Am I being robbed? (Phone repair related)

Will try keep it brief...

Had my iPhone and screen repaired at a little corner shop about two months age. Cost £70. Noticed a few buttons started not working shortly after. Progressively got worse. Son dropped it so the plastic protector cracked.

I took it in last week as most buttons by then weren’t working. I left it there and on returning he said they’d opened it up and a catch had broken so It wasn’t covered by warranty so they’d fixed it and it’d be £40. I was [sceptical] but paid. How do I know it had cracked? The problems started before it was dropped....

Immediately after repair I noticed the home button wasn’t right. It’s not responding quickly or sometimes at all. I popped in yesterday to be told ‘oh the home buttons not related to what we did, that a separate fault. Nothing do with the repair we did. It’ll take me five mins and be a tenner’.

This Is an old phone and I’m going just get a new one soon if the repairs continue but aibu to think this guy is lying to me and taking me for everything he can?

I don’t know phones but most I’ve spoken to irl have said he’s definitely messed with the home button if he’s replaced the screen.....
