To think 6 year olds should not be wearing this

Merchandise from a major dance show at the excel centre in London next month. They sell these, and tshirts from age 6 up.

I’m going to have to explain to a 10 year old why she can’t have a jumper...

Sorry to keep you up - had other stuff to do!
If my child wanted to wear that jumper I'd let them. They would take the literal meaning and the fact that some adults may be outraged about it reminding them of a meme from the 80's would have no effect on my child whatsoever.
I do find it amusing how outraged you are about the apparent sexual undertones of this jumper you would never buy yet are happy to take your child to listen to sexualised material in a pantomime because it went over your head as well as theirs

IMightMentionGriddlebone · 01/02/2018 23:12

I've been thinking about it, and sometimes they're the same and sometimes they... aren't.

If it's a joke that relies on a word meaning two things that both apply at the same time, e.g. "You've got a great pair of coconuts" to a woman in the fresh foods aisle, it's definitely a double entendre.

Sexual innuendo on its own is saying normal sentences in a suggestive way, I think?

scaevola · 01/02/2018 23:15

Context is all : like all the complaints to the radio show about 'Great tits like coconuts..' from people who switched of before '.. but coal tits prefer to stick to worms'

StoneColdDiva · 01/02/2018 23:16

Those saying it is innocent, when you see the pic of Madonna in the tee shirt reading "Italians do it better", what do you think that "it" refers to?

SexTrainGlue · 01/02/2018 23:18

I wouidn't be outraged.

But I would think that, if worn by a prepubescent child, that the parents had appalling taste.

It's too well known a joke pattern referring to sex positions.

I get innuendo. I’m not daft. No reason to assume that I am. I just have different views to you. That’s ok.

As both myself and others have said before there is a difference between panto innuendo and a child wearing a jumper which has two meanings, one of which is that they have sex with attitude.

As I said before, I honestly can’t believe that knowing what other people may read into the slogan that you would let your 6 year old wear it. But then tha would get in the way of being professionally unoffended. And what’s more important than that?

Panto innuendo has two meanings as well. Half the time sexual. Why would you be OK with one but not the other?

starray · 01/02/2018 23:21

I think it's a generational thing! It would never have crossed my mind that it had anything to do with sex ha ha! I can now no longer look at a sentence with the words "do it with" innocently ever again!

Differences between innuendo and double entendres

OP posts:
SockUnicorn · 01/02/2018 23:23

@welliments i dont see a problem with this

BlueMirror · 01/02/2018 23:23

I'd assume 'it' meant fucking in the Madonna example. My child would perhaps think it meant pizza though.

What does anyone actually think would come of a child wearing this jumper that justifies the pearl clutching. I've never heard or known of anyone (apart from the op on this thread) refuse to let their children wear Nike because some of the t-shirts have 'Just do it' on them. Regardless of Nikes marketing intention 'Just do it' would likely be assumed by a child to refer to some kind of sport.

starray · 01/02/2018 23:23

""Those saying it is innocent, when you see the pic of Madonna in the tee shirt reading "Italians do it better", what do you think that "it" refers to?""

But that can only refer to one thing and one thing only. This slogan could just be about dance.

DreamyMcDreamy · 01/02/2018 23:23

OK, I'll rephrase it then if you're going to try and dodge again.
Panto is full of both double entendres and innuendo. Half the time sexual. Why would you be OK with one but not the other?

BlueMirror · 01/02/2018 23:24

So exposing a child to sexualised material at the theatre is ok with you op that's what you're saying?

DreamyMcDreamy · 01/02/2018 23:25

I've never heard or known of anyone (apart from the op on this thread) refuse to let their children wear Nike because some of the t-shirts have 'Just do it' on them.

Same, that's got to be a piss take as surely nobody is that ridiculous.

welliments · 01/02/2018 23:25

BECAUSE ONE IS ABOUT CHILDREN AND SEX

Sorry to shout but it’s late and I honestly don’t know what else to say to make you understaaaaaaannnnd.

Am totally fine with you having a different view to me, I just don’t know how you’re failing to see the difference!

That’s it.

I’m done explaining.

I can’t believe people are outraged about OPs thoughts on this jumper but are quite willing to let their kids wear a jumper about sex positions, mind boggling.
Panto lines are said by grown ups, for grown ups. They are not said by children, for children. You are either being deliberately obtuse or you are really really thick.

BlueMirror · 01/02/2018 23:26

Exposing children to sexual themes is about children and sex as well.

BlueMirror · 01/02/2018 23:27

The innuendo on this jumper isn't for children. 6 yos aren't aware of memes from the 80's!!!!!

Only if your mind is in the gutter.

OP posts:
DirtyBlonde · 01/02/2018 23:28

Difference?

In the panto, the child is the audience to the display

Wearing the slogan, the child is the display

Small DC wearing sexually knowing slogans isn't the stuff of outrage, but it's distinctly tacky

Nottheduchessofcambridge · 01/02/2018 23:28

welliments is give up if I were you, can’t educate pork.

Ellle · 01/02/2018 23:29

I think the difference with the panto example is that none of he jokes are directed to the children or imply the children have sex in a particular way. Whereas a girl wearing that top, who happens to be a dancer or likes dancing, is in the centre of the joke, with the implication that she has sex in a particular way.

In the phrase "Italians do it better" I would have thought the food? I love Italian food, and I loved visiting Italy, so I could think about lots of things Italians could be proud of, and my mind wouldn't immediately jump to assuming it means sex (unless it is Madonna wearing it).

DreamyMcDreamy · 01/02/2018 23:30

BECAUSE ONE IS ABOUT CHILDREN AND SEX

You are the one seeing sex words on a child's jumper!
OK, you don't want children to wear "dancers do it with attitude" jumpers because it means sex and not dancing apparently. Even though you say yourself there are two meanings.
Why are you OK with children hearing rude double entendres at pantomimes though? There's two meanings. If it's all about the adult meaning, then surely you should keep your little ones away lest they hear something naughty.

BlueMirror · 01/02/2018 23:30

Your argument is completely hypocritical welliments and you know it. Which is why you tried to pretend there was no double entendre in pantomimes that are aimed specifically at children.
