To ask what diet worked for you

As two years later I am still hugely overweight.

Please don't be offended if i don't rhink it is for me. I am just trying to work out what might help me as I am despairing!

What are your trigger points? Have you had success on diets before?

Every single diet has had someone who has success on it.

For me it's low carb. Removing sugar from my diet removes cravings and protein fills me up and removes hunger.

But you need to explain your issues and what you have tried further as we are all different.

ScreamingValenta · 04/02/2018 11:10

Low carb high fat is both effective and fairly easy to stick to. Come over to Low Carb Bootcamp if you're interested.

Purely on effectiveness, strict calorie counting has also worked in the past (sticking to 1000 cals a day) but it's very restrictive and leaves me hungry.

What has never worked is a low fat diet - I did one counting fat grams, and also briefly tried Slimming World - useless for me personally, although I know they work for some people.

NewYearNiki · 04/02/2018 11:11

Calories in and calories out.

It is a maths problem, burn more than you take in.

Reducing calories and increasing activity worked.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 04/02/2018 11:13

A crash diet to start with.
I need fast results to keep me motivated.

Can’t be arsed with the ounce a week nonsense.

otherdoor · 04/02/2018 11:13

Strict calorie counting is the only thing that's ever worked for me.

SinglePringle · 04/02/2018 11:15

Combining (old Points based) WW with low carb / high protein worked for me: counting points but eating high protein / low carb.

Lost 4st about 10 years ago and kept it off.

And exercise. Lots of exercise.

springtimemoon · 04/02/2018 11:15

I think I am the same char

I have lost weight in the past but it has mostly been when seriously restricting calories and I have so much to lose now that might be hard to sustain.

I put on a load of weight pre kids and got it off by controlling portion sizes and thinking about nutrition. So always going for the more nutritious of the options available. I put the weight in due to meds though, so didn't have the same psychological stuff going on as most overweight people - some people see excess weight as a moral failing. 2 kids later and I was overweight again (I was fine after the births, it was the second mat leave that got me, then a series of stressful events). I lost the first stone of it last year (Aug/ Sept/ Oct) put a fee pounds on over Xmas. Now I've quit sugar and bread in January because I don't have the willpower to do portion control. I've lost 10lb since start of year and have half a stone to go.
To be honest all the diets work if you do them right. Less sugar, more veg. Some foods with satiety (nuts, meat, dairy, pulses). Good luck!

SinglePringle · 04/02/2018 11:17

(And accepting - after initial kick start of half a stone in a week - that a loss of a pound a week was still a loss. It took 18 months to lose the total. And I still eat low carb / high protein and exercise).

NearlySchoolTimeAgain · 04/02/2018 11:18

SW works for me, but I took to the extreme and ended up LCHF which will be my fallback for life I think.

I feel healthier without sugar.

thepatchworkcat · 04/02/2018 11:19

I don’t normally do diets but did the 5:2 for a few months and it really worked. Tried it again a couple of years later and couldn’t stick with it though. I really had the willpower and motivation the first time round, the second time round I couldn’t be bothered as much!

OwlinaTree · 04/02/2018 11:19

I've lost just over 3st with SW. Works for me as you can always find something to eat. I used to do old style ww but as fruit had points I wouldn't always make healthy choices. SW things like fruit are free so I snack and eat really healthily.

WeirdnessOfDoom · 04/02/2018 11:19

Portion control and cut the crap- no sweets, crisps alcohol and such

RitasEducation · 04/02/2018 11:19

If you have the time to prepare you foods, I'd say I have seen the best results from people with slimming world.

I have made lots of the meals for DP, he loved them and he is an epic eater, my sister and her friend lost loads between them, the meeting encouraged most, but some just stuck to the cooking at home.

Turkey burgers and curried oven chips with lots of salad yum.

Bixg · 04/02/2018 11:21

Low carb for me, as It doesnt leave you feeling hungry and I get quick results, often lose up to 8lb in the first 2 weeks when I do it after a break from dieting. My energy and mood is also much better when I cut out refined sugars, which helps keep me going.

ScreamingValenta · 04/02/2018 11:21

springtime Most people who have never low-carbed before experience a very motivating big loss in the first week. I lost 8lb in a week when I began. It then settles down to 'sensible' levels.

Jaygee61 · 04/02/2018 11:22

Portion control, low fat, exercise seems to be working for me. I have lost 5lb since the beginning of the year.

jimijack · 04/02/2018 11:22

I've done them all. Every single one.
Lost and gained stones upon stones.

Now I'm older, it's fucking painful and 100% harder.

I now do my fitness pal. It's free. It tracks, it gives me a small amount of control.
Doesn't stop me eating, but I use it to rob Peter to pay Paul each day in terms of fat & calories.
I weigh once a week. That's it.

I'm not losing huge amounts but at the same time, I'm not getting fatter and fatter day by day which I was doing.

Jaygee61 · 04/02/2018 11:23

Oh yes and reducing alcohol and cutting out crap.

JustDanceAddict · 04/02/2018 11:24

DOing mfp - my fitness pal - worked for me last year. I stuck to 1200 cals most days and upped the exercise. I only had to lose a few lbs though - it came off slowly - it’s a lifestyle choice though and as soon as the event happened that I wanted to lose for) I stopped and it went back on.

springtimemoon · 04/02/2018 11:25

I don't drink at all. It is all about the food for me.

I feel like weeping. I can't fit into my clothes and it is horrible.

OP posts:
Eliza9917 · 04/02/2018 11:25

Exante meal replacement and low carb, high fat.

WutheringFrights · 04/02/2018 11:26

Cambridge diet. I lost 2.5 stone in 12 weeks, easiest diet ive ever tried....the amount it costs keeps you motivated!!!!

springtimemoon · 04/02/2018 11:27

Is there a cambridge diet thread?

OP posts:
ScreamingValenta · 04/02/2018 11:29

springtimemoon Flowers We've all been there, it's horrible. Hard though it is, you need to choose a diet/WOE and take that first step - find a thread on here for your chosen eating plan, to join for support.
