As two years later I am still hugely overweight.

Please don't be offended if i don't rhink it is for me. I am just trying to work out what might help me as I am despairing!

Losing weight is never easy is it, for anyone.

Throwing yourself into a fad diet might not work for you which is why I suggested making just two small changes.

You said you can't run without injury, you can walk though right? Most people could commit to 3x30 minute walks a week.

Most people could commit to cutting out treats.

It's a starting point.

Rafflesway · 04/02/2018 11:58

Finally getting my underactive thyroid diagnosed and being put on Thyroxine plus starting 5:2 shortly afterwards.

Had been size 10/12 all my life until I hit peri menopause. Went up to size 16 which wouldn't move whatever I did. Was great to discover the underactive thyroid was primarily to blame and have now been back to size 12 for 5 years. I follow a relaxed 5:2 way of eating all the time now.

AnnaMagnani · 04/02/2018 11:59

None as I went on holiday, ate loads, then got ill and undid all my good habits.

But it would have been the Blood Sugar Diet.

springtimemoon · 04/02/2018 11:59

Ok well the thread was helpful to start with.

OP posts:
NotMeNoNo · 04/02/2018 12:00

What did you try before and what do you think went wrong?

Woollypinksocks · 04/02/2018 12:01

Look all diets work if you stick to the plan. Most people can lose weight.

The problem is sticking with it in the long, long term.

LemonShark · 04/02/2018 12:01

Hmm you don't like some of the advice you're being given?

ShortandAnnoying · 04/02/2018 12:01

A severe weight problem is normally always linked to emotional issues and I think you need to look into that side of it. A reasonably intelligent person knows what they are doing wrong even if they might not be sure exactly what a perfect diet looks like. Of course there's a lot of conflicting advice but we all know that we shouldn't be eating a lot of cakes and takeaways. So if you can't stop binging on junk then there's a psychological side to your problems. Look at what's going wrong there and then start looking at what to eat.

Margomyhero · 04/02/2018 12:02

Low carb. Mid fat. High protein for me. 3 good sized meals a day which I struggled with at first as I'm more of a grazer/snacker but now I can chow it down. I've lost over a stone and two dress sizes. Feel much healthier and stronger too.

Plus working out a lot.

PinkHeart5914 · 04/02/2018 12:03

Of course it’s that simple! You start with little changes like reducing sugar in tea/coffee, cutting back on sweets/crisp, adding extra veg to every dinner to help fill you up and making a real effort to exercise even if it’s a little walk a few days a week.

Any diet plan will work provided you stick to it but you do need to find some willpower. There is no easy or miracle diet, all require some hard work.

I am currently losing pregnancy weight after the birth of my 3rd dc nearly 7 weeks ago. I downloaded my fitness pal and log everything I eat, I eat whatever I fancy and as long as I stick to my daily calorie allowance along with my running and use of the exercise bike the weight falls off!

springtimemoon · 04/02/2018 12:03

Yeah I know short but it is not easy getting help for that either.

OP posts:
NurseButtercup · 04/02/2018 12:04

I think I am too big to run without risking injury.

Walk instead - if you drive consider which journeys you could catch the bus/train instead.

And

After your evening meal go straight out for a walk start off gradually, walk for 10minutes and then turn around and go home. You've done 20minutes.

Slowly increase this by 5minutes each week until you get to 30minutes in both directions. Then start to increase your pace and walk quicker. You'll feel better and you'll see the weight drop off.

Don't change what you're eating at the moment, instead reduce the quantity you're eating and increase your water intake to 2litres per day. Water - not fruit juice, squash, sugar free fizzy drinks plain water.

Good luck

PinkHeart5914 · 04/02/2018 12:05

So the thread isn’t now helpful because someone suggested cutting out cakes, crisps and walking a few times a week? Confused

Honestly what did you think people would say? Eat what you like don’t exercise and your lose weight?

springtimemoon · 04/02/2018 12:06

Ok pink that was so helpful. Thank you.

OP posts:
Groovee · 04/02/2018 12:06

Slimming world. I needed a lifestyle change. I will aim to follow the principles to keep the weight off. My downfall is crisps. I used to eat so many, where as now I have maybe 3 packs a week.

I've lost 4st in 2017. Things have slowed and the past fortnight I have been poorly and it's been a struggle to stop myself turning to the junk but I know if I do it will be the spiral downwards.

I'd tried things before but nothing made me really want to do it. I think your mindset needs to be in the right place.

WutheringFrights · 04/02/2018 12:06

Springtime, take a look at each of the diets that people have recommended, something will click with you and fit into your life. Take that first step today.

Grenoble124 · 04/02/2018 12:07

Weightwatchers. Attending class and maintaining. Lost over 3 stone. Under goal now.

Autumnchill · 04/02/2018 12:07

I use the Nutra Check Calorie Counter app, it's really helped me keep on the straight and narrow and you can mark 'easy days' on the Beta one I'm currently testing which means Fri/Sat you get more calories but less on the other 5 days (you select the days).

You can also put your own recipes in which for me is good as I love to cook and it has thousands of bar codes in the system so really easy to scan products. It also helps me control my portions because that's my biggest issue. Since beginning of the year I've lost 7lbs, been out most weekends and away for a long weekend.

Good luck whatever you choose to do

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 04/02/2018 12:09

Going for a walk within an hour of eating is very helpful for weight management and for your blood sugar.

MatildaTheCat · 04/02/2018 12:09

Have you considered Overeaters Annonymous? Seriously, you are dismissing the one irrefutable fact that you cannot lose weight and sustain that loss unless you fundamentally change your mindset and your habits.

Diets fail because too many people consider that once they’ve lost the weight then the diet is over and regain. Weight control is a lifelong habit. It means choosing the apple over the doughnut, water rather than coke and sometimes choosing to not eat anything. It is very possible to change your tastes over time and come to prefer the apple and the water but it won’t happen overnight and you have to believe it.

And finally, it’s slow. I lost 2.5 stones over nine months. Sure, with more to lose it would have been quicker but searching frantically for a fast and lasting solution is futile. If you really cannot do this, despite engaging with professionals and seriously trying to alter your mindset, then maybe consider bariatric surgery. ( you haven’t actually indicated if you are in this category)

verite · 04/02/2018 12:10

No alcohol, low sugar to kick start metabolism. Then 5:2. Only thing that works for me and I have maintained weight loss for about 5 years. I can’t do low carb - just doesn’t work for me. I love my carbs too much!

ScreamingValenta · 04/02/2018 12:14

Why not browse the Low Carb thread I linked earlier, OP, and see if it strikes you as a WOE you could get used to.

You can have some lovely high fat foods that would normally be out on a diet - pork with crackling, for instance; double cream, steak fried in butter, green veg with a knob of butter melting on it ... tempting at all?

bridgetreilly · 04/02/2018 12:16

Get the Blood Sugar Diet book. Commit to it for 8 weeks. That's it. Then decide if it's working for you.

HiggeldyPigsinblankets · 04/02/2018 12:16

I have tried so many diets over the years, slimming world and weight watchers had limited results for me because they dont address portion size and I got bored. What had good results and quickly was the blood sugar diet and intermittent fasting. I find restricting myself every day becomes depressing so I cheat and eat food I shouldn't, whereas with the 5:2 I could say ok I can have that tomorrow if I want it, it wasn't so bad. The blood sugar diet was good, not particularly easy to start with but the recipe books have some great easy family friendly recipes and you don't feel deprived, the quick results keep you motivates

springtimemoon · 04/02/2018 12:32

Im not a Christian Matilda, but thank you.
