To silently judge my friend?

I have a friend with a baby who is almost 6 months, we live close to each other and see each other on average a couple of times a week. My friend is an excellent cook and her food is amazing, I have tasted it many times, she has even taught me how to a cook a variety of foods from her heritage! However, she constantly feeds her baby crap. I have seen dc eat a magnum ice cream, a cornetto, a character jelly lollipop covered in sugar, a milky bar for breakfast and 2 packets of cheesy biscuits one after the other. She constantly posts photos of her baby eating these things on social media. A few days ago she told me that her baby doesn't like food without salt and won't eat it unless she adds salt to it first. She is aware of feeding advice and is an intelligent lady so it isn't due to a lack of awareness or education. I am no earth mother myself, I have fed my dc crap in the past but not at such a young age and I do feel awful for judging her but I am worried about her child's health and the eating habits her baby is likely to develop in childhood if she carries on!

YANBU to silently judge her

But what on earth are you hoping to get from this thread?

Is it so people on the internet can judge your 'friend' too?

Will that make you feel better somehow if everyone piles in?

spagbol11 · 04/02/2018 19:55

I’d judge, I remember my health visitor telling me a story about a mother who fed their 4 month old a mars bar and cup a soups . I was gobsmacked.

namechangew4nker · 04/02/2018 19:55

Worra, I wanted to see if I was overreacting or not and to gauge the responses as to wether I should speak up and say something to her or not.

This thread reminds me of the horrible case of the baby who died due to their mother giving them gravy quite a lot. The baby died from salt poisoning. I don't be talking to her and if she didn't stop reporting her to the health visitor. The baby can't stick up for himself.

namechangew4nker · 04/02/2018 19:56

Dreamy, he was holding the ice cream with both hands and had it all over his face.

I don't believe you.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 04/02/2018 19:57

I had a friend who used to give her one year old a double Milky Way on the way home from the shop, just before lunch, then complained she wouldn't eat her lunch.

namechangew4nker · 04/02/2018 19:58

Her baby is obviously not devouring everything whole as they can't bite or chew, but they are given the food to hold and suck on.

Can you talk to her maybe? Is this her first child? If not I’d speak to HV

Lol, well she certainly gets a prize for advancing with weaning. Bloody flying through the milestones isn't she Grin

Scaredofthegym · 04/02/2018 20:03

This could be very dangerous for the baby. I remember a story years back about a baby who died as its mum had been feeding it ready brek for breakfast every day amongst other salty things. Apparently it has high salt levels, or it did then, and the baby died from complications due to salt poisoning.

You need to talk to her, show her the story on the Internet to make her see sense.

namechangew4nker · 04/02/2018 20:04

Yes, this is her first child. I have no reason to lie or make it up, I have more entertaining things to do than make up fairytales on mumsnet, if you think I am telling fibs then please feel free to report me.

The baby can eat two whole packs of cheesy biscuits at 5 months old but I reckon that means we are getting fed more false Grin

Wow my son could hardly swallow vegetable mush at 6 months let alone eat a full magnum ice cream and biscuits.

namechangew4nker · 04/02/2018 20:09

I didn't say he ate the full magnum, but he was given it to hold and eat.

TheHappyRedDragon · 04/02/2018 20:09

You aren’t silently judging though. You are posting on a public forum and there is no way a five month old baby, regardless of how big it is, is physically capable of eating all of that.

ChristmasCakes · 04/02/2018 20:13

I don't believe you. I think the baby has been given a couple of small tastes of chocolate or biscuits or whatever and you've wanted to yap about it but grossly exaggerated it.

RatRolyPoly · 04/02/2018 20:13

I didn't say he ate the full magnum, but he was given it to hold and eat.

Ah, okay. I think I see what's going on here; your mate has a bit of a social-media-courting obsession with posing her baby with food in a "look what little Johnny ate today!" type way.

Don't worry, as with most thing on social media, it isn't real. The kid may well be holding the Magnum in that brief split-second, but for the ten minutes following it will have been being used to bash the cat or rubbed enthusiastically into their hair.

namechangew4nker · 04/02/2018 20:13

He isn't physically eating the whole lot apart from the biscuits. He is given them to suck and chew on. And apart from the biscuits they have not all been given at the same time Confused

OP posts:
FilledSoda · 04/02/2018 20:17

A 6 month old couldn't physically eat two packets of cheesy biscuits though, Their stomach is the size of their fist.

DreamyMcDreamy · 04/02/2018 20:18

Hang on - dc.Are you on about her childen in general or is this all what the baby eats?
If it's older children, yeah, they tend to gravitate towards crap however much you try to limit it.
Mine would inhale two packets of cheesy biscuits given half the chance. (10 and 14.)
