To think that there must be a healthier version of Nutella?

Nutella on toast (wholemeal bread) is all my son will eat for breakfast! (don't waste your time suggesting alternatives!).
Is there a similar tasting chocolate spread which is healthier that I could try?
Preferably one that can be bought in the major supermarkets.
Thanks

Jim jams or Tesco no added sugar

Camomila · 02/02/2018 08:42

I have tried all sorts of nutella alternatives to find one without palm oil...you'd best go to a health shop and see what options they have (it'd still be sugary though)

Oooh you could buy hazlenut butter and mix it with nutella so he'd be getting more nut and less chocolate?

Rebeccaslicker · 02/02/2018 08:43

I'm not going to say it's healthy, but it seems to be quite a lot lower in fat and sugar than Nutella - chocolate Philadelphia?

Although it may be that the hazelnuts in the Nutella mean it's the good sort of fat as well as the chocolate sort of fat; someone more clued up than I am may know!

ceeveebee · 02/02/2018 08:44

I mix Nutella with another nut butter eg almond and my DS never notices the difference!

honeybeetheoneandonly · 02/02/2018 12:36

Do you have a food processor? You can make it yourself.

LaurieMarlow · 02/02/2018 12:47

This is available in Ireland

thehappypear.ie/nuts-about-choc-2/

There's a recipe on their page that you can make at home.

honeybeetheoneandonly · 02/02/2018 12:49

Sorry, had to go and check my recipe book:

2 cups (375g) hazelnuts
1/2 cup (150ml) maple syrup
3 tablespoons cacao powder
Water

Roast the hazelnuts and let them cool.
(Stick them in a hot oven (200C or 180C fan), for 10min)
Put them in a food processor for about 10min! They become a paste once they release their own oils.
Add the maple syrup and cacao and blend for another 5min.
Gradually add water until it's the consistency you want (150ml in the recipe but I think I used less).

My food processor doesn't make it perfectly smooth but it tastes great.

halfwitpicker · 02/02/2018 12:51

It's not actually that bad isn't Nutella. At least there's protein!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 02/02/2018 13:02

I make peanut butter in my food processor (just blitz cheap roasted peanuts). You could experiment with hazelnuts and cocoa or cheap dark chocolate.

givemushypeasachance · 02/02/2018 13:07

The people who make "Choc Shot" also make a thicker chocolate spread type version called "Choc Pot". I haven't tried it but the Choc Shot liquid chocolate stuff is really nice. Info here on their website.

Ingredients are "natural fruit extracts; apples, grapes & carob, water, cocoa, natural flavouring, rapeseed oil, sunflower lecithin" and it's 14 calories per teaspoon, which compares to 34 calories in a teaspoon of Nutella.

My kids like it but then they have rarely had Nutella. Only on preschool pancakes.

Mogginthemog · 02/02/2018 14:16

Barry I got the meridian one and ended up throwing it away. Even
When mixed to get rid of layer of oil it tasted vile to me. Great that your DC will eat it

JeNeSuisPasVotreMiel · 02/02/2018 14:18

are least there's protein any minimal benefits of this would be heavily outweighed by the amount of sugar in nutella.
Protein isn't an essential part of our diet, and can be obtained from vegetables and pulses anyway.

Redhead17 · 02/02/2018 14:19

I’m allergic to hazelnuts I always feel i am missing out

GetShitDone · 02/02/2018 14:22

A friend of mine swears by this one www.grenade.com/uk/carb-killa-spread

GetShitDone · 02/02/2018 14:23

Since when has protein not been essential to our diet?

crackerjacket · 02/02/2018 14:25

Say what? Protein isn't essential?

AuntFidgetWonkhamStrongNajork · 02/02/2018 14:25

Make it yourself:
200g good-quality dark chocolate, roughly chopped
65g toasted hazelnuts, finely chopped (although you can leave these out entirely)
395g can sweetened condensed milk
200g unsalted butter or margarine

Place chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of gently simmering water and stir occasionally until melted. Remove from heat and cool slightly, then stir in nuts, milk and butter until well combined. Spoon into a jar and refrigerate until ready to use.

FlyingElbows · 02/02/2018 14:28

Lentil Nutella. Only on mumsnet!

ForgivenessIsDivine · 02/02/2018 14:28

Date paste, Hazlenut Butter, Cacao powder and water.... Works in our house...

SandyY2K · 02/02/2018 14:28

I hate that my DD loves nutella. She's 17...so old enough to buy it herself. She hides it ok n her room, but I found it and threw it out. She'd never ask whete it is.

Chaosofcalm · 02/02/2018 14:30

Marks and Spencer’s do a healthier version. Meridian do a hazelnut butter with cocoa powder.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 02/02/2018 14:31

Nutella is basically icing. I sometimes make it, though I don't have a recipe and just fiddle with the ingredients until it tastes nice. My DC like it best when I melt dark chocolate into the mixture.

weebarra · 02/02/2018 14:32

My DCs now eat JimJams after an eventful trip to an exhibition about monkeys where we all learnt a lot about palm oil. They say they prefer it.

Piffle11 · 02/02/2018 14:36

My DS loves Nutella and this recipe from The Kitchn (US site so US measurements - I just google the UK equivalent) is a good one:
1 cup toasted hazelnuts, peeled
1/4 cup dark cocoa powder (I use cacao)
1/2 cup icing sugar
3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons canola oil (I don't use this: I blitz the nuts for longer and they go runny enough that you don't need oil)

I know that it's still not exactly healthy, but I use organic ingredients and obviously there's no palm oil or processed gunk in it. DS is a PITA when it comes to food so I was pleasantly surprised when he happily took to this instead of his beloved Nutella.
