end of the world though

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 04/02/2018 20:28

A Magnum? That's probably bigger than his head! Grin

I think you might have got the wrong end of the (lolly) stick OP as others have said.
He's being given a lick of things to taste maybe. It's not ideal to give a baby a taste for very sugary, salty foods but neither is it a Massive Cause for Concern.

RatRolyPoly · 04/02/2018 20:38

That's nothing my 6 month old can eat a full Vienetta.

A Vienetta? Mate, don't you know how BAD that is for your kid??

Next time make it a strawberry roulade. One of their five a day, innit.

CountessOfStrathearn · 04/02/2018 20:42

"How is this baby managing to eat biscuit, chocolate and lolipops without teeth? This is not very believable OP. "

While I didn't give my DC ice cream at 6mo, they were eating strips of beef, chicken, roast veg etc, all without teeth. Their gums, as anyone who has done BLW will tell you, are pretty tough on their own!

GabsAlot · 04/02/2018 20:45

if youve physically seen all this for yourself i think u need a word with your friend its too much for his sytem

Gwenhwyfar · 04/02/2018 21:03

"Surely ALL countries are known for food?"

Not really. Or at least not all are known positively. American cuisine isn't held in high esteem, for example, even though the burger cafe idea has spread around the world.

Whatshallidonowpeople · 04/02/2018 21:06

I think you'll find each part of America IS known for specific dishes

Eminybob · 04/02/2018 21:13

Um I don’t think burgers are the only food from America Hmm

CanIhavedessertfirst · 04/02/2018 21:19

I'm not sure I completely believe this story. I am, however, led in bed fancying a magnum and some mini cheddars!

Charolais · 04/02/2018 21:21

Gwenhwyfar So you only have been to American fast food joints then?

I’ve lived here in the U.S since the early 70’s and they like to make fun of British food here and I always defend it. I ask them if they know where sandwiches came from, potpies, roast beef etc etc....they always tell me they never thought of that.

MiniAlphaBravo · 04/02/2018 21:26

I think whatshall is being deliberately obtuse and it's obvious what you mean.

If this is true I would certainly be judging as well and quite concerned for the poor baby. Even just a taste of these foods is bad enough plus added salt. I don't know what you can do about it though, maybe just bring up something you read about salt being bad for babies... depends what she's like. Does she take offense easily?

LaurieMarlow · 04/02/2018 21:30

Six month olds eating magnums and cornettos sounds like a load of shit to me. HTH.

Mogginthemog · 04/02/2018 21:30

At 6 months my nephew could honestly eat virtually an adult amount of food. I’ve never seen a baby be able to hold that amount of grub. He did end up 6’5 and 16 st tho. But I used to feed him what his DM left for him and if I wasn’t going fast enough he would grab my hand holding the spoon and try bring it towards his mouth.

Mogginthemog · 04/02/2018 21:32

If your friend is feeding her baby all this high salt high fat and sugar stuff I’d have a talk with her. It’s going to
Cause a lot of harm if it goes on.

LaurieMarlow · 04/02/2018 21:32

American cuisine isn't held in high esteem, for example, even though the burger cafe idea has spread around the world.

What a terrible example. The US has incredible diversity at a regional level.

Haffiana · 04/02/2018 21:39

Bad thread this.

bobstersmum · 04/02/2018 21:41

The cheesy biscuits... with no teeth, at six months old, that would take some time to eat, and most would end up mush on the baby's chin, no? Unless this kid is some sumo superhero I doubt he's eating all that.
Tbh, I hate reading about people silently judging then coming on here to bitch, if you think its not good bloody say something!

LynetteScavo · 04/02/2018 21:53

Is she weaning the same way her mother weaned? Weaning at 12 weeks was normal when I was a baby, and I may actually have been given an ice cream for a treat. But there would have been lots of "normal" food too. Surly the baby isn't only having what you mentioned and is also eating veg?

GerdaLovesLili · 04/02/2018 22:02

🍦Biscuit 🍦

ANother27 · 04/02/2018 22:26

I used to let my ds lick ice cream off my finger when we were on holiday when he was 18 weeks old. Oops. Awful parent ConfusedGrin

CupcakeWithIcing · 05/02/2018 17:45

YANBU to judge her. Poor child. And all the posters saying a baby can't possibly eat so much. My DS was on 2 meals plus 2 puddings and 5 9oz bottled a day at 5mo and was on his third meal of the day at 6mo along with constant snacks. Some babies do have a huge appetite. However I wouldn't dream of feeding him junk food and adding salt to his food that is just fucking disgusting. OP you need to speak to your friend and log it with her HV. A diet so bad will only lead to illness and more bad habits in the future.

I would honestly cringe every time I saw a picture of the baby eating ice cream on Facebook! And if that were one of my friends I'd physically take the ice cream away and replace it with fruit purée. I can't believe that people are still happy to feed babies utter crap knowing the damage it does.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 05/02/2018 17:51

This thread reminds me of the horrible case of the baby who died due to their mother giving them gravy quite a lot. The baby died from salt poisoning. I don't be talking to her and if she didn't stop reporting her to the health visitor. The baby can't stick up for himself

Im pretty sure your talking about the very young baby 3 months ish who was fed normal adult convienance food with no adaptations made for their age and three meals a day with milk reduction.
